That Brazil 1982 World Cup team was exceptional. The greatest footy team ever. They lost because even the defenders were attacking. Socrates,Zico,Facao, etc
Looking back on it, Brazil in 1982 were not really a team - only a brilliant midfield - probably the best in World Cup history. To emphasise this point, in the match against Italy, Serginho and Eder were non-existent and their defence was cut apart nearly every time the Italians counter attacked.
An earlier, unforgettable game at the 1982 World Cup, was Brazil v Russia. Glorious, glorious football, with compelling tempo and rhythm to boot. A bona fide classic and definitely one for the connoisseur.

This is a very common opinion. 1990 could also be good, but it happened to be really dull, the World Penalty Shootout Cup. Awarding 1994 tournament to a non-football nation was a big mistake, as was expansion to 32 teams in 1998. It's funny how they explained that the expansion is inevitable due to breakup of Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union, yet they awarded these new spots to Africa, Central America and Asia - again, more non-footbal nations from non-football continents. I hope I'll die before they make it for 48 teams.
@@igorszamaszow1711954, 1958 & 1970 were the real deal. 1962 and 1966 were pretty boring and even violent. 1974 was very good but it went downhill in 1978 (dreadful refereeing and most teams obsessed with tactics) and 1982 (there was so much square passing in Spain). 1986 was pretty good again but from 1990 onwards I fell asleep. this was a truly great WC. 70, 82 and 86 were the finest ever imo and there hasn't been a memorable one since 98. FIFA and greed have ruined what was a special thing every four years.
Platini has always said he wants the world cup increased to 40 teams...8 more than the 32 currently in force! Now thats ridiculous since it would mean less quality teams qualifying and some games would be almost amaeteurish!
You're not getting my point...Iceland qualified in top spot in their qualifying group. With 40 teams third place teams from Europe would get through via play-offs as would 5th place central american teams. Even in this years Euro 16 most games have had very few goals scored in them. Under a smaller format even the first round would have great games like England v Germany and Holland v Italy which would make the whole tournament attractive from start to finish!
It's not that games would be amateurish, they'd just be of no interest. Dead rubbers where 4th plays 6th in a 6 team group with neither team any chance of progressing. FIFA would have got some TV and advertising money and that's it. For the fans those games would be of zero interest. And there'd be quite a few of them.
@Darwinion - That would have been the case, especially for the 2nd group stage, with only 2 out of 6 teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals. There would have been a lot of match-fixing potential too.
@@AntonesPap Standards of football will be lower. African and Asian teams have improved greatly but they don't yet deserve to have more representatives in the WC since most get eliminated in the first round anyway. Only in 2014 did two African nations go beyond the first round in the same tournament. They should go back to the old 24 team WC's in which only two teams from Asia and Africa qualified immediately and maybe have other Asian and African nations play off against other nations from Europe and South America before qualifying. This new 48 business is just a money spinner to line FIFA more money while ignoring the good of the game.
