do yall realize mariah carey has belted within the same range in every album? they all range around A5, which is the same A5 she has belted since her first album, the range is the same, she has just gotten older and she wont have the same flexibility.
People keep forgetting she has nodules that’s a big factor . She still has a beautiful tone like you said ❤. Mariah when her nerves are up it plays a factor when she’s Confident she kills it .
i remember when i first started diving deep into mariah's discography and how shocked i was that she sounded so different across her albums 😅 i guess the debut and emotions are very similar, music box was very classical and refined, daydream was noticeably much lighter and girlier, butterfly is an interesting mix of music box and daydream for me (the studio vocals), rainbow was so warm and raspy
I think the biggest issue for Mariah by the critics is that her voice is so great and her runs are fantastic that they have huge expectations for her to maintain that. Along the way, they forgot the musicality that comes with her runs and her singing and songwriting. They just think she is just the voice. Hence, she is deemed as overrated and did not get the same amount of respect as she should have. And now that her voice is a bit different and style changed, they once again hit at her saying she’s just nothing without her prime voice. Sad case really. Thank goodness for lambs who truly appreciate every aspect of hers, seeing her as an great musician than just the voice.
As a singer myself I understand how I can sing a low note and push my lips out and it sounds super low, Or I can sing the same exact note with a relaxed mouth and it doesn't seem nearly as low even though it's the exact same note. To the listener it has an illusion of being lower or higher depending you position your mouth... I think sometimes critics and listeners don't take into consideration the shape of the mouth, and the depth or brightness the note has, Because that can Influence your brain to think it is higher or lower when it's actually the same note.
Mariah actually did NOT tour much in the 90's. They were short lived and the label wanted her making cds. She did 3 taped for TV concerts. She put out a new album nearly every year. What people seem to forget is that she was writing and producing the songs too - which also requires singing and she'd remake songs for remixes. Then, make songs for other artists as well. By, '97 she was also running Crave Records.
I will say that during the late 90s and very early 2000s (97-2001), she was at her absolute most stressed. She just divorced an abusive, controlling husband that she married in 93, and was dealing with bipolar disorder related mania on top of the stress of being a world famous musician. She’s gone on record saying she would maybe get 2-3 hours of sleep during the late 90s, and by the time the 2000s rolled around, she wouldn’t sleep for days. This all happened while performing extensive world tours and working non stop. Then she got institutionalized in 2001 after not sleeping for days at a time, hallucinating from lack of sleep, extreme paranoia setting in, being overworked by her new label during the Glitter era, etc. She was consistently tired and exhausted, while also being extremely manic for 5 straight years. She went through SO so much during that time that it’s a wonder she managed to even do all the things she did without DYING from the exhaustion, let alone having a singing voice at all.
I feel like she’s doing speech level singing more as she’s doing Pop as well as using more twang when belting and nasality in her mids. But Daydream going back to her debut (basically the first part of Queen’s tone evolution videos that you reacted to) a lot of people point out that she was doing some of the Bel Canto techniques because her mom being an Opera singer (and no SLS for Opera) and Mariah’s first vocal coach when she was little so I could see why Mariah was having a lot of technical tools in her vocal bag.
30:01 yes thank you I'm so done with lambs bringing Mariah down... they call me delusional when i say that.. but I know it hurts Mariah to see people being "disappointed" by her voice now
i have watched many reviews on the Rolling stones list of the best singers and people seam to be 50/50 about Mariah being in the top 5. For me she is top 3
Technique-wise (in terms of non-operatic music), she's with Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Lara Fabian, SoHyang, Whitney Houston & Céline Dion, behind Barbra Streisand, Lisa Fischer & Rachelle Ferrell. I'm not sure but I believe Minnie Riperton also belongs to this league. Aretha Franklin is the absolute top vocalist to many people, even Mariah Carey included. Influence-wise, I agree, but she's not that of absolute technical supremacy. She is definitely an icon to a generation though.
@@popland1977 Unfortunately not. I'm also aware that her vocal support was inconsistent even in her prime. Perhaps, that's due to her unwillingness to follow certain vocal rules (as she repeatedly claims she doesn't like singing opera). I think she belongs to the tier for her legendary vocal versatility: seamless transition, extreme agility, wide range, top belts & of course the whistle which have deafened so many people who forget other stuff she navigate.
Her singing is very straining to the vocal chords because she likes to create these intentional vocal breaks or singing through those clicks, that puts the vocal chords in alot of pressure and overtime, damages the voice.

Mariah’s voice is 100 percent different than it was at the beginning. A huge difference. She lost the smoothness and sounds more chip munky. Her voice sometimes sounds fried. You can hear the huge difference if you listen to her first recording of Close my eyes ( I think Is on butterfly album ) and when she re recorded it maybe a year or two ago ? That smoothness she use to have is gone. I noticed a huge vocal change when I heard her sing butterfly on Oprah. I love Mariah. Always have. I have all of her albums , been to a ton of her shows to see her live including her Xmas tour she just completed but the difference is substantial. You gave other singers like usher and Christina Aguilera who have been out as long doesn’t have NEAR the difference in their voices. Usher actually sounds almost exactly like he did when he was 20. Kelly Clarkson voice has changed but not NEAR as much as Mariah’s either. I am not sure if this huge vocal change is due to her vocal nodules or just over singing and not properly taking care of those vocal cords ? Mariah has always been my fav singer and song writer but her voice has a significant change to it
What he's not saying is that Mariah is not a trained singer, because of her nodules she should have lowered the keys in a lot of those songs. Her voice would have lasted better in the long run. She needed a vocal coach out the gate.
I often compare Mariah Carey's voice at age 50 to Cleo Laine's voice at age 50. Cleo Laine is a British singer of jazz/standards, popular music, and showtunes, born in 1927. She is also a light skinned biracial woman of black/white heritage who looks like she could be Mariah Carey's grandmother. In her prime she had a vocal range of approximately 4.1/2 octaves. In 1977 Cleo released a live album "Return To Carnegie" in which she hits the highest note I have ever heard her hit, and rich and resonant low notes. She proves that if you develop a multi-octave range and take care of your voice properly, you can access that range well into your middle age.
Her nodules got worse as she aged and singing overtime, not getting enough sleep, she even said there was a time where she's lucky if she had 3hrs of sleep. drinking etc. People forgot that she's human bec of her perfection in the 90s
