Personal story. A few months ago I had to reinstall Windows 7 to a laptop. I downloaded the ISO and used the COA for the install. Things went okay but it required me to do a phone verrfication. So I call the MSFT number and wait and wait and wait. Finally I get a answer as I didn't want to use the aotomated service. Three hang ups and...yeah its working. Sort of. I have a black screen. It's kind of a pain to use certain wi-fi hardware with it, but Debian is the only distro that uses apt-get and has a "standard" image that you can build your own system from. Apt-get is more convenient, to me at least, than pacman or yum. To each their own, and I'm probably biased because Ubuntu is the first distro I tried (7.10, way back in 2007). Ubuntu has screwed the pooch in my book, and Mint lost my respect after I figured out that it bundles an application that forces the default search engine in Firefox to Yahoo, regardless of the user's choice. It's easily removed after you figure out what it is, but I spent almost an hour mucking around in my about:config before I figured out what was doing it.

Well here is one thing that I know windows can do easily as long as you have the proper soundcard drivers installed is enabling and disabling stereo mix for doing let's plays and commentaries on videos. I have yet to figure out if you can do similar recordings under various Linux distros.

2. You can't necessarily move Linux from one computer to the other unless you have not compiled any package with -mtune and -march. i.e. Gentoo is not movable due to all of the packages and kernel being compiled for your specific hardware. 5. With Ubuntu, you can run do-release-upgrade, and it will move you to the next release.
you don't really need a good operating system when you are always in a game, just run windows and switch over when you start using your operating system directly instead :p
You can edit audio without having to re-encode the video. avconv and ffmpeg have the -an -vn -sn to not handle the audio, video, or subtitles flags. In combination with the acodec copy or vcodec copy options to extract just one stream. It is within your control (to improve it), but knowing how much to shift and pad the audio to match the video can be a pain and very time consuming guess work.
The original video I uploaded to this site did not have a sync problem. My internet connection is very slow so I did not feel like trying to upload the large file again.
Aside from the advantages stated althogh good. What about for the average gamer, gaming pc builder enthusiests, and the ending support that seems to all come from windows in those catagorys. Could I maybe get help or suggestions to get the same experience in linux?
You use a live cd to install. The browser can be used anytime during the install process. I use it all the time. It makes the ten minutes of install time fly buy.
The only reason I CAN NOT USE LINUX is because EVERY GAME IN MY STEAM LIBRARY CAN NOT RUN ON LINUX OS! I would use LINUX if there were more STEAM games compatible. I would waste 250 dollars worth of games. The same issue with most gamers.
Spatry - Was wondering do you have a video on installing/recommending any free AV softwares for Linux Lite..? Having a few issues finding something free that works. I know you don't need a AV but I tranfer files between other computers to my linux machine. Any help will be great! Thanks :)
I have a problem Spatry. Accidentaly I errased the Download folder. I downloaded the testdisk or sth like that (I dont remember the name of the program) and It appears a lots of folders with the name such as rec.1 rec.2 rec.3 etc. As they where privacy folders. I am on a spanish i-Pad and Im not in my computer now. Nice Video. Thanks for all
My computer died last year I was running Windows 7 on it. I liked Windows 7. I didn't like it as much as Xp because I had compatibility problems with some of my older games. So, I had to buy a new computer. I went to Walmart and did the price comparison and got the biggest bang for my buck. It had Windows 8. I didn't know anything about it. I just assumed it would be like Windows 7. Windows 7 was popular and they would have been idiots to screw it up, especially after the Vista fiasco. Was I wrong!...lol This OS made vista look like a masterpiece. I couldn't do anything with it. Worst of all, even more of my games wouldn't work. I knew I was in trouble when it forced me to open a Microsoft account before it would start. What drove me insane was it would announce that it would shut down to install update. It didn't even give me the option to postpone it. I would tell my friends, "Well, my computer is shutting down. I'll try to get back in under an hour." I'm glad this wasn't a work computer. I'm sure someone will tell me a way to disable it. I shouldn't have to. It was so bad that I went to a computer store and bought a refurb that had Seven. My new computer was now a serving tray because of lack of use. I tried Linux a few years ago, but didn't like it. It was unstable and I couldn't even figure out how to play DVD's on it. However, what did I have to lose? I tried to install Ubuntu, but Windows 8 wouldn't let me. In a fit of anger, I deleted Windows 8. Now, the refurb computer is a serving tray and my brand new computer works better than it ever has. There's no going back, now.
