Warning: this is a very long post so if that bothers anyone you should probably just keep scrolling. 😊 This video is the first one of yours I came across and now I'm hooked! Finally, someone who uses the kind of colors I use and doesn't hold back either with color or feeling! Thank you! Your work is amazing! Although my style is similar to yours I don't have your confidence at all! I taught mixed media art to kids for over 25 years I have only recently begun abstract painting. Watching many RUclips videos left me feeling mostly uninterested. I am so grateful that you share your experience so freely. Finally, an artist with whom I resonate. You have inspired me to really pursue my art path. Something that has always held me back is when paint something I think it isn't art. But when I see another artists' painting in a similar style or design I never question if it's art. Of course, it is! Do you have any suggestions for how I can overcome this? I see other artists seem to automatically accept/know that their work is art. I always feel like people will think some variation of "my (insert very young age) could do that"! Or, 'what is that supposed to be?" Or the most cringe-inducing, " I guess she can't paint realistically so she does this so she can pretend to be an artist". Did you always know what you do is art? Why do I need to convince myself/others? I completely understand if you don't want to get into this. It's just that I have NEVER told anyone about this and I truly connect with your art. So, I thought I would take a chance. If you made it this far I appreciate it very much! All the best to you!
Yes Shauna - I read it all! Remember that art is a label - nothing more. It exists, like all labels, to allow us as a species to make sense of things ad move on. But unlike many other things in life, it is a subjective thing. Now, any academic who reads this will be enraged as there are predefined determined aesthetics and properties that 'art' should confine to (according to academic study) but I think all that is crap! Paint what you like, who the hell cares anyway? Go research Marcel Duchamp and his urinal - then tell me you feel better calling your work art!! I get negative feedback just as all creative people do - I just laugh because I am confident in what i do. I just make stuff I like to look at, that's all. And that's all your audience and clients will ever care about too so who cares about anybody else's opinion! Thanks for choosing a wide open, public forum to share something like this - i appreciate that took some doing but you did it and your work and confidence will grow as a result. So it's win win for you today Shauna! Thanks for the message!! Ed
@@SwarezArt Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me. I figured I cannot be the only one who feels this way. I know I'm not the only one helped by your response. I feel the same as you regarding the "fine art folks" who like to tell the rest of us what defines art. I especially love their "rule" that real artists only paint with oils. Ugh! Anyway, I don't know why I do this to myself when I am so good at encouraging others. My husband is very supportive but I always tell myself he's biased. It's interesting that except for my art self-critic issue I am confident and outspoken. I read your response 3x and have decided to take your very good advice. I love the way you said that you just make stuff you like to look at. It's simple yet brilliant! I way overthink this regarding my own art. I may have to "act as if" for a while but even that is better than treading the same water forever. I am truly grateful and I take your words to heart. When I watch your videos I am astounded that every piece you create is outstanding. As you walk through your studio past the kaleidoscope of canvas my spirit is truly lifted! You're the best! Well, I'm off to check out the urinal you suggested. That sounded a bit weird, haha, but I am curious. All the best to you!
"Feel the fear and do it anyway" is a philosophy I've grown to love. "What's the worst that can happen?" is another aspect. We're so good at self deprecation, (I say we as I'm prone to self doubt and inner criticism too). It's time to put away the negativity now ... let's create and just be happy with what we do and are.. 😀😀😀😀
You are a blessing. Your studio is a breath of fresh air. Like seeing the most beautiful sunset you have ever seen. After watching your last video I proceeded to crank out 5 paintings. Thank you for your inspiration. Bless your heart.
I've just discovered your channel - your abstract artwork is beautiful, I have never been able to do this type of painting, but after watching this tutorial I will have a go - it is so well demonstrated I don't think I can go wrong - at least I hope I turn out a reasonable panel. Many thanks Thelma Marsh.
i love your use of colour! i love working with card too....its such fun. i thought i was weird so its nice to know someone else paints mad too! 😂 thanks so much for sharing what you love ...your videos always inspire me... i need to paint now!!
Yes. It's really fun and inspiring to watch you do it, Swarez! 😍You made it easy and cheap to start with abstract painting. 🌹 All one needs is imagination. 🤫🤗🥳
Thanks for your video tutorial, you really explain very well. I'm starting in abstract painting and it's trial, hit and error, but that makes it more interesting, I'll follow you with your videos.
Gotta give huge thumbs up for your videos. Very patient and provides all we need to know about acrylic painting. Can’t wait to hit the board with what I’ve learnt here. Thanks a lot!
Love your art! Obviously MANY of us do and clearly you are very successful at it. Some people seem mighty jealous of your talent and success. Keep the videos coming. Love them and you positive energy. 💜
Great tutorial dude. I’m a landscape artist and have tried my hand at abstract but ballsed it up. You made it look easy. You’re also a really good presenter. Loved the piece you did about art galleries taking the piss. ☺️🙏
I just love how you make art look so beautiful and easy your art is the sunshine in my window you can tell you put your heart and soul in to it thank you fine young sir peace and love to all
Wow, thank you for sharing this! So simple and yet fun and elegant! I can't wait to try this. Love so many of the pieces in the background also and look forward to watching your other videos!
The last time I painted was 36 yrs ago - this video has got me fired up and am starting on a canvas now - got all the materials after watching the previous one. Your simple, low tech , no fuss approach makes it seem so “easy”. Thanks!!!
Thank you so much Ed for this video tutorial! I watched a lot of videos about abstract painting, but I could not dare myself to start like this, on a large canvas. Although I still poorly understand English, even so, your technique gave me inspiration and I will certainly try. I certainly subscribed to your channel and will, as far as possible, learn from your experience. Thank you again!
That was another very educational video. Immediately I will get a white canvas, acrylic paint and cardboard, normally I paint on black canvas with hot wax sometimes mixed with acrylic paint. Thank you.
Great Wonderful application of paint with card board and use for texture as well and blending using a large canvas and use of side colors too. You detailed it afterwards to give it a pattern triangle shaped as you look at it as a whole it pops outwardly in painting. Very good job. I like it. Fun tools you made yourself simple yet works!!
Thank you. I love the colors, the outcome and technique. I always thought that abstracts still had a theme which the painter distorts. I think this is the way it should be. I'll try your technique. I'm bored with realistic art... haha. This is more interesting...
And I wish you luck Nora. I prefer to let colours and shapes find their won path rather than having a pre-determined course; in many ways it feels a lot more natural and real to me.
Thanks for your wonderful vedios.... You are an excellent Master... I like very much your work and your style of teaching. As an artist I have got inspiration from your works. Hats off to you....

The bigger the canvas the easier it is since you’re freer and less conscious of the limitations of space.
