I actually remember watching channel 9 in Chicago when this happened. It was scary as shit . I was in the 6th grade. Amazing to this day that it's still a mystery as to who was behind it.
The guy who engineered it was a former television broadcaster, he was at the time struggling with debt (I am pretty sure). He died a couple years back.
Actually I've recently discovered that he did not say "I Stole CBS" ... but rather "I Still See the X" ... it's a reference to the last episode of Clutch Cargo, which is the little theme he was humming.
Mark Rodriguez just check what i said previously...i know already. I'm french canadian, and "Clutch Cargo" never played in french here, so i didn't even had a clue he was saying this until he pointed it out, many many months before you decided to type this message...
It was much easier to get away with it back then because of signals being analog also I think the statue of limitation for hijacking a broadcast is around seven years or at least back then it was so in the 90s everyone involved with it could have revealed that they did it and they couldn't be arrested the only thing that probably would have happened is being sued by the two stations they hijacked and while I do wish they would reveal themselves at the same time them keeping the mystery alive for so long is why it's the most famous broadcast hijack of all time
@isolateddirectorofficial Somebody wrote that they think they knew who the person was based on his speech patterns and mannerism. And at that time, there were very few people who knew how to hack into broadcast signals. But I don't think the person was ever officially identified.
That's the thing. No one knows who he (or any of the other people there during the hijack) was so he could have been caught for something completely unrelated and no one knew.
I'm _super_ glad that I wasn't born when this happened. That was terrifying to watch and it's broad daylight. Imagine seeing this late at night when it's dark and you're alone and there's no internet so you can't message people and share your trauma with others who just saw it.
LesserPlanes Yes, that's better than nothing, I guess. So if we lived back then, we'd probably be saying "Man, it would suck so much if we didn't have phones and I had to go through this on my own! Thank goodness!"
I keep wondering who he was too! He was ahead of his time lol. I just want an annoying celebrity playing in half time and another him or himself appears and says, "I'm back." And he goes on until the super bowl is supposed to end!
***** Nah, how about when Taylor Swift or some other skrub takes the stage, he shows up. He leaves after halftime tho, because I want to see how the game ends.
Thanks for sharing this! And thanks for giving subtitles! It's a lot funnier when you can understand him. But, I believe, he says "I still see the X" instead of "I stole CBS". Given that he was singing the "Clutch Cargo" theme right before, and "Seeing the X" refers to the last episode of the show. The Wikipedia page on this incident mentions this as well. Regardless, This video is awesome. It's fun to see what people could do back when televisions had such limited technology, that they were child's play to mess around with.
And thus a legend was born. Still unknown to this day who it was or how they did it, but it certainly was a piece of art, on hacking, on trolling and on generally doing an awesome stunt for the sake of just doing it. No financial interest, no political agenda, no "message" they needed to get out. Just doing it for the sake of doing it because we can. What a legend.
So many people saying this scared them, shocked them, and even HORRIFIED them, while I'm sitting here laughing my ass off at this because it's just funny that out of all the things they could've shown on thousands of screens in chicago, they played this.
imagine its 1987 and youre laying in bed as a child. its late at night and you cant fall asleep so you turn on the low-quality television in your bedroom. Youre watching the show that was on (in this video) and you just got interested in it. then that pops up, and after, you cant fall asleep that night.
Chicago seriously needs to build a monument to this anonymous hero. Amazing that the mastermind(s) still hasn't come forward to take credit for this or explain what they were thinking. Just makes it all the more mysterious and memorable.
not gonna lie, first time watching this i didnt know it was a swatter at first (it was sideways) so i thought that thing was going up the ass on live tv i let out an oh then laughed when it started spanking.
By placing his or her own dish antenna between the transmitter tower, the hacker could have effectively interrupted the original signal. They wouldn’t even have needed expensive equipment, just good timing and positioning.
The fact that this happened in 1987 makes it even cooler by far. Because it would take a hell lot of power and experience to do something like this at the time.
