What do Red Pandas Eat!? *Making Red Panda Bars at Taronga Zoo*

Do you have a favourite food? Of course you do - we all have things we LOVE to eat! Sometimes, though, we can love our favourite foods just a little bit tooooo much. This can become an issue if our favourite foods aren't healthy when eaten in excess.
This same dilemma can affect animals in zoos. Red Pandas LOVE fruit, and often Red Pandas being cared for in zoos can become slightly addicted to fruit and all the tasty sugars inside. In the wild, however, Red Pandas predominantly eat bamboo - so its not ideal for them to feast on large amounts of fruit.
But in an environment where bamboo is tough to grow or sustain, how can zoos create a diet rich in all the essential nutritional components a Red Panda needs to be healthy and thrive?

That was fantastic. The food prep area is huge, and yes, it looked like something Heston would have. Loved it. Wished we could smell the mash. Rolling the Panda bars could be quite meditative. Honestly, Taronga could market a muesli bar called the Red Panda Bar and they would sell really well. They would be a perfect snack to have on hand when visiting the zoo. You could sell them online also. Everyone loves Red Pandas. :)