Hello! today i tried to install linux mint Cinnamon on my computer, i've tried making a partition, putting it on a flash drive, dvd, and even mounting a image, but none of these work. when i try and boot it windows starts. help please, and thank you. So, i used universal usb installer, and it seems to work. Thanks anyways!
Spatry needs more coffee. I miss the whole almost like shouting, RIGHT NOW ON SPATRY'S CUP OF LINUX (I put it in caps for emphasis, please don't get angry).
Wait? can i sell a distribution builded by me? I'm confused. Doesn't the GPL licence force me to to share the software with the same freedom that was given to me (which means i can't sell it as a product but i can ask a retribution for assistance ecc...)? I though that only with a BSD licence i can sell a thing that was free before.
To point 3: Is it also going to work with a new version? If I could transfer everything I currently have in my ubuntu 12.04 account to a freshly installed 14.04 account it would make updates so much quicker. Or are there changes in the home directories that dont allow this?
Nice video I have a question and i need your help in unix you can make lot of users and you can move from one user to another user very easy with alt+f1 or alt+f2 or alt+f3 etc how can i have lot of users in linux mint 16 and i want to move in them very easy or if i can have all the windows of them in one screen ??
Open terminal windows and use "su user" without the quotes, replacing user with the user you would like to access. This will open the shell as that user and from there you can launch programs as another user on your current desktop.
it depends a lot on what you prefer and your skill level. while i wouldn't say that there's a significant advantage using a more advanced OS like arch rather than something like mint or ubuntu, the former does let you do more. if tinkering is your thing consider something like arch or gentoo, if you're not, go for something in the debian branch. otherwise you could try some redhat or slackware derivate, but honestly i have no idea what other reason than personal preference there is to choose one of those.
I teach kids to use macs, My work computer is windows 7 and I have a windows 8.1 and i go home and use the computer of choice is Kubuntu. 10 years ago Kubuntu was a bit temperamental but has progressively become rock solid with a huge amount of choice in the software including the educational software. So far there is nothing i can do on a windows or mac that i can't do on my Linux. The macs can be temperamental with updates and software crashes where the kids irretrievably lose work and their updates are often so big they can be problematic but mostly if you have a mac you have all the same issues you have spoken about with win and being locked into the expensive mediocre Mac experience. My win7 has never had a virus problem so that is not an issue and it is rock solid and works well but the main point is my old Linux computer is a cheap acer that is 8 yeas old and out performs all the new macs at school and my win7 and 8 computers in everything but hard core rendering. It might be interesting to note that the computer of choice for the movie industry is Linux. > Spend the extra money on ram and chip size
I agree! Linux is better than Windows. Why I left Microsoft Windows out of my lifestyle for good. I use to have a windows netbook, but I decided to choose linux instead. Switching from Windows to linux is the enormous power to leave Windows out of our machines. The more as we use linux, Windows won't able to go into our machines.
ive been experimenting with linux for a while now, even use a rasp pi with raspian as remote storage and project backup for college, the more i use it the more im frustrated with windows, the only 2 things keeping me on windows is 1) interface im used to and 2) software not on linux, thanks to your vids ive found zorin, 1) down, :D

You raised some great points in this video but at this point I can't help but think windows vs Linux as a topic is dead now. Let people use windows if they want to, they are having an inferior experience but let them. Eventually, slowly, every new computer will be a Linux box. Its going to take a while but its happening. Steam Boxes will see to that I have no doubt. Its just going to be a slow burner.
I agree. Recently when I upgraded to Windows 8 I had issues with the new UEFI systems working with both systems. People kept saying "Why not run Linux in VM?", I told them "Because it makes me feel like I'm locked in a cage." I got the problem solved, but running Linux gives you a lot more feeling of freedom in the PC world, instead of a giant corporation controlling pretty much every aspect of how you use your PC.
Hi Spatz, my mom got a phone call from wintech support telling us we were having problems with her windows 8 laptop. long story short he wants us to pay to fix the lisences and certificates and it was gonna cost 400 bucks. he kept piching that the pc wont last a month so i told him ill just boot linux for free lol
***** I disagree with #2. I've moved my windows hard drives to multiple computers back and forth and never really had too many problems where I had to reinstall windows. Maybe in XP.. But 7 & 8 have no problem moving hard drives to different computers
I wish I could dump Windows and switch over permanently to Linux (I like the look of openSUSE or Cinnamon Mint), however I can't because there are several programs I use that don't have Open Source alternatives - plus I can't play the games I like, such as Battlefield 4 etc.
