You’re a great teacher! I’m trying to decide one of three options 1. Lime wash entire room with one wall behind my bed in one color and remaining walls in a complimentary color 2. Lime wash only the wall behind my bed in a deeper tone and use regular paint on remaining walls in complimentary color. 3. Lime wash all bedroom walls in one lighter neutral color.
Thank you so much! I think no matter which way you go, it’ll come out awesome! My vote would probably go with either one color for the whole space! I think it really would make a beautiful canvas for the space for you to accent with furniture and decor. I think it’s enough of a feature that you don’t need to squeeze in 2 different colors. Just a thought! Good luck with your project!
Lime Blueing and I think pink cement. We called it white wash. Used it like 52 years ago as a 9 year old in Arizona. It was for the outsides of stuco type homes.
Watched this video before I started a big lime wash job for a customer, chosen by their interior decorator. Although the product I used was different, pre-mixed & was a lot thinner, these tips were super helpful.
If your walls are either masonry, or (in old and historic homes) you may find that under your acrylic is..... lime plaster and/or limewash paint! These walls do not need primed...BUT - if there is color, such as various color layers of old lime paint, you'll need an extra coat or two to cover up the old color. I also added salt to my limewash to eliminate the chalky rub-off that will happen with lime-washed walls. Concrete/mortar colorant is an easy and inexpensive way to color your paint. i have done yellow/beige (needed more coats), gunmetal grey, and red-earth colored walls. If you take a painted sample (cardboard or wood) into the paint store, you can match it to acrylic paint on the other walls. In bedrooms, I painted the outside (lime plaster over brick) walls with lime paint, and matched the color with acrylic paint on the interior walls. On a rainy day your lime paint on an outside brick wall will sprout dark patches before drying out again. Don't worry - this is the natural way your wall will dissipate the moisture. This is also why some plaster walls in Europe have stood for hundreds of years - effective moisture dissipation.
I love the result. I really liked the fact that you used photos at the beginning for a visual and the details after. Worth watching. Nicely done. Thanks
Really thank you very much! I’m going to be applying this process on exterior stucco columns and front door casing. I have been painting for over 30 years and you learn something new every day, really appreciate it thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks for your comment! I’d recommend doing some extra research before you start. If it’s exterior stucco you may not need to prime at all (and if you do choose to prime first, you should use lime or mineral primer). Good luck with your project!!
Do you have to paint your walls a base colour before adding the lime wash? My bedroom walls are dark blue and I want my lime wash colour to be more of a beige undertone. Should I buy white paint to have first and then primer and then Lime wash?

Hello, I have orange peel walls and was wondering if you would recommend limewash for this type of textured drywall, as I noticed yours are smooth. Thanks!
Love this! What do you do if it's going on concrete and it has existing chipped paint on it. What prepping needs to be done about the existing paint that is chipped.
Not sure exactly how to answer that question. If you’re doing this on unpainted concrete, technically primer shouldn’t be needed but you may need extra coats. If it’s painted, you need to prime- I recommend a mineral primer. Check out my second limewash video for more info 👍🏼
@@joshmrivera Thank you. I'll try that. Yes it has been painted several times several colors. I can tell because it's chipped and peeled away. It looks awful. I hope this will work.
I used a very light colour and the cloudy effect wasn't too strong, to be honest I can barely see it. Do you think this is because of the shade of the paint was too light? Thanks
Can I please ask what is the name of the acrylic primer, the link you shared to Home Depot is out. This video is just what I was looking for. More information is always better than not enough, THANK YOU.
Thanks so much. Clearly folks are getting interested in this as companies start to create expensive products. My questions, if you happen to see these. My block brush was expensive , over 30 dollars so I hope it can be used more than once. Just wash in cold water? I bought lime putty from American clay but I"m not going to buy more from them so can I use the putty and add color to it and do I need to use acrylic primer if I have plaster walls? They are painted. Thanks a lot.. so beautiful
If your walls are painted already, you would still need to prime first. You could do that, or use a mineral/lime primer for absolute best results. The brush can be used multiple times. I’ve had mine for quite some time and have completed 4 projects with it so far. I haven’t looked up any cleaning directions but I generally just use warm water until it all washes out. And lastly, as far as buying to make your own, I haven’t ever tried this. But it sounds fun! I would love to hear how it goes for you. And if you think it’s much cheaper in the end than buying it ready-made. Good luck!!
Sounds like you just need to prime/patch up the walls then you can limewash. If you have more questions check out my second limewash video before starting 👍🏼
You are amazing explaing things, Idk if u are gonna see my coment, but I want to do this in one of my rooms and I was thinking that if I do some clouds first like just in little spots and then start with the normal process it maybe be more textured, BUT idk if I will just mess up the wall?
