So nobody else cares about "Sick Love"? It's the only song on the album that I put on repeat a few times before continuing through, the chorus is awesome to sing along to. It felt like filler the first few listens, but now it's definitely my favorite.
I couldn`t disagree more. Yes, the album is mellow and theres some weak moment on this album, but it`s definitly more inventive and wide ranged than the last album. And many of the songs are among the most catchy songs they ever had. And wouldnt it be more lame if they tried to make Blood Sugar Sex Magic part II at the age of 50?
I think it is inventive in some ways. The keyboards creates an extra layer. "The Hunter", "Encore" and "Dreams of a Samurai" points to this and this songs have something new. added to them. I think the corus on "Longest Wave" is quite beautiful. "We Turn Red", "The Ticonderoga" and "Detroit" takes you back, but with the more mature addings to it. "Go Robot" is a silly little ditty with a cheesy seventies disco taste that could be annoying, but it works as a nostalgic, fun refreshener to me. It adds something new to the album. But there are too many weak moments to make it a really great. You could take the best songs from "I`m With You" and add them to this new album and you would have the perfect album. Even the title would be better "I`m With You At the Getaway". Live has always been a problem for RHCP. They do great shows and they do awful shows. Josh is not John and hes voice is not strong enough and as you say, hes not a strong enough solo guitarist. The idea for a funky jazz album with horns could work for me, but i don`t think it would be popular enough.... RHCP is a pop/rock band.
So much of this. I think so many fans just want RHCP to keep making funk rock bangers like their past, but they have to realize that they’re not gonna keep making the same thing forever. They’re evolving and making what they want, and it shouldn’t be compared to Blood Sugar Sex Magik or Californication every 6 seconds. They put way more passion into these new mellower albums than if they tried to ride their old style until death like a lot of other rock bands in the modern age.
@@KyleMozza yes bro i was wrong when I made this comment. When i made the comment ive only listened to the album once. Too mellow? Compared to Blood Sugar, sure. But why compare? It's 2016 RCHP. Get with the times. Every track is great. People need to stop comparing, comparing, comparing. Every time a rock band wanders off and does something slightly different they get burned by "supposed" fans. The heart and soul of RHCP is here on this album, if you actually listen to it. I'm gonna start to my own video reviews, these kids don't know what they're talking about.
As a huge Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, I beileve that you need to listen to this album at least 3 times to really appreciate it. You also need to kind of forget about what they did in the past; Realize that it's a new era for them. It's not my favorite album, but it's a good one none of the less. I'd personally rate it a 7 or 8. Imo, Go Robot, Goodbye Angels, Dark Necessities and Encore are just amazing.
I really enjoy this album. I think the journey of I'm With You & The Getaway shows Josh's place in the band. He is so much more present in this album and I think he's a brilliant song writer, his input is extremely impressive. And I totally disagree with the slating of Anthony Kiedis' vocals. I think he performed great on the album. 10 times better than I'm With You or any of the IWY B-Sides. The lyrics are back too. My only downside is the chorus of 'Detroit.' Couldn't get into it.
I had the same with Detroit at first but after listening to it a couple of times I got what they were trying to do there and now it's one of my favorite tracks of the record'
I've never understood this backlash against the Chili Peppers from the likes of Fantano fans and music hipsters. I have no problems with people not liking them but when they deny their musical creativity out of petty things like "anthony kiedis is a jerk" I have to wonder if people have really taken the time to explore their discography or just have some impressionable disdain for them due to their mainstream popularity and radio saturation.
encore was the best song on the album. feasting on the flowers was the most hardcore funky-in-the-right-way song. my favorite band for years...still didn't really dig this.