***** Well, technically, you can put it on any Distro. It's just illegal to distribute the ZFS Kernel Module built into one monolithic kernel binary. You have to do a lot of futzing around to get it working.
Linux is good but is also too difficult at the same time. The problem with Linux is that is difficult to download and install third party programs from the internet. If Linux can make it easier then Windows users will move to Linux permanently.
I Wouldn't say better,I'd Say Linux's advantages Over windows. One Thing that keeps me coming back/staying to my windows hard disk is programs,Not games as I tend not to play any more because of time. Time I could be spending on my goal & Studying. I'm talking about programs like Zbrush,Mudbox,Daz,Poser,Reality, hexagon. Those are programs I need to live by.
Some of the problems with the progression of linux is the community supporting it; they usually aren't satisfied with a price tag on software, and when there's no price tag, they're not satisfied if it's not open source. Not everyone is equal in skill and time is required to make a product so the creator should have a right in saying whether it should be free/open or not. If people wanted to know how a program is working, they should learn assembly/machine language. When things are free, people will abuse it. When it's open source, you get people changing the functionality and redistributing your work which can ultimately ruin the experience... just look at GNOME, it's worse than Unity. Until resources (food, water, shelter, electricity) are free, people should have a choice in the services they provide. Maybe in 10-20 years, linux would become more mainstream in the consumer market though that would depend on the next windows release. Even if linux were to become mainstream, the original users would be unsatisfied with the changes that will inevitably be made to suit the masses. As long as windows is still in the picture, linux will not gain dominance on it's own unless the linux community changes.
microsf121 at least OS X is UNIX and shares a lot of the functionality. cross platform compatibility isn't as bad as Windows's everything is closed mentality.
microsf121 BSD is UNIX. It's full of open source components and offers a lot of options with for example the shell. If you had taken the time to use it on your computer you might have known... I know it's cool to hate it because there's an Apple on it, but at least don't comment if you don't know what you are talking about...
yeah!, pretty cool stuff but, at the end, linux is not for the 95% of users, is not for the simple mortals so i think windows will always win for the ease of use and mass usage
This is a nice video, but I think if i'll show this to my friends and family which all uses Windows they will probably ask the same thing. Something like: "Can it go to youtube and facebook. And maybe play some facebook game?" I was never able to make adobe things run faster than Windows on a entry-level computer (like a C-50). I know it's not Linux's fault for adobe stuff (and nvidia, and ati, ...), but because this Linux is missing appeal to so many desktop users, or at least those close to me.
Nvidia is a big problem... But in the past you could just go to the software center and install Nvidia, now you can't D: However, Nvidia still works on ubuntu and some ubuntu based distros. Also one thing to note, Valve did make Steam for linux and are currently working on their own linux distro that will have Nvidia support and good gaming experience. Looking forward to that :3
oh I see yeh now you use the tool in your control panel to install the driver for it and kookoon yes you can do all that on a linux system that is a lot more secure and better to use.
10 very week reasons, 1 and 5 are simply not true. Sorry, I love Linux and use it stand-alone for light task, to have different environments dedicated just to one function, and to run my servers...But that is about all Linux distros can do. Yes, I know that variants of Linux can run about anything (I have one running high Calculus tasks), but they are not easy to work with (and can specifically only do that said task), nor are they for the average power-user (that actually wants to get work done, and doesn't have time to spend 10 hours a day programming an OS for one specific task). Linux is not bad for portable devices, and light tasks...But it is useless for professional photo/video editing/production/post-production, useless for CAD/CAM, useless every high-end game (and don't five me the Steam BS). Nevertheless I love using it for less intensive demands. Cheers.
Something strange happened in the conversion process... The audio goes out of SYNC. THIS IS BEYOND MY CONTROL.
How did you have done the cup of Linux edition of Manjaro?
S. E. Durán I used Manjaroiso to create my own custom build. We have a Manjaroiso support board at cupoflinux.com
OOOH cool :) I am Netrunner arch user today :)

Funny enough that video last year was the one which made me sub to your channel. man, it's been a year already.

Joshua Spruce Yeah, Windows can earn you kisses too. However, Windows kisses can give you a virus.
when will linux learn to automount the drives at startup.
year 2099 ?
Did you ever hear of Ninite for reason number 7? You can basically do the same thing on windows. The rest of these I can agree with though.
You need to get Ninite for that... I don't think I've ever found myself installing a package manager in Linux.
Still can't do the thing that's most important to me, which is run the games that I like to play.
you don't really need a good operating system when you are always in a game, just run windows and switch over when you start using your operating system directly instead :p
"Oh come on we don't need another one of these videos... why can't we just be friends and make fun of Mac together like usually?" -Windows
Usual*
That was a kick on the nuts for win users.