Hey there. Try it out! The fun of DIYs is experimenting! Haha But no that will not ruin your walls. It can add to the texture in some way, but I wouldn’t expect a huge texture change from doing that, unless you do multiple coats of smaller clouds first. But to be honest, I’m not 100% sure. Let me know how your project goes!
What colour are using?? I have never painted before,do you think it's better I use that roller stick to paint or just use the brush 🖌️..The way you did looks so nice and easy..Thank you soo much
The color is called Nube Gray. For limewash you’re definitely going to want to use a block brush in order to get the signature textured finish. I have links in the description box to the paint/supplies I used. Hope that helps!
Great instructions! Thank you! I can't really tell...when everything is dry, is it a "strokey" look from the brush bristles or does it look like a soft blended textured wall without distinct lines? I hope that makes sense ;/ Have you ever done or seen limewash paint on a brick fireplace? If I were to plaster the brick fireplace and then do a limewash, would I need to use the acrylic primer? if you have a moment...I'd really appreciate your input :)
You can DIY your own limewash and add pigment in yourself. Just do a quick Google search and you should be able to find the materials you’ll need. Good luck!
How exciting and wonderful. Just what I’ve been wishing I knew.....Thought it could only be achieved painting on plaster, and didn’t know how AND didn’t have plaster walls anymore, lol! I’m so excited about possibilities!
Hi Josh. I’m re doing my daughters room. There is one part of the ceiling that has a line on it. Must be one of the beams is a little lower or something. It’s not a huge line but my husband notices it. I was wondering if this technique will cover up something like that. Is it something that would look silly just in a ceiling? Have you ever done it on all the walls AND. The ceiling? Thanks for answering Debbie
Thanks for the video. Can I get your opinion on the matte sealers? Pros and cons? I hung a piece of drywall in my basement for practice. I like the results but when I look at the product at an angle I see the brush strokes and they have a chalky finish that Im not crazy about. But when I apply the matte sealer it does tone down chalky finish but I think it also changes the character a bit but not in a good way. Any thoughts?
I hear you. Personally I prefer it without the sealer, unless it’s in a high moisture area. In those cases I think durability is more important. But overall I prefer it in the way it was meant to be, open to air and breathable. And I wouldn’t want to finish finish diminish the classic look. Thanks for the question!
@@joshmrivera Thanks for the feedback. I have some left over lime prep primer from James Alexander. I also have a full can of lime prep primer from Bauwerk. I don't have enough primer to coat my living room unless I mix the primers together. Do you think I'd have any problems if I mixed lime prep primers from two different companies? Also, do you need to take off the tape and reapply tape between each coat or between the lime prep coat? Or can I leave the tape on from start to finish?
If it’s stone you should’nt have to. That’s assuming it’s unfinished. But mineral primer wouldn’t hurt For more specifics I’d reach out to the manufacturer directly
Hey Josh, if I have a light grey-blue wall and do this lime wash will it cover the grey-bleu? It’s a super light wall color. Wondering if I have to paint my wall white first before lime washing it?
It’s hard to say without actually seeing the wall. But either way you are going to have to prepare the walls before you start. Most lime primers that I’ve seen come in white anyway (check out my second video to learn more about this - it’s an even better way to prepare your walls), but otherwise if you choose to do an acrylic based primer I would just choose white. Better to be safe than sorry. Hope that helps!
Any suggestions after we applied lime wash a previous dry wall repair is bleeding through any suggestions? 2 coats of latex primer was applied before lime wash
Hello, I have a wall painted in orange, I wanted to know if I need to paint beforehand with a color similar to the tone that I am going to use with Linewash, or if it can just be covered without placing anything underneath. Thank you
Hi there! You’ll definitely have to prep your walls. I recommend 2-3 coats of lime primer before starting to limewash. If you haven’t watched my second limewash video it goes over a ton of peoples questions. I’ve learned a lot since first starting, you should check it out! Hope that helps!
Hey there! In order to get the classic look, you would want to use a flat surface. However, limewash can be used on many different types of surfaces and should work on a textured wall. The pigment would show, but the brush strokes may not be visible in the way you want it them be. Hope that helps!
Can limewash paint be used to cover up cement cinder block walls? If I put a thick layer of limewash paint would it be thick enough to fill in the indentation of the cinder blocks so that there is more even/smooth finish?
Limewash should be able to be used over concrete, however it is not thick enough like a plaster to get into the holes and make it smooth. Maybe you should try something like venetian plaster or Roman clay that has more of a body to it and could probably better fill in the holes and give a similar textured look. Hope that helps!
Technically, yes! But I’d say if you’re looking for a certain color to just buy it ready-made. Companies offer limewash in a crazy amount of colors. Or you can Google “DIY limewash” and it’ll walk you through the steps and you can add in your own pigment that way. For more general info and FAQs, check up my latest upload. I go through a ton of peoples most frequently asked questions. Could be helpful!