To me, Goodbye Angels was the best. Those last 50 seconds blew my mind the first time around. I've listened to this record back to back more than 15 times already and that outro still doesn't fail to send chills down my spine. The Getaway, Encore, and Dreams of a Samurai were also great.
how come no one seems to acknowledge sick love? personally I thought it was one of if not the best track on the record but no one else seems to even mention it when talking about the album
@Anderson Cooper "plays to chili's strenghts", more like it plays to rhcp's mediocrity in the end of the 90s and the 2000s. Californication is meh, by the way is decent and stadium is a 2hr long torture by boredom. One hot minute is superior to all the albums that came after it
@Anderson Cooper commercial viability isn't always a proof of how good an album is, that's common knowledge at this point. Don't get me wrong, californication has amazing songs (this velvet glove is one of my favs), BTW overall is pretty constant in having good songs, and bssm is where they peaked, no doubt about that. I just think one hot minute is heavily underrated, of course it isn't perfect but imo it has some of the best moments in rhcp discography
Im a needle drop fan but I find he is getting quite pessimistic, he begins with high expectations and doesn't seem to like albums that arn't experimental. Obviously the RHCP's albums are going to sound different now that they are in they're fifties
Agreed, he and other major, more lazy critics, focus on meeting the pinnacles of past albums such as BSSM and using too many labels. Here, he is definitely pessimistic, only pointing out what he doesn't like in almost half of this album. He doesn't even analyze the "good" songs here.
I'm such a big fan of RHCP that I'm sure I want to like their stuff maybe more than I actually do. But regardless, I think this is a step up from their last record. I think Josh is much more confident in his guitar work, Flea continues to be an animal-beast from a different planet, and Will Ferrell is still best comedic actor/drummer on earth (seriously, where does he find the time?). Truthfully, I feel the band as a whole hit its peak with Stadium Arcadium. That was essentially their White Album, in my opinion. It had something for everyone, including pop hits, dark poetry, and somber, soulful tunes. They may very well be in their twilight years, and if you ask me, these years are pretty enjoyable. This is where they're at, and I dig it for what it is. I can't put it on the same shelf as BSSM, Californication, By The Way, and Stadium (that's the big 4 that I think you can argue for each one as being "their best" thanks much in part to Frusciante). But as a Chili Pepper fan, I'm really satisfied and inspired.
How could you not enjoy this album?? The band has evolved over time, and it's great to listen to what they come up with. Great album, and amazing band.
'The Getaway' is perfect, in my opinion. If you can't ride change's embrace as it comes on unexpectedly, you're gonna have a bad time. The album, musically, is exactly what I've been needing for... I can't even tell you how long. Fuck numbers/10.
What I've noticed with Anthony is that if a band tries going for a new style of music, he will say "this album isn't very good, it isn't the same as it used to be". Doesn't make much sense to me because whats the point in all albums sounding the same? Maybe its just me....
Lachie Ranga That is just not at all true. In my memory Anthony just listens to something and decides if he likes it or not. If a band does something new and refreshing, thats mostly a positive thing
The thing with RHCP is that they always were a live band. Their albums are pale in comparison. Watch any show, from 1989's Psychedelic Sex Funk Live from Heaven (come on, the title alone is great) right up to their Chorzow, Poland performance in 2007, as well as the incomparably wonderful Slane Castle performance in 2003, and then follow that by listening to their albums: you'll see my point demonstrated. Live, they reach completely new heights. Their energy, their raw emotion, their dedication, their skill (especially at improvisation), their connection to each other and to the audience, and the love they communicate is so incredibly powerful. Admittedly, I think this was more the case with John in the band, and as much as I love Josh and his quirkiness, I think that RHCP lost a big chunk of soul when he (re)left. But for anyone who just doesn't get RHCP, watch the last 7 or so minutes of their jam at Chorzow and your life will be forever altered. You're welcome.
I respect it but WOW I've never disagreed more with anything in my life. This album is a 10 in my book, It swallows you in the sound It's so easy to get lost in it and groove along. Probably my favorite RHCP album (Haven't heard all of them, but so far this one is my favorite), every song is goated (This Ticonderoga maybe is the worst part but It still slaps)
so you dislike that they haven't branched out with new ideas but also dont like that their style of music is changing to a more mellow one because its different? ok...
