  • I have had loads of questions about these already even though they have only been out for a few days, so I thought it would be good to make a video about fitting the sound to it.
If you need a decoder for your model you can find it here www.roads-and-...
The EM1 speaker is available separately here www.roads-and-...

Superb job. I noted you've also run a Heljan class 28 how did you overcome the speaker fitting on that loco as inside it there appears to be very wiggle room for a speaker in comparison to the Class 45. Any shared toughts would be most appreciated.

Apologies for my previous posting (14mins ago). I've just re-read your Class 28 posting in which you identify both the speaker type and location fitted which is noted with interest and thanks. I'll have a strong word with myself for not noting it earlier!

I had a wee laugh to myself when you suggested melting the sides of the EM1 with the soldering iron, as that was my first thought as well. Maybe not the most conventional or pretty, but it gets the job done😄😁

It doesnt leave as much of a hole in the enclosure as grinding it away would either

Handy info on the EM1 fitting. I was expecting a bit of chamfering being needed to the top edges but if it's just a bit of rebating the sides to clear then thats easy enough. I'm sorely tempted to parallel a pair of 20x20s and series that combo with the EM1 as I have in my class 58s, just need Medusa to turn up from Kernow...

It should be possible, I prefer the bassy sound of the EM1 though, you lose some of that when you start adding other speakers

@@roadsandrails I generally agree, though some prototypes lend themselves to a bit more high range, especially EE machines...I know the Peaks are Derby, not EE before anyone says anything by the way! Its more a point that where a distinct turbo whine exists an EM1 alone isn't always the best fit although that can sometimes be down to the way the original recording was achieved on a locomotive not being worked hard. It is nice to see models where getting an EM1 into them isn't a small scale machining job on the chassis block and hatchet job on the speaker enclosure.

Hi Richard, great video, I’m thinking of getting a class Heljan class 45, are they any good, what’s your honest opinion? Also the Moonstone blue Sierra whale tail cosworth on your layout, do you sell it, or can you point me in the right direction on getting one along with the other Ford RS range.

Yeah I really like mine, done quite a few installs on them too and they have all been good. The Sierra is 1:87, they are more expensive than you would think so I dont sell them, its made by either brekina or PCX, I think they are both the same brand anyway

I might be wrong but i thought you had to wire another speaker with an em1 because it doesnt draw enough power or something along them lines

One of the retailers used to say that but I think the spec of the speaker has changed slightly, I’ve never had an issue