Thanks Josh. I didn’t know it came in lots of colours. I’m in Canada and will try to find a source here as I have a wall crying out for this treatment.
They are actually pretty similar and can give a similar look. Venetian plaster is a type of plaster that usually has lime in it as well, but it’s applied with a trowel instead of a brush. The finished look is often similar, giving a subtle texture. However my understanding is that Venetian plaster offers more flexibility: it can be left matte to look like stone or sealed with a high gloss wax to look more like marble. So definitely have to consider the end result look you’re going for. Where you want to apply it may determine which you need. For example, you’d need limewash to give a translucent painted look over a brick fireplace, and Venetian plaster wouldn’t be suitable. Hope that helps!
Hello Josh! I so hope that you are still checking your comments. Your tutorial has been SO helpful. The Romabio site says you can't use it on drywall so I'm so glad to know it takes a coat of acrylic paint to use it indoors on drywall. I am wondering if a sealant is necessary on top? Is Limewash susceptible to runs and scuffs? I have Marrakech walls from Pure and Original in one of my rooms and it scuffs and runs SO easily :(

@@joshmrivera You are so generous thank you for taking the time to point me in the right direction even though you've been asked a similar question so many times. Super super helpful thank you Josh!
I'd like to know if it comes off when you rub against it, if it's not too much trouble? I love the idea of having a metal bedframe, and I wonder if the pillows touching the wall would damage both or if it'll work.
It should definitely not rub off when you touch the wall, as long as your walls are properly prepped. If you’re concerned with any scratches or damage, your best bet is to get a clear sealer to put on after the limewash. You can google “limewash sealer” and there are some companies that sell it. Hope that helps!
Excellent learning video. You're really detail in explaining and showing the steps in different angle and view throughout the process. I find it 100% helpful and practical. Thanks!
I noticed that the Bauwerks Limewash is a lot more liquid. Can this brand work if more water is added? I live in a older home with monterrey textured finish that has been painted many times with latex paint. I will need to PVA prime the walls and ceiling prior to application? Also do you think I can I tint this with powdered oxide pigments used in fresco painting? This is the only video I have found using this brand on drywall. Thanks
Hey, sorry I wish I could help but I’m not sure how to answer. Bauwerk does seem to come with a lot of liquid but the can is meant to be mixed to thicken the mixture. Priming on walls like yours may call for different prep work. You should look into mineral based primer. Bauwerk also sells it For pigments, if it’s limewash I would just buy it in the color your looking for. There are ways to add pigment yourself but I’m not familiar with it
hi josh! i have a question. any tips for removing limewash paint that i accidentally painted on wood skirtings? didn't do the taping up of edges very well.
You can try a light sand with high grit paper. Or honestly just scratching it with your finger. If the skirt kings were not prepped, the limewash won’t have a tight hold on it and it shouldn’t be too hard to remove. That being said, worse case scenario the base boards unfortunately may just need a touch up
Hi Josh, Thank you for this video. Quick question for you. The primer that you originally had linked is no longer available at The Home Depot. Is there another brand that you would recommend or can I use any acrylic primer?
wow you were super helpful and detailed more than the actual brands who sell limewash. so that for that beyond thank you

Good luck!!
Amazing! Bauwerk doesn't have the exact color I want. Could I add acrylic paint to limewash to get my color?
No you’d have to look up pigments that you can add to limewash, acrylic paint won’t do it unfortunately
Hey Josh, so you think you could apply a wax like they do with plaster and then use a buffer to shine it?
My guess would be yes, but I’m not too familiar with that. Sorry! Personally, I would contact a limewash company directly for clarification on that.
thanks this so much helpful. as i want to ask any step of old wall that already paint make like this one??
Sounds like you just need to prime/patch up the walls then you can limewash. If you have more questions check out my second limewash video before starting 👍🏼
thanks mate, this so helpfull i will check your video.
Awesome! I hope it answers all your questions!
I did it! It was a little more tedious because of textured walls but your video was so helpful. Thanks for the info.
Glad to hear it!! 🥳
Great instructions! Can the lime wash be coloured?
I wanna try and use this texhnique on my livingroom- for peachy walls. I hope it turns out beautiful🧡
Good luck!
Haha
But no that will not ruin your walls.
Hi! Looks great! Do you think this would look ok on a slightly textured wall??😊
Hello from Florence, Italy. Very useful and clear. Thank you!
Thanks for this informational video! You make it look so easy. Is that color nube grey?
Thank you bro..this video is very usefull for me.I will start a new site..and there use this lime wash paint.thank you so much.this will very usefull.
Thanks! Can you custom paint colors or are they all premixed?
You can DIY your own limewash and add pigment in yourself. Just do a quick Google search and you should be able to find the materials you’ll need. Good luck!