So you're upset that they don't sound like their old self, but also upset that they're not trying anything new, which is false by the way. Are you sure you know what you're talking about?
Dreams of a Samurai requires a relisten dude. Once you get into the groove you can't escape and it really pushes you into a new dimension. Speaking of, Feasting on the Flowers is a tearjerker. Encore is my favorite track, followed closely by The Hunter.
I don't understand what you're complaining about, it feels as if you went into this album expecting it to be bad, of course The Chili Peppers will most likely never top "Blood Sugar Sex Magick" or "By The Way" but this album is certainly a wonderful follow up to their criminally underrated album "I'm with you" also, you're saying that they should do what they've done before to stay good but then complain that they ripped themselves with familiarity and should've done something new, well, make up your mind, do you want something new? Or do you want a callback?
The record for me didn't have the same edge or funk that they're previous ones have had, but I still really enjoyed it. The chemistry and the talent are definitely still there.
Definitely agree with the fact that there are some rehashes and incosistencies, but I actually really liked the spin Danger Mouse put on it. Gutless is far from the word I'd use to describe this album. Whether I still say the same as I keep re-listening (and I WILL be re-listening) is tbd, but I enjoyed it. Also, I may have missed it, but I don't think I heard anything about Feasting on the Flowers. It was actually one of my favorite tracks. What are your thoughts?
Dude.. thank u so much for commenting this. I searched her up and because of u I found my new fav artist atm! Just been listening 1 hour to her songs and didn't find one I disliked.. glad I found a real artistic musician, which is rare these days :
+Tony Primera lol what the fuck they are completely different. just because they're both female indie artists doesn't mean one is a knock off of the other
Any chance on a review of Gojira's new album "Magma"? I know you didn't like their last effort because of the lack of experimentation, but that really changed on their new record and I'd love to hear your opinion on it!
I tried signing up for Cymbal and all I got was an error at the "follow 4 people to finish signing up" page. But that was still more exciting than a new RHCP record.
IMO the longest wave displays how truly good Josh is, I agree that the vocals and drums are quite simplistic but the guitar itself makes it my favourite song from this album
Huge Chili Peppers fan here! I didn't agree with everything you said, but I did appreciate the points you brought up and this review helped me think about this album in a different light.
I feel like this album is an album that grows on you, I'm a massive chili's fan but I wasn't too hot on it at first, however the more I listen to it the more I love it
Great review, totally agree with everything you said. Last good album RHCP IMO was Stadium Arcadium. Been a peppers fan since the 80's but without Frusciante, it's a losing battle
This album is fucking amazing and I really like 'I'm with You' as well. I've always loved thier softer songs and consider both their hard funk and smooth melodies collectively as the music staple that is the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I feel that if the chilli peppers are to continue on their current path of making more subdued, melodic songs flea needs to be more of a forefront in order for it to work. Every recent song of theirs I've enjoyed puts him center stage which tends to liven up everything else and give it more of an upbeat energy, which is what many of their fans are wanting more of.
Anthony I don't know if you'll read this, but I really liked first song in the album, the getaway, the ending part of it was amazing and that faint female voice that goes Aaaaaah really sold it for me. 10/10 album. Dark necessities and go robot are also cool and catchy songs.
I see that many people here don't know who chilis really are and why are they so good and quality band. Their best side is when they play live. Improvisation and pure emotions that they express which depends on a very moment (especialy in Frusciante's era). You will never hear the exact same intro, outro or solo of the one song. Many of the bands play exactly the same song as it was recorded and as time goes they lose that passion while performing. There's no so many bands like RHCP that have this ability and this kind of understandig of the purpose of music.

if you arent going tro talk about the review or music on this channel. dont comment
Rewatching to remind myself if this was rated higher than Unlimited Love and it is. Thank you
Strong 5??? Jesus, this is my favorite RHCP album.
before watching: lemme guess he hates it
after watching: yep he hates
do you even like music anymore?
that's what I said
He missed the mark.
