Miss Chris sitting down with amazing artists and designers like this. I know Chris has different goals now but I will always appreciate the insight he brings to talks like this.
Two absolute powerhouses. I've listened to hours of the collective podcast, but Ash still surprises me with how clear and concise he can convey his thoughts and ideas. And Chris Do is just plain excellent.
"A thousand days of training to develop, ten thousand days of training to polish." - Miyamoto Musashi I am doing my best to have that patience and perseverance while controlling my perfectionism and anxiety. Training is not easy, but it's totally worth it. Thank you The Futur, this content is amazing.
loved this episode, Liked what Ash said about the athlete's mentality, recently I watched Diana Nyad story, who swim from Cuba to Florida at the age of 63, It amazed me how much she practices each day, she succeeded at something she fails at her twenties . its never too late .
Looking forward to see Ash coming back , he has a great insight into what it means to be an artist and the mind set needed to become one. Awesome episode. thanks
So I'm getting back into creative work after 10 years away, and friend got me onto the Collective Podcast which has been immensely inspiring and informative. Then through my RUclips travels in watching design tips etc I come across The Futur channel, which has been just as helpful. Now the circle is complete by getting to watch Ash on Chris' show. Keep up the great work guys, your commitment to bringing your passion and knowledge to others is much appreciated!
Omg, I found Ash Thorp`s podcast two years ago, an amazing voice and interesting content and just now realized that this is the same person, because of the voice. Thanks for the episode The Futur! Chris and Ash are a great team, the conversation is flowing.
Sry to comment twice, but my mind was blown by hearing that people were hating on the Scaffolding concept you guys presented. I come from the skateboarding world as well, and 7 out 10 people trying to learn will try and throw kickflips before even having solid ollies, or they will walk down a hill or plow through sneaker soles because they haven't learned how to control speed through sliding and carving. The basics work and they are actually _fun af!_ This is analogous with design and all kinds of endevour.
Please keep it going! Karate kid is a great metaphor. Not only is learning hard, it's also faith based and very frustrating before you achieve. Indeed, i think the frustration of trial and error, using the tools before you understand the art (paint the fence! ) is a valuable part of the learning. This is why hacks are hacks and mastery is mastery IMHO
Two of my favorites in the field combining forces, love it. Also it was Elizabeth Taylor that put "The King of Pop" in our collective minds back in the 80s.
This was awesome. His thoughts on the future of motion are crazy, this is coming from someone in the trenches. GOLD. Very interesting insight on his process. Hope to hear more, not on a day to day, but on an organizational standpoint of large projects and how to keep things original. Chris, have you thought about putting together a Comic Con panel?
Wicked one! Really great hearing from your guests, and I think it's so great that you know them and have conversations with them especially when they team up with you guys, looking forward to the it. People like David Carson and Kyle Cooper are indeed motivating and if I may, pretty much all the people you guys bring on the show are inspiring. I believe in following the best so one day you can lead like the best, you either follow great people or strive to be a great leader through your life. Chris Do became an instant inspiration for me, I found The Futur shows through my search for better information on business and creative processes, so yea know what you want and stay focused you will eventually get what you want. To the gallows with the chart haters lol...Wile anyone capable can do many things, I fail to see how anyone can become a master at something without understanding the foundations and tools. Many wish to be innovative but they don't seem to understand in order to change something you need to understand it's foundation. I came in on the live show a bit late, work and all that...so I just re-watched it all, really great.
I would love to see Ash's daily routine (practice routines also). Its an extra bit of info that can potentially help those of us with less structure to adopt and apply to our own routine. This was an awesome episode. Thanks. Its great to see two giants collaborating. Im excited to see what else comes from this. btw. that terrible movie with the cult following is "The Room"
3 things you are always gonna hear from Ash Thorp (use to be 4). Ridley Scott, Jiu Jitsu, Grid System. The missing one is the book Eat that Frog. Well disciplined guy. Involved in great work. I miss the Collective Podcast but I like Learnsquared.
Great conversation! From what I saw as a response to the "Road to mastery" post wasn't as negative a reaction as it may be percieved. There appeared to be a misunderstanding of the intended message rather than an absolute disagreement. The challenge I believe many were hung up on was the language dictating a path rather than a support system of knowledge. That said you are an influencer so bringing out the good, bad and ugly in our career challenges is something I, among others, appreciate. It will absolutely get some heat at times, but the open forum is needed. Thanks for encouraging a great industry discussion and continuing the talk with Ash.
Nothing wrong with ruffling feathers. The topic of teaching people how to make a living doing what we do is an important set of lessons so few ever learn. It's worth such a passionate conversation.
This was awesome, thank you...congratulations to Y'all it seemed a clusterf#$% to have so many things connected at the same time, and such a rich content... standing ovation! ; )
Where should I start... maybe tech basics first. It was quite smooth video, questions from zoom were short, fast and on point, so in 1+ hour I could feel the difference. It's easier to think and process the knowledge that you give, when those little things are done right, having in mind the RAW format of course (I love it). Also the topic was important to me personally and I could refer this to younger designers that I try to inspire and teach. The guest co-host format was really cool and you guys are made for each other! I love the conversation that Chris usually has with the studio crew but adding Ash took it to the next level!
it is! start now so you can experiment with the audience while it's still growing. often, you hear that smaller conferences (in the hundreds) can be better in some ways, like allowing for more personal interactions with speakers etc.
The story of Van Gogh is not a story about subjectivity of art. He was the guy who had calling, learnt his tools, did his 10000 hours, worked through principles which nobody taught him and there was no internet, he did his mastery and his style but in the end he battled too many demons including poverty and sickness. We as artists pay tribute to that guy, as we all know that in any other circumstances we could have been him. If you compare him to a soldier, he is the one who had been brave and got shot. He did not witnessed victory with his own eyes.
Yes to monthly calls with Ash! Totally on-board with his approach to creativity-having multiple projects to push through mental blocks, using projects to work on your weaknesses, reverse engineering your vision. Great stuff. And @1:08:20 when Arun was asking his question, love how Chris was mentally and physically loosening up to judo-throw an answer!
Does chris have specific themes / directions specific to people that he interviews? How does he steer the conversation to cover those topics? Every video is such a treasure
Yo - Just watched and listened to the podcast. Just realized that I'm 100% sure that I took classes with Ash at Palomar College like, 12 years ago! Small world.

