Thanks guys, I’m an ex Land Rover owner (for nearly 30 years) who now drives a Hilux, who really misses his Land Rover! I always appreciate your efforts, great entertainment. Love the comment from Vera about the girlie calendar in the workshop, so refreshing just to hear humour without the silly political correctness of today’s society.
That was a great install Christian. And yes, the cable length does not matter, it is the antenna that matters. I have never seen a screw adjustment for the SWR, only the wire that you would trim or add to get the best SWR reading. Having said that, the antenna manufacturers usually had too much so you would mostly trim, not add. Even then it was only a few millimetres of trimming required. Tuning the antenna will give the optimum performance out of the radio with both transmit & receive operations. In Australia we went away from what we know as CB radios (27MHz wave length) to UHF which is in the 433MHz wave length range. Either one is great for convoys, though UHF is a little more reliable over longer distances. Plus we have repeater stations scattered over the country which will give further distances. I have never needed to transmit on a repeater channel as it is not needed when talking car to car in convoy. I bought a UHF with the controls on the hand piece. The main body would fit in the palm of my hand. I installed it under the dash hidden from view. The hand piece is mounted on the dash between the stereo & the steering wheel.
UHF CB is definitely not dead and is essential for convoy travel and communication with other vehicles in remote areas especially on desert crossings. Good video thanks. I personally prefer the units that have a remote head meaning the main box is installed under the seat and all the controls and the display are on the hand piece.
The size of the antenna definitely matters, and with CB where the wavelength is 11m even more ;-) It would also be worth checking antenna fits, for example with a NanoVna analyzer . As always, it was great to watch you, best regards to You Two
Hi, dont hold the PTT button for too long without setting the SWR. When the SWR is bad it causes the outputs to overheat quickly and blows the output transistor in the radio.
Thank you for the entertainment today. I'm always amazed at the resources you have at home. I wonder how typical this is of a German family. Most people in UK are not engineering inclined and wouldn't have a clue about any of your machinery and tools. Many thanks to you both.
I used to use CB radio 40yrs ago when I worked in the Yorkshire Dales but I've never used it since! We have used two way walkie talkies before mobile phones came along but they're long gone. Hope you have fun with yours Cheers.... 👍
I would have mounted the aerial mount on the roof rack out of the way and arms reach, as usual a great video and a excellent workshop set up. .a small toggle switch in line with the 12 volts supply to save the radio coming on when the ignition is turned on and save it draining the battery.
We do not want to route the antenna cable from the roof, nor do I want a loose antenna cable lying around my car when the antenna is not in use . 👍🙋♀️Vera
I saw my license plate up on the wall!!!! The shop is to die for. I wish mine had half the tools. The antenna bracket gave me a great idea how to mount my GMRS antenna. Thank you. If you put an on/off switch there above you could avoid having to turn the radio off every time you start the engine. More wiring, more switches!!! More coolness.
Hi Vera, as you mention CB radios are not dead. I use mine a lot when 4x4ing particularly at the Land Rover Party in Spain where we drive in convoy on the tracks. That's a very tidy install. Regards Peter.
Another cracking video, thanks. Inspiring me to work on my LR3. I remember CB in the 80's - everyone wanted to be called 'Black Mamba' or 'Vader' (Star Wars was not long out)... It's been away too long :)
This brings thing rushing all back now, about 30+ years ago me and my mates all had cb radios in our cars , was great for meets and catching up . Had a mag- mount base and long whip antenna on car roof , so easy to take it off at night. Good times then back in the UK 🇬🇧 also we're alot more bulky back then with big buttons and knobs.
1. 4. For a copy good buddy. I had a cb radio in the 80’s.. I love your rain shelter you made right at the end of the video. I love your banter, you are like a German Laurel and Hardy. 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Oh and another tip. To get a great professional finish on any stainless steel like your bracket . Use an orbital sander with 400 grit sand paper. Gives what's commonly known as a "non directional" finish
Hey you two! A very interesting video, and entertaining. The last time I had a CB radio was in 1989!! when it was installed in my lorry 😉. Brought back some memories 😁. take care
Congratulations on your new radio. Looks great and I particularly like the positioning of the antenna. Once again a perfect implementation. The climax in this video can be found at position 15:52. What a nice young couple 😂 See you soon.
I know it's not a shopping channel but in the interests of providing good LR advice it's worth mentioning another option, i.e. all in handset type like the Cobra 75 WX ST. I had one in my D2 for years. Same performance and functionality as a built in without the dashboard modification.
Radio communication is instant you do not have to dial a number and wait for them to pickup the call. Also it is far more cost effective. CB or other radio communication is not dead.
Another fantastic video! Sunday is the beginning of my weekend so I look forward to your new video each week. :-) now time for me to see what's causing the belt squeal in my Lr3 and address a big crack that appeared on my dash with the change in temperature:-( Have a wonderful Sunday!
This is a shout out to you all. I live in a community of apartments with private parking bays, today someone stole all the catalytic converters from all the Toyota cars, but did not touch any other vehicle. On close inspection it looks like there is no steel protection plate that covers the converter, maybe this is why the Toyotas are an easy target. I know this is a Land Rover channel, but was hoping had some knowledge on how you can make to more difficult for someone to steel your catalytic converter.
Yeah that really sucks. My Discovery does not have a dpf, most earlier models, 2005 and 2006, do not have one. And I am not 100% sure, but the DPF from our Mall Crawler is indeed underneath a protection plate. It's Christian's daily and he is at work, but I will check later on. @@Vera_and_Christian Yes, stock they're all 4W in FM, and that's more than enough for convoi driving or spotting, even beyond that. But you should really think about relocating the antenna onto the roof. Makes a huge difference. At its current location the main beam of the radiation goes across the bonnet, as antennas need HF ground plain to spread HF waves.
Neat installation, I have a CB (27 Mhz) antenna on my left wing and a PMR (446 Mhz) on my right wing I didn't make my brackets (LRP) my radios are mounted on brodit brackets either side of the transmission tunnel. Another great video 👍 Your installation looked good; but for anyomne watching, it's important not to crush the antenna cable in any way nor to kink it as this adversly affects the signal as it changes the impedance of the cable. Also, making the cable shorter does actually affect the performance - it makes it better - as you get losses down the cable and a shorter cable will be better. (Explanation - I worked for many years as Technical Manager at Sennheiser UK and had to plan out a lot of radiomicrophone systems). A very nice installation and great to watch. What was the 3D print for? That was not explained - and I assume you will paint it to match.
you want the antenna as high as possible and separate wiring to the battery and you needed a swr/power meter to test the SWR-Standing Wave Ratio it has been over 40 years since i was into CB over 40 years ago and been a ham radio ever since oh and if you have the antenna on the front it will give more signal to the back and vice versa if you have it up on the rack in the middle you will give a equal signal all round good luck thanks for the video