Did you even watching the entire review? He clearly didn't hate it.
Hulk Hogan's right
Today I learned 5/10 is a hateful score
7/10 best album since By The Way
Stadium Arcadium is way better than I'm With You and The Getaway
CALIFORNICATION IS STILL MY FAVORITE!!
you think this is better than stadium arcadium? okay then...
Stadium Arcadium is super bloated. There's a really good single album hiding in that two hours of music
Like most double albums
This album is a great road trip album. Put this album while cruising on the freeway you will love it! Thumbs up if you agree!
WHAT?! An album recorded by a bunch of 50 year olds is mellow?
You mean Bowie? Oh no,no... he was older... and fucking brutal til the end.
Ironically, Josh Klinghoffer (guitarist) is the youngest member of the band (at 36 years old), and his sound/influence is the most mellow.
swans got a 10
Have you ever heard of Meshuggah?
Kaleb Webb
Dude, there are artists out there who are older and have been making better new music.
we will all die sometime
Not me
But you see, you are a mere mortal, but I will live on forever as that shithead who shitposts and has Andrea Pirlo as his profile pic.
Anthony Fantano
+MAN I love Pirlo man, Italy will lose to Germany tho
jaidsalgado for sue
This was my summer 2016 soundtrack, I had this CD playing all the time in my car. Playing Encore on a summer night...good stuff.
It pains me that Encore didn’t get any mention in this review
And yes, this album is miles better than Unlimited Love, which was supposed to be the Frusciante's comeback to "save" the band LOL
Underrated album tho, aged well and it's better than the last two.
the longest wave was one of my favourite songs from the getaway
so you dislike that they haven't branched out with new ideas but also dont like that their style of music is changing to a more mellow one because its different? ok...
This album is actually really cool
So you're upset that they don't sound like their old self, but also upset that they're not trying anything new, which is false by the way. Are you sure you know what you're talking about?
I think the Getaway is a very good album. And Josh did a really good work.
I would say Feasting on the Flowers is a pretty fun breezy jam. One of my favorites on the album.
this album was like an 8 to me. It’s so fucking good
Dreams of a Samurai requires a relisten dude. Once you get into the groove you can't escape and it really pushes you into a new dimension.
Speaking of, Feasting on the Flowers is a tearjerker. Encore is my favorite track, followed closely by The Hunter.
Dark Necessities is by far the best song on this album
I came from the future and the next album is 4/10 with John Frusciante lmaaao
Came here to tell the same - This album is way better than Unlimited Love LOL
I don't understand what you're complaining about, it feels as if you went into this album expecting it to be bad, of course The Chili Peppers will most likely never top "Blood Sugar Sex Magick" or "By The Way" but this album is certainly a wonderful follow up to their criminally underrated album "I'm with you" also, you're saying that they should do what they've done before to stay good but then complain that they ripped themselves with familiarity and should've done something new, well, make up your mind, do you want something new? Or do you want a callback?
Let's get Cymbal spread around the world man, been waiting for an app like these for some time now
2:25 to skip the sellout
The record for me didn't have the same edge or funk that they're previous ones have had, but I still really enjoyed it. The chemistry and the talent are definitely still there.
Ur wrong it's a 7 at least
LOL
lmao
lol you hear thus guy? "7 at least" get outta here
How can his opinion be wrong?
it's 3 on a good day
Definitely agree with the fact that there are some rehashes and incosistencies, but I actually really liked the spin Danger Mouse put on it.
