One thing I've always wondered is how AVs can legally advertise a 50% off sale that never goes away. At least in the States, there have been a few companies (like JC Penney's iirc) that have lost lawsuits because they would advertise 'sale prices' on their products, when in fact the 'sale price' was just the regular, everyday price that would never change. They lost the lawsuit because it's clearly false advertising (misleads the customer to think they're getting a time-sensitive deal).

Rings 2 and 1 are only meant for device drivers and not for programs. Ring 0 gives you access to basically everything and ring 3 privileges give you almost no access. In my opinion running Malwarebytes alongside Defender is not bad idea, Windows 7 and older didn't have that good defender but Windows 10 does a pretty good job at it. I believe that "big" AV's are just useless and takes a lot of resources and does pretty much the same thing as Win Defender but worse, so using these kind is just pointless, not to mention possible ads and spams as already mentioned.

I would argue that no, it is still more important to just not execute programs that you don't trust. Browsers still are getting security updates, etc. just your OS is not. Although yes it would be smarter to switch to Linux Mint over staying on Win7 I think

@@cericat Honestly I don't know how bad exploits on Win7 are, like I said I wouldn't dare use such an operating system (except in a VM).
My point is that if you have good opsec, no one is going to get control over your computer without discovering a zero-day in your browser too. Or your shitty proprietary pdf reader or something too, since apparently adobe reader can execute shell code
Would it be nice if you were safer than just your browser? Sure, but it isn't the end of the world

    • @cericat
      @cericat 3 года назад +1

@@magnusanderson6681 we just had an SMB vulnerability patched (again) in W10 in December. Sadly no guarantee the same vulnerability isn't in the no longer maintained editions of Windows. And these tend to be issues that are sniffed for over the web. Heck getting the Blaster fix onto XP before you connected to the internet was key, my experience was you had about 5 minutes before it hit you, no browsing required, and it wasn't installing that fix as part of the latest SP on a fresh install despite being released before it was assembled.
A good hardware firewall can mitigate some of the threats I mentioned, but counting on any one measure to safeguard a connected system is risky, especially for an OS we're always seeing people looking for new exploits for, and there's way more of those older systems out there than we like to see with no guarantee they ever updated so are even more vulnerable than the best case scenario.

To be fair, the ransomware protection in Windows Defender has to be properly set up by the user. It consists mainly of "controlled folder access" which denies unknown programs access to the folders set up in there and it's deactivated by default. Most people don't know about it or don't bother activating it. Which I can understand as it can cause issues with programs as some will refuse to work because they can't access certain folders, so you first have to go through a process of allowing them access manually. (I also encountered some kind of a bug with it before, where a program wanted access, I gave it access to those folders and it still couldn't open my files. It's been a while so it's probably been fixed at some point.)

IMO, the only antivirus software necessary (for Windows) is its integrated defender. On Android, Linux and Mac OS, you dont need one at all. Even defender gets more than useless and annoying sometimes, especially when it removes completely legitimate software that may become dangerous when misused. Many things can, a simple notification should be enough as everything else feels like implying that the user is an idiot.

If you're concerned about that then you might be better off setting up a backup server. You could have a cron job run every week/few days/whatever you want that uploads all of your files to this server. The server maintains the most recent two backups (in case something happens to your files right before the job runs) and if anything happens you can just restore your files from the server. Sure they'll be a week old but it beats losing them completely. I would recommend investing in some server hardware and a good amount of storage (about double what you have on your PC, say you have 1 TB, then you'll want to get 2 TB). I would also recommend running a linux distro (Ubuntu Server is very good) on the server. Linux is known for being very stable; you can leave a Linux PC running for years unlike Windows which will restart or crash even just a few days or weeks in. For extra security I would also recommend investing in some cloud storage and setting up your server to upload the oldest backup to the cloud storage every so often (maybe once a month or something). This protects your data in the event of a fire or other physical disaster

Accidentaly opening a link because of a simple misclick won't lead to a ransomeware attack. Downloading and executing a malicious virus (Trojan for example) is what will lead to encrypted files and a sum to be paid. Which, again, is what Antiviruses are there for: to prevent you from executing malicious downloads by warning you beforehand what's in them.
Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

If you're stupid enough to 'accidently open a wrong URL' then you deserve everything that happens. On top of that the only way this scenario happens is if you're in an area of the internet you should not be if you're a newbie/idiot. Lastly, it's 2020. If you don't have some of/all of your files backed up then the fault is yours and yours alone. External hard drives are very inexpensive and all it takes is for you to move your files before you go to bed at night and you will not run into any problems. Basically it comes down to common sense. Don't be an idiot and 99.9 times out of 100 you'll be fine. Don't be a hero and try to click links or download things from shady websites.

"Antivirus software is useless! Just use common sense!"
    then....
"If you're unsure about some software, upload it to virustotal"
Virustotal just runs antivirus on a file, but it's only the static engine for all of the listed AVs. Static engines are better than nothing but also fairly easy to bypass. Behavioral engines are going to be much better at detecting malicious code. Antivirus software is not a waste of money.

@@Acooky. I mean it makes sense, common sense and good habits, however I don't expect any of it from my mom or most of my friends that have no clue about cyber security. Avast has blocked shady stuff from newspaper sites, I used to teach my mom that "green padlock" next to a website meant it was safe, but now over 80% of scam sites have it.

The problem with windows defender is that it is a cloud antivirus, it completely depends on the internet to do its job. If you get disconnected from the internet its capability to protect your computer is reduced massively, and stops blocking most malware. Antivirus like Kaspersky or bit defender are not cloud antiviruses at least in their standard editions so they have full protection offline and online.

Well if you are offline you cant download any software. So you dont need no protection offline unless you do executables.