you don't need a resume, diploma to get a job in the creative industry. your portfolio is your ticket in. i suspect if it's good enough, you should be able to get your foot in the door. look at companies where your skill and style fit the best. build up a relationship with them. ask for a critique. learn about how they work and who makes the decisions.

the pyramid thing. for me, i think, u can stick to the original one. like u relate it to the Karate Kid movie i cn also relate it to my sport(sportclimbing). we follow a pyramid that the end goal is also mastery :) i followed the fb comment about that, and i dont think we can teach beginners principles on their first days. let them enjoy the tools an techniques, till they become enough familiar with the program. then we teach principles. principles first can get u sooo bored cz u cant express it with the available tools. js my point of view though. great episode! :) this shd be monthly. Ash is wicked!! and he loves TOOL too. coool!
A cool episode would include showing bad execution vs good execution, for similar product/category. Compare and contrast, open discussion. Lead up to really bad vs really good. Maybe also show sales and profit boost. Show what looks like poor execution but 300% rise in profits vs nice execution and 5% rise in profits. Look for audience responses. Call it The Execution Game, like The Newlywed Game. Name a strange place that the two of you had sex? Uh...well...
The strangest thing is that passion in crap makes crap lionized. All the worst of the worst in any genre of creativity leaves a cult following or impact on society. Be passionate. As Chris said...there are many flavors of ice cream everyone has their taste: you will find a niche or audience.
Your story as a child trying to earn money to buy you own skateboard is pretty similar to mine and it inspired me to keep moving forward and be similar to your current story. 😁
Awesome content but the host needs to stop being so high and mighty over everyone. It's so cringey and really takes away from the show. Even Ash very apparently feels the awkwardness.
Friends can absolutely feel when their friend is being awkward and it shows in his body language very clearly. Public shaming isn't a good way to teach people behavior.
Miss Chris sitting down with amazing artists and designers like this. I know Chris has different goals now but I will always appreciate the insight he brings to talks like this.
Thank you
Ash is one of the most amazing humans and artists on the planet. Honest, centred and clear about his vectors.
Two absolute powerhouses. I've listened to hours of the collective podcast, but Ash still surprises me with how clear and concise he can convey his thoughts and ideas. And Chris Do is just plain excellent.