There's a typo on screenshot number 6. On the screenshot you wrote "RiserFS" . The right name is "ReiserFS" . :-D
What about the windows blue screen.
I love the remarks on #9 & #10 to the point I broke the replay button !!! :P
I moved my laptop SSD to my desktop without reinstalling and it worked. I think this is a new feature of windows 8.
Step 8... How? If Ubuntu is in process of instalation?
You use a live cd to install. The browser can be used anytime during the install process. I use it all the time. It makes the ten minutes of install time fly buy.
Thanks...
glad to help
The only reason I CAN NOT USE LINUX is because EVERY GAME IN MY STEAM LIBRARY CAN NOT RUN ON LINUX OS! I would use LINUX if there were more STEAM games compatible. I would waste 250 dollars worth of games. The same issue with most gamers.
Spatry - Was wondering do you have a video on installing/recommending any free AV softwares for Linux Lite..? Having a few issues finding something free that works. I know you don't need a AV but I tranfer files between other computers to my linux machine. Any help will be great! Thanks :)
Unless you run programs you don't know what are or use copied software on a vulnerable computer, that won't help you.
Nice Video.
Thanks for all
Where's the next episode of kdenlive workshop.
Would you still recommend Linux to intensives users of AutoCAD products (CAD, Maya, 3ds Max, etc.)?
My computer died last year I was running Windows 7 on it. I liked Windows 7. I didn't like it as much as Xp because I had compatibility problems with some of my older games. So, I had to buy a new computer. I went to Walmart and did the price comparison and got the biggest bang for my buck. It had Windows 8. I didn't know anything about it. I just assumed it would be like Windows 7. Windows 7 was popular and they would have been idiots to screw it up, especially after the Vista fiasco.
Was I wrong!...lol
This OS made vista look like a masterpiece.
Well thought out and informative. Thank you.
I would love to see a "Linux Mint - Cup of Linux Edition" :D
BRILLANT, I'll share the heck out of this.
The GPL doesn't prevent you from making money on your work. You just have to include the source code so that it can be viewed and modified.
i was told i can,t sell linux is that true
or how true
You can SELL your own Linux creation.

thankyou
Great video Spatry!!! Be safe !
To point 3:
Is it also going to work with a new version? If I could transfer everything I currently have in my ubuntu 12.04 account to a freshly installed 14.04 account it would make updates so much quicker. Or are there changes in the home directories that dont allow this?
I have taken HOME settings from ubuntu and used them on ARCH! They are just your personal settings for applications not the software itself.

thx that is awesome.
Nice video
I have a question and i need your help in unix you can make lot of users and you can move from one user to another user very easy with alt+f1 or alt+f2 or alt+f3 etc
how can i have lot of users in linux mint 16 and i want to move in them very easy or if i can have all the windows of them in one screen ??
Open terminal windows and use "su user" without the quotes, replacing user with the user you would like to access. This will open the shell as that user and from there you can launch programs as another user on your current desktop.
I think Linux is better than Win for Programmers , with most User , that is Win, because WIn is popular and easy use
byw what is the best version of linux for 2014??? Just want to get as many opinions as possible from everyone its how I learn.
it depends a lot on what you prefer and your skill level. while i wouldn't say that there's a significant advantage using a more advanced OS like arch rather than something like mint or ubuntu, the former does let you do more. if tinkering is your thing consider something like arch or gentoo, if you're not, go for something in the debian branch. otherwise you could try some redhat or slackware derivate, but honestly i have no idea what other reason than personal preference there is to choose one of those.
Can you get familiar with mac, or bring in a friend and do why Linux beats Mac?
i use windows 7 because i dont have issues and it has all of the games available
Well done Spatry!
Great Video!
This looks like it was filmed in 2006,but I like Your content. Subscribe!
Awesome video!
I agree! Linux is better than Windows.
Why I left Microsoft Windows out of my lifestyle for good.