How exciting and wonderful. Just what I’ve been wishing I knew.....Thought it could only be achieved painting on plaster, and didn’t know how AND didn’t have plaster walls anymore, lol! I’m so excited about possibilities!
Aw I’m so glad to hear! 😁
Great tutorial - love the look - would have liked to see it with furniture, decor, etc
Thanks!
Thanks for answering
Debbie
Great video! Do I need to use primer on an interior stone hearth?
If it’s stone you should’nt have to. That’s assuming it’s unfinished. But mineral primer wouldn’t hurt
For more specifics I’d reach out to the manufacturer directly
Thank you, Josh! This looks great and very simple to do!
Nice tutorial, I noticed you have lots more videos about this process so I subscribed!
Any suggestions after we applied lime wash a previous dry wall repair is bleeding through any suggestions? 2 coats of latex primer was applied before lime wash
What’s the best cleaner or cleaning method especially if you limewashed your kitchen. We have a shower to clean n maintain!
very informational! also wanted to mention your skin is so beautiful!
I love your video, thank you for all this great information. Of the Lime Wash product, you used Is there one you prefer more than another?
So far Bauwerk is my fave that I’ve used 😁
Hello, I have a wall painted in orange, I wanted to know if I need to paint beforehand with a color similar to the tone that I am going to use with Linewash, or if it can just be covered without placing anything underneath. Thank you
Hi there! You’ll definitely have to prep your walls. I recommend 2-3 coats of lime primer before starting to limewash. If you haven’t watched my second limewash video it goes over a ton of peoples questions. I’ve learned a lot since first starting, you should check it out!
Hope that helps!
Can you do lime wash on a textured (knock down) wall? I would hate to have to make it flat first! Thanks for the video.
Hey there! In order to get the classic look, you would want to use a flat surface. However, limewash can be used on many different types of surfaces and should work on a textured wall. The pigment would show, but the brush strokes may not be visible in the way you want it them be. Hope that helps!
@@joshmrivera thank you for the quick reply & info! I'll try it inside a closet first to see the results before doing the big, accent wall!
Sounds like a great idea! Good luck 🥰
Josh, do you know if this could be repainted with regular drywall paint if needed?
I plan on doing this in my room after I skim coat the walls. Can I do this over the joint compound/mud with out priming it first?
Hopefully you checked my second limewash video? I recommend using a mineral or lime primer. I’m not sure if you can get away without priming
Thank you for all the info!!! really good advice. I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. It was very clear.
Thank you!! I’m working on a follow-up Frequently asked questions video, so stay tuned for more!
Great video. Very helpful. I’m doing this!
Really helpful video thanks! Could you use two different colours eg two greens to create a more ethnic wall look? Thanks
Great video well explained. Can you add a pigment to the lime wash?
Technically, yes! But I’d say if you’re looking for a certain color to just buy it ready-made. Companies offer limewash in a crazy amount of colors. Or you can Google “DIY limewash” and it’ll walk you through the steps and you can add in your own pigment that way. For more general info and FAQs, check up my latest upload. I go through a ton of peoples most frequently asked questions. Could be helpful!
Thanks Josh. I didn’t know it came in lots of colours. I’m in Canada and will try to find a source here as I have a wall crying out for this treatment.
Haha good luck on your search! I’m sure you’ll be able to find it. I talk about a couple suppliers in the other video too
Love it!
How does Venetian plaster work? Similar or tot diff?
Thanks for your great tutorial Josh.
So basically it would be insane to do anything more than an accent wall. So beautiful!
No way! I did my whole bedroom! Check out part 2 to this video 😁
Was hoping to see you add limewash sealer.
Great tips. Thank you Josh
Thanks!
I have Marrakech walls from Pure and Original in one of my rooms and it scuffs and runs SO easily :(
Thanks for your comment! I’m going to point you towards another video I made; it is a follow up to this that goes through a ton of frequently asked questions. I talk about how to prepare your walls and also about sealing the walls. Definitely check it out and let me know if you have any more questions! You can find the video here: ruclips.net/video/gJGUuou-QKM/видео.html
@@joshmrivera You are so generous thank you for taking the time to point me in the right direction even though you've been asked a similar question so many times. Super super helpful thank you Josh!
It’s my pleasure! I’m glad to help and share what I’m learning 🥰
This is a very helpful. Do you think it would look okay on textured walls?
I always recommend applying limewash to flat walls. Otherwise it’s not gonna yield the classic limewash look
Bauwerk also sells it
For pigments, if it’s limewash I would just buy it in the color your looking for.
That being said, worse case scenario the base boards unfortunately may just need a touch up
Loooved this! Gave me so many’s tips!! What color did you use?
Hi Josh,
Thank you for this video. Quick question for you. The primer that you originally had linked is no longer available at The Home Depot. Is there another brand that you would recommend or can I use any acrylic primer?