Wow! This channel is evolving into a Major Presence in the Industry!
we just getting started. stick around.
Oh man, listening to these old ones during a late work session is pure gold to my ears. So much wisdom on this one it's insane.
Looking forward to see Ash coming back , he has a great insight into what it means to be an artist and the mind set needed to become one. Awesome episode. thanks
Vik Servin agreed.
You are such a strong point of reference and a reason to celebrate. Agreeing and disagreeing is as important as process alone is. Awesome. And thanks.

it was real fun having him on.
Danny , Ash & Gmunk - masters who always inspired me - immense gratitude & respect
elysiumcore we got to get Gmunk on the show. That will complete the trifecta for ya.
Gmunk's design kungfu is strong. I don't get starstruck but wow.
Ash's humbleness is just... wow. Much respect.
Draplin, Thorp, who's next????
Best channel on earth. It became a MUST in my life and as teacher I recommend it in every class I'm in.
thanks Emo!
I'm more into Sagmeister haha
How about G-Munk?

nate of the south glad to hear that story resonated.

thanks for the source.
Ash Thorp is my spirit animal.
Ash thorp was a visual beast, he create a fresh exploration create new thing , he probably was the Legend of motion graphic
Big fan of Ash from the concept art/design world. champion style
Ash is great and very articulate, thanks again for the great content from everyone involved.
he's one smart dude.
This was awesome. His thoughts on the future of motion are crazy, this is coming from someone in the trenches. GOLD.

challenge accepted

[Types in collective podcast] well well, Chris Do was the last interview. awesome
Great conversation!

One by one, viewing all of your videos. LIFE changing! Taking action and changing my ways! No prisoners! (hahaha) Thank you!
good job! glad to be part of your journey.
Interesting how many times Carson came up and now he has an awesome Masterclass course.
This was awesome, thank you...congratulations to Y'all it seemed a clusterf#$% to have so many things connected at the same time, and such a rich content... standing ovation! ; )
i thoroughly enjoy these videos. i listen while i work.
Super art, high level show gr8, gr8 advice!
One of the best episodes for me! Thanks!

Solutions present themselves in a natural way.

Dziobek I personal love his work. Ash and I disagreed. It is tragic his demons consumed him before he was able to see success.
Yes to monthly calls with Ash! Totally on-board with his approach to creativity-having multiple projects to push through mental blocks, using projects to work on your weaknesses, reverse engineering your vision. Great stuff.
And @1:08:20 when Arun was asking his question, love how Chris was mentally and physically loosening up to judo-throw an answer!
you caught that!
Haha yeah man. When you've been learning from a person as awesome as yourself for two years I guess we notice these things!
What a "dynamic duo"....I want more!!!
more on the way.
Amazing quality stuff, thank you so much @the Futur
thanks
Technical artists are some of the heroes of production
This was awesome. Thanks guys. Keep them coming!!
David Saucedo we certainly will.
No worries, I appreciate what you guys are offering us as young designers.
I don't have the fear of exposure anymore 😎
get out there.
More of this!! Big up guys!
This is a power channel !
Rob Phyton power to the Learner