I use to have a windows netbook, but I decided to choose linux instead. Switching from Windows to linux is the enormous power to leave Windows out of our machines. The more as we use linux, Windows won't able to go into our machines.
tnx for manjaro
windows and linux are both great operating systems but linux does things windows dosen't and windows does things that linux dosen't.
ive been experimenting with linux for a while now, even use a rasp pi with raspian as remote storage and project backup for college, the more i use it the more im frustrated with windows, the only 2 things keeping me on windows is 1) interface im used to and 2) software not on linux, thanks to your vids ive found zorin, 1) down, :D

Its just going to be a slow burner.
i am absolutly agree this arguments, must bigest reazon why linux better is linux makes me feel something call freedom
Great video, it was like watching a chineese Kong Fu movie that had been dubbed, It was good material also
Hi Spatz,
my mom got a phone call from wintech support telling us we were having problems with her windows 8 laptop. long story short he wants us to pay to fix the lisences and certificates and it was gonna cost 400 bucks. he kept piching that the pc wont last a month so i told him ill just boot linux for free lol
***** I disagree with #2. I've moved my windows hard drives to multiple computers back and forth and never really had too many problems where I had to reinstall windows. Maybe in XP.. But 7 & 8 have no problem moving hard drives to different computers
it seems absurd to me how someone can be a windows "fanboy." hah!
I wish I could dump Windows and switch over permanently to Linux (I like the look of openSUSE or Cinnamon Mint), however I can't because there are several programs I use that don't have Open Source alternatives - plus I can't play the games I like, such as Battlefield 4 etc.
#6 use ZFS
Which distro has zfs
*****
Well, technically, you can put it on any Distro. It's just illegal to distribute the ZFS Kernel Module built into one monolithic kernel binary. You have to do a lot of futzing around to get it working.
GastonAsston Then, I wait until BTRFS is finally ready.
7. On Windows, try Ninite. :3
I haven't used Windows as my OS for 7 years.
Linux is good but is also too difficult at the same time. The problem with Linux is that is difficult to download and install third party programs from the internet. If Linux can make it easier then Windows users will move to Linux permanently.
Did you know that recently about 2 weeks ago, Linux received some viruses. You can learn more by searching for PuppyLinuxWorld on RUclips.
I Wouldn't say better,I'd Say Linux's advantages Over windows. One Thing that keeps me coming back/staying to my windows hard disk is programs,Not games as I tend not to play
any more because of time.
The Linux community is far too divived to gain any significant market share and become a threat to Windows or OS X.
microsf121 at least OS X is UNIX and shares a lot of the functionality. cross platform compatibility isn't as bad as Windows's everything is closed mentality.
Echoz28
OS X is not Unix. It's a flavor of BSD and it is just as closed as Windows is.
microsf121 BSD is UNIX. It's full of open source components and offers a lot of options with for example the shell. If you had taken the time to use it on your computer you might have known...
I know it's cool to hate it because there's an Apple on it, but at least don't comment if you don't know what you are talking about...
Echoz28
OS X uses the XNU kernel which stands for "X is not Unix."
At best, OS X is a hybrid.
OS X is Unix-compliant, not Unix-based.
yeah!, pretty cool stuff but, at the end, linux is not for the 95% of users, is not for the simple mortals so i think windows will always win for the ease of use and mass usage
This is a nice video, but I think if i'll show this to my friends and family which all uses Windows they will probably ask the same thing. Something like: "Can it go to youtube and facebook. And maybe play some facebook game?"
I was never able to make adobe things run faster than Windows on a entry-level computer (like a C-50).
I know it's not Linux's fault for adobe stuff (and nvidia, and ati, ...), but because this Linux is missing appeal to so many desktop users, or at least those close to me.
Nvidia is a big problem... But in the past you could just go to the software center and install Nvidia, now you can't D:
However, Nvidia still works on ubuntu and some ubuntu based distros.
Also one thing to note, Valve did make Steam for linux and are currently working on their own linux distro that will have Nvidia support and good gaming experience. Looking forward to that :3
LinucNerd actually you can still I am currently have my nvidia graphics card installed and can use it very well, what distro are you using?
corey drew bruce No, I know you can install Nvidia but, for a loooooooong time ago you would install it trough the software center.
oh I see yeh now you use the tool in your control panel to install the driver for it and kookoon yes you can do all that on a linux system that is a lot more secure and better to use.
You did all the most insignificant reasons..
let me know some more significant ones
exelent but sound it's out of sync...
Darn, youtube only has 1 thumbs up.
4 people from microsoft doesn't like this :D:D
SEE PART 3 HERE ruclips.net/video/TTOjLX-RcVs/видео.html
the major problem with linux is that it has no games.
You know that Steam is compatible with Linux and most games are?
half the games are compatible with linux
never optimized for it though
dead xp 4-04-14 dead win7 15-01-15
ubuntu opcion my
Brick Top tells about pigs :D
windont haha lol.... linux linux linux linux al the way. well said spatry
Cheers.
