I just picked up a 1982 achilles st-5 hypalon dinghy, and I have to ask did yours smell extremely strong like plastic/hypalon? If i even touch the boat it leaves a strong odor on your hand, so far i have scrubbed it down twice with dish soap/bleach and dish soap/30% vinegar. The vinegar seems to help the most. Thanks!
No, I can't say that was the case with this one. Similar vintage, too. Was yours exposed to the sunlight often? I suspect perhaps UV damage to the hypalon... This Avon was always kept in its bag in a locker when not inflated, so didn't see much sun.
Sorry, I have been a terrible RUclipsr lately. Sorry for the late reply. We have been using that dinghy steadily since I patched it and "painted" it with Flex Seal, and it has been holding up great! The Flex Seal hasn't peeled up, hasn't cracked, hasn't dis-colored... it simply works great on hypalon.
Hi, I'm thinking about doing this to mine too but wondered, when it cured did it impact the pliability of the hypalon? Did you end up deflating and folding the boat up after you painted? I know the hypalon can be folded up in its original state but if you painted with this product, would it harden the surface and cause crazing or little cracks to paint surface when it gets folded up?
Great question! No, no cracking. This stuff remains very pliable, like a rubber coating. It thickens the material somewhat, so I guess you can say it doesn't fold quite as well as bare hypalon... but no, it is not nearly stiff enough to create a problem.
I sanded the areas that I "painted" very very lightly just to scuff the surface and remove any loose paint (the old lettering). The material stuck very well, and still looks good today!
I suppose we should have done a close-up inspection of the boat after the paint cured. Absolutely. But for some reason we just... didn't. So, I included a quick clip in the end of the boat in use with the paint on it. Where do you sell real estate, Byron?

So I'm just south of you in Chas, SC with the same rib and year curious how that flex seal is holding up. Thx!

I’ve heard that the flex seal doesn’t cure completely… did you run into this issue?
No, no problem at all like that. It cured fairly quickly and completely.
No primer befor adding the coating?
Nope, no primer was necessary. The coating sticks very well directly to the hypalon.
Did you sand the entire boat before applying?
I sanded the areas that I "painted" very very lightly just to scuff the surface and remove any loose paint (the old lettering). The material stuck very well, and still looks good today!
Dude you didn’t show the finished result of painting the boat.