Thank you so much and I really do love it :)
The Futur is what we make it!
Very cool video, thanks !
Ash Thorp is the GOAT
Does chris have specific themes / directions specific to people that he interviews? How does he steer the conversation to cover those topics? Every video is such a treasure
I don’t. I just stay present to the moment. I ask some warm up questions and then we flow
YES !
DAILY PROLIFIC PLANNER !!!
GIFF MOAR ASH THORP.
sure.
when is our Futur and Learn Square workshop happening?
this is brilliant! for sure want more of these! :D specially when master Ash is in there xD hehehe!
Yo - Just watched and listened to the podcast. Just realized that I'm 100% sure that I took classes with Ash at Palomar College like, 12 years ago! Small world.
Steve Raboin indeed.
Just confirmed with Chris Polentz - now my head hurts.
My problem right now is that I am about to finish design school, have no money, and I'm not quite there yet in terms of skill to get any sort of job that I'm aware of. Nowhere near my town is there any sort of design internships available, and I don't want to start working as a dish washer or something full time just to be able to pay rent, cause that feels like such a HUGE waste of my time to practice and a waste of what skills I do have. I would LOVE to be able to just grind, cause I know where I want to be and how to get there, except I need some sort of job related to what I want to do with my life just so I don't end up killing myself from all the monotony and boredom my environment and the people around me all filling me with.

This is was Awesome Chris keep it coming
thanks. will do.
What advice would you give to designers who did not go to art school or dropped school and began working straight at a design firm? They are self learnt with the help of either tutors or online tutorials. All they have is skill and experience but no college degree and qualification. Would love to hear Chris's suggestion on how to get a job for such a self taught designer. Is portfolio the only way to convince their employer about their true potential or is there any other way of getting hired?
you don't need a resume, diploma to get a job in the creative industry. your portfolio is your ticket in. i suspect if it's good enough, you should be able to get your foot in the door. look at companies where your skill and style fit the best. build up a relationship with them. ask for a critique. learn about how they work and who makes the decisions.
The Futur thank you so much for the reply 😁😁😁
you bet.
Wish the videos had higher volume....
omg, ive been under a rock for quite some time
Anyway we can get the audio versions of these talks? Would love to listen to these on commute
podcast w/ ash drops next week.
49:10 maybe The Room (2003) aka "The Citizen Kane of Bad Movies"
Great show 👌🏾, but I can't save Offline 😔
Mutalifhi Tshilande sorry.
Chris, how would you pivot in the design industry as automation kicks in and starts to take more jobs?
get paid to think. bots won't replace that. for a while at least.
The camera shutter speed on Chris needs some adjustments, when he is on there's definitely image flickering.
let us check this out.
What tools were used to make the demo reel? Can't be just after effects and premiere pro?!
no. there's some c4d in there i think. when i say some, i mean a lot.
Bro - I got the sharpest at Krav Maga when I went all out with the instructor. He fc8uked me up bigtime but you can learn so much from jumpng in the deepend.
Hell yeah TOOL!! 🤘
As always very insightful. you and ash are a really good combination I think for raw you can cover the whole industry of design I love it. Chris, what's the name of the app you use for chatting with us and how to enter?
It's Zoom.us for video conferencing. i like it. easy to use. relatively affordable. we tweet out the link and also post on our FB page.
Is it possible to hide the zoom.us toolbar during presentation mode? It's always popping up and blinking like disco.
Love the content!
Jonas Arleth I don't know how to turn that off. Perhaps I have to make someone else the host. Worth a shot.
One of the GoTo services (GoTo meeting, GoTo Webinar, etc) may allow a little more flexibility. I'm sure there are other tools out there as well.
49:02 - The film is "The Room"
that's it!!! bingo.
49:32-you must be talking about "The Room" hahaha
May I have a jpg to print this pyramid chart? I really like this model and I want to post it up in my room. Wax on Wax off
the pyramid is on my FB page: facebook.com/BizOfDesign/
Suggestions for someone who is entering the design field?
learn the tools.
How does a Graphic Designer start to make money and income through his/her work?
yaay Ash!
Did I spot a lil Tim Tadder cameo in Ash's highlight real??
not sure. we'll have to ask Ash.
I saw all the tweets flying back and forth and was wondering what was going on??...
it's a super interesting topic, with a lot of different aspects to it.
Chris, by any chance, are you going to Half Rez next month?
Grant Inouye yes! I'll be there. What should I talk about?
Oh what?? Will one of my life goals happen and I can finally meet The Chris Do in person?? I know whatever you talk about it'll be an amazing reference for the mograph community. I personally would love to hear more about:
• the challenges of inspiring or bringing out the drive in others
• the hoarding knowledge vs learning/teaching/(friendly) competing with each other (the iron sharpens iron that Ash also touched on)
• and getting past that instinctual, initial defensive reaction when getting a critique to move on into the mode of accepting, learning and growing from the comments and critiques
Grant Inouye good suggestions.
*1:17:52** HAYAO MYAZAKY !!!*
1:13:21 he can teach and open school... Jiu Jitsu Squared confirmed :D
J2
Hey Molly 😘 and howdy to the futur team 🤠
although Ash already talks a lot about his workflow/schedule on the collective podcast.....just saying....still a cool idea
now ash talk about animation / Densiy.. have change so much... do you think Chris that the Internet / streaming will take marked form the Kable tv we have to day. or change it??.
think about that one :D
restate your question. i'm not sure i understand.
Ok cool..
Today more young ppl Is started to stream movies or series.. on the internet.. and now there are live stream's as yours..
So do you think that "streaming". Will take or change the marked.. form cable tv as we know today?
Streamers have sponsors.. but Cable tv use advertisements i another way to get income..
that to different ways to get your income.. so where will the viweser be in 10-20 years.. at Cable tv or on the Streams..
casper figge video is exploding everywhere and all the major Players are looking to control the channel. Streaming will be one content type for sure.
Cool just Need to be sure i got
it right.. The Things between The lince... But ty for it and have a good day Chris and The team..
love the way Otto.. try's to tell that he rather want constructive criticism.. then he wanna her ppl B*tch over things..
the thing is ppl there can come with constructive criticism.. then you known something about the thing ppl criticism something or some one..
and othen ppl there just B*tch just do it to be seen and be heared. and they ppl take "easy" out..
but ppl there comes with constructive criticism.. need to heared the other person out and when to ppl speak about something they don't agree on.. will learn them bout something.. and learn to see thing form others ppl eye's do you well be better to understand other ppl.. and with open to start a "discussion"... in a friendly way will often do you will be better to you coming customers and a better designer.. because you will could see you world form other ppl's "eye's"
repetitions make you better..
but simple thanks for this show :D