What are your thoughts?
holy cow where is mitski
It's likely to appear in multiple "Best of 2016" lists
literally everywhere else
Dude.. thank u so much for commenting this. I searched her up and because of u I found my new fav artist atm! Just been listening 1 hour to her songs and didn't find one I disliked.. glad I found a real artistic musician, which is rare these days :
shes just a st vincent knock off that's slightly jazzy
+Tony Primera lol what the fuck they are completely different. just because they're both female indie artists doesn't mean one is a knock off of the other
Any chance on a review of Gojira's new album "Magma"? I know you didn't like their last effort because of the lack of experimentation, but that really changed on their new record and I'd love to hear your opinion on it!
I'm curious as well!!
L'enfant sauvage is better than magma. I don't think he is going to like it
Dominik Hanuš well he said he didn't like L'Enfant because of its lack of progressive elements, and Magma was pretty progressive. Who knows?
I just wanna know. I already bought it and want to hear a different perspective.
I honestly love the album. Thought it flowed well and I disagree with just about everything you say, EXCEPT Anthony's rhyme scheme, haha.
I tried signing up for Cymbal and all I got was an error at the "follow 4 people to finish signing up" page. But that was still more exciting than a new RHCP record.
It's definitely 100 times better than "I'm With You".
I disagree on This Ticonderoga, I love the fast heavy guitar riff.
Pls review Hall & Oates Greatest Hits Vol.1 .
IMO the longest wave displays how truly good Josh is, I agree that the vocals and drums are quite simplistic but the guitar itself makes it my favourite song from this album
6.5/10 (from a lifelong/huge Peppers disciple).
Agree with the review almost in its entirety, barring one point -- Go Robot is a damn good song (apart from the abrupt fadeout ending you mentioned).
I'm in the same boat - I'm a huge RHCP fan, but this album is maybe a 6 for me.
how about now
On a scale of Randy Quaid to Christopher Walken, this album is a strong James Franco.
Huge Chili Peppers fan here! I didn't agree with everything you said, but I did appreciate the points you brought up and this review helped me think about this album in a different light.
I to use AKG240s, glad to see we both have good taste in audio :)
I liked Go Robot, actually :(
I feel like this album is an album that grows on you, I'm a massive chili's fan but I wasn't too hot on it at first, however the more I listen to it the more I love it
Great review, totally agree with everything you said. Last good album RHCP IMO was Stadium Arcadium. Been a peppers fan since the 80's but without Frusciante, it's a losing battle
Dreams of a Samurai is a fucking 5/4 good closing song, so much underrated man
Thanks Anchovie Fishtano
What an awful review. This album is 8/10 at least and it’s better than 90% of the music put out today
Please review Blink-182 California!
This album is fucking amazing and I really like 'I'm with You' as well. I've always loved thier softer songs and consider both their hard funk and smooth melodies collectively as the music staple that is the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Lol this is there best album in years!! I don't like this guy's reviews always negative!
WANNA KNOW WHY THEY ARENT AS FUNKY??
John isn't on the group anymore ://///
In my opinion, Dave Navarro did more for the group than Josh Klinghoffer
What a legend he is. Most of my favourite RHCP tracks features his epic lead guitar.
i hope they don't turn into a shitty indie group
when Antony gives an album a bad review I kno I'm going to like the album
I feel that if the chilli peppers are to continue on their current path of making more subdued, melodic songs flea needs to be more of a forefront in order for it to work. Every recent song of theirs I've enjoyed puts him center stage which tends to liven up everything else and give it more of an upbeat energy, which is what many of their fans are wanting more of.
“I’m forever near a stereo saying, ‘What the fuck is this garbage?’ And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers.” - Nick Cave
lol
Fuck, I loved Nick Cave until this very second.
i believe that was a sarcastic/humorous quote lol
he was right
+BASSOONISTFROMHELL I disagree
Anthony I don't know if you'll read this, but I really liked first song in the album, the getaway, the ending part of it was amazing and that faint female voice that goes Aaaaaah really sold it for me. 10/10 album.
Dark necessities and go robot are also cool and catchy songs.
I think it is josh's voice lol, but im not sure tho
How dare you criticize these musical geniuses... Who are out of fresh ideas!
