That was stunning! The landscapes there are amazing and this lightning just makes everything GLOW. The lake crossing was the final touch. You sure had a great time driving these roads!
It makes you wonder why they didn't install median barriers in the first section? That would improve safety, in particular with the snow they get up there in the winter. The space is there.
I wondered that too. I'm not sure either, it certainly looks to be built to the same standard as BC's other four-lane divided highways with concrete median barriers. The section concurrent with 5A was widened quite a while after the rest of the Connector was built.
I've noticed this in a lot of sections of Highway in BC. There are sections of BC Highway 97 north of Vernon that also do this where the road has been essentially divided and has a centre buffer lane but again, no barriers. Example at the seven min 14 part of my Vernon video: ruclips.net/video/ASGJw-qLFZY/видео.htmlm13s
It’s because BCMoT planned to have a proper freeway shortcut through Kane valley with grade separated interchanges from around the aspen grove exit on the connector to the Kane valley road underpass on the coquihala. It would save over 30 minutes between Kelowna and Vancouver. So the section with no barriers was never intended to be the mainline and Merritt would be bypassed
Yay, a BC video! 😀 Also, regarding your mention of a freeway bypass around Kelowna, where would they build that? The bridge across the lake dumps traffic right into downtown Kelowna, so they'd have to build a new bridge somewhere else, or build a tunnel under Kelowna. Really curious to see those plans. Also, that's a LOT of billboards at 17:32! 😲
The by-pass would be to the west and north of the current highway, and would feature a new bridge. The BCMoT indicates that the current bridge will reach capacity in about 2040.
@@rdsieben elevated highways are bad investments. They have seismic issues and have a short lifespan. Flat at ground highway bypass that goes around is the best option.
I had no idea that Pennask was the highest. I would have figured that either Rogers or Yoho pass would have been higher. You're knowledge of the world's highway networks never ceases to amaze.
I got a used Class C Motorhome, about 30 feet long. We go up to Elkhart and on the drive back, I don't think I've ever given that much attention to run-away lanes.
Great video. Used to drive this highway all the time. Curious to know, how many people heading to Kelowna actually stop in Merritt. I think they should have gone with the Kane Valley route
Wow! That was a spectacular drive! Once the US and Canada open the border for non-commercial traffic, you should go to West Virginia and drive US-19 between Interstate 79 and the West Virginia Turnpike. Very similar roads.
This video is going to lure more Americans to want to drive into, and through Beautiful British Columbia, Canada 😃😃😃😃😃. You guys at asphaltplanet.ca are awesome 😃😃😃😃😃. Keep up the magnificent work you guys do 😃😃😃😃😃.
Wow that view at 17:38, absolutely amazing. Always loved scenic drives like these, great video and tunes too!
I had a great time filming this. It was a beautiful warm day for a drive. I was lucky to have gotten the opportunity. Thanks for the comment
Oh I see traveling in my favorite Province BRITISH COLUMBIA EH!!!!!!!🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Super, natural, British Columbia
Asphalt Planet Very cool!

Thanks for the comment. This is a gorgeous road, and I did have a great time driving it. Kelowna is a beautiful city as well.
Wow, the scenery up there is absolutely stunning...
It's gorgeous. I was lucky to get to drive it.
Fantastic ride from beginning to end, but *ESPECIALLY* as you dropped down into Kelowna. Jaw-dropping views for sure!
Thanks for the comment Brent

@@victoriavisscher8239 Yes, for political reasons Merritt was not bypassed.
They should install Jersey barriers in the first part and build an interchange at 5A and a freeflow interchange at Highway 5.
Yay, a BC video! 😀

@@AsphaltPlanet1 Interesting, that would sure cost a lot of money.
@@AsphaltPlanet1 they could build an elevated 2-3 lane highway with reversible lanes above Harvey Avenue with limited access and no stop lights

I believe Pennask Summit is also the highest freeway / four lane highway in Canada. It's quite a bit higher than the Coquihalla Pass.
I had no idea that Pennask was the highest. I would have figured that either Rogers or Yoho pass would have been higher. You're knowledge of the world's highway networks never ceases to amaze.
The BC Hwy 97 arriving at Kelowna, there's a lot of vehicles. In my opinion, it should've 3 lanes per direction

The Coq gets all the credit but this one's just as key! 😁✌️

The Best Part about this Drive is that It’s 4 Lanes while having very Beautiful Landscape and Forests.

I've actually driven US-19 in West Virginia, I just didn't film it. US-33 is my personal favourite in WV.
Reminds me of some of the rural elements of the 400 series highways in Ontario.
I suppose their is something somewhat similar to the rock outcrops in a jackpine forest.

10:26 Amazing View!
Yeah, this road is really pretty
How did the fire season of 2021 impact this region of BC?
I also did this drive over the summer, was surprised at how quiet the highway was. Kelowna was a totally different story though.
Kelowna is awesome.
A reversible zipper-lane on the floating bridge would be neat tpp
Do you listen to progressive house mix while driving?
No, Never. But I find alternative music often isn’t up tempo enough to keep me interested in watching a drivelapse video like this.
@@AsphaltPlanet1 This is definitely something that I didn't know
Have you followed the news on BC landslides and floodings?
I did