the pyramid thing. for me, i think, u can stick to the original one. like u relate it to the Karate Kid movie i cn also relate it to my sport(sportclimbing). we follow a pyramid that the end goal is also mastery :) i followed the fb comment about that, and i dont think we can teach beginners principles on their first days. let them enjoy the tools an techniques, till they become enough familiar with the program. then we teach principles. principles first can get u sooo bored cz u cant express it with the available tools. js my point of view though. great episode! :) this shd be monthly. Ash is wicked!! and he loves TOOL too. coool!
Chico Christie Pace that sounds like a plan. We can make that happen.
awesome!! keep it up guys!! :)

"I cut if you bleed me" - Chris Do
By the way I love Carson
me too
A cool episode would include showing bad execution vs good execution, for similar product/category.
StelanTV uh. Okay. Started strong. Ended kind weird.
pretty relevant with ai now
y'know what... you ARE defined by your past. BUT THE FUTUR IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT. ROLL THE TITLES.
The strangest thing is that passion in crap makes crap lionized. All the worst of the worst in any genre of creativity leaves a cult following or impact on society. Be passionate. As Chris said...there are many flavors of ice cream everyone has their taste: you will find a niche or audience.
Mark H. There no 1 formula or 1 way. Just find your own.
another skateboarder. =)
Allan Monreal many of us out there.
Your story as a child trying to earn money to buy you own skateboard is pretty similar to mine and it inspired me to keep moving forward and be similar to your current story. 😁
MY GOD Chris is pretty, huh? I wasn't really gay until i saw this video. Maybe I'll be bi..?
don't tell my wife.
Ash was awesome but Chris Do is such a jerk this is tough to watch. I really feel sorry for his employees, learn how to treat people.
Awesome content but the host needs to stop being so high and mighty over everyone. It's so cringey and really takes away from the show. Even Ash very apparently feels the awkwardness.
he does? that's kind of weird. you're a mind reader too? ash and i are friends. friends don't think that of each other.
Friends can absolutely feel when their friend is being awkward and it shows in his body language very clearly. Public shaming isn't a good way to teach people behavior.
What was wrong with Aaron? Very unlike him, didn't say a word today.
i will ask.
