  • This video shows how I replaced a broken ceramic impeller shaft with a custom made brass shaft. Using 3/8 brass rod, I cut it to length and sanded it using 400/600 grit sandpaper while spinning it in a Dremil rotary tool (to ensure even width reduction).
    Instead of paying upwards of $20 for a store-bought replacement, I was able to fix the impeller for less than $4 - In all likelihood, with a more durable alternative.
    Thanks for watching.

    Great video I just fixed mine DIY also. I have a Eheim 2211 I was just cleaning my impeller and my shaft broke . I needed a quick fix and had no proper sized rods nor could I find one. So I used a Plastic dollar tree Qtip Rod (just popped the cotton tips off) and it was the proper size and length. Worked like a charm. It sure gives one a sense of accomplishment.

    Great idea, but keep in mind that brass has copper in it, and some fish are sensitive to the copper concentration in the water. Invertebrates can't tolerate copper even in low concentrations. 316 stainless might be a better choice.

      Excellent point. Stainless steel would be best! Thx.

    FYI if anyone still needs the shaft and busing, they cost 5 dollars now, and not 20 dollars as he states in his video.
    So instead of DYI, your probably best off ordering a new set as the ceramic shaft is rust proof and works in marine environments.

    Using brass in a aquarium filter a big no, no. Best option is to buy a used Eheim in the classifieds. They go cheap.

    i wud do things from creativity rather then waste more money , it enlightens brain when u think out of box u can invent new things , u can use bicycle tire rim sticks too
    obviously we r not that poor but there is some fun satisfaction when u achieve results using brain rather then zombie throwing money using others intellect lol

    Brass is copper zink alloy, all the best for the aquarium. Only if it is not for plants, then ok.

    I just bought this shaft it's 9 bucks from Big Als .com. Ceramic will last for years brass won't. And I don't think your bushing will either. I liked to know how you made out with your invention in a few years nice try anyway. Hope it works

    What you need is a 3/32 stainless rod or I fixed mine for 2$ with a "Stainless Steel Blackhead Acne Remover" search it up on ebay.... I cut the right size of my impeller rod. Good luck breaking a metal rod

    so you spent how many hours to avoid a 20$ purchase ???

    • @JeffWillProfess
      @JeffWillProfess  8 лет назад +4

      About an hour. More importantly, didn't add to a landfill.

    • @svtcontour
      @svtcontour 7 лет назад +10

      That doesn't honestly make sense. If you spent $20, you would not be adding the filter to the landfill either. Now you have a couple busted coat hangers to throw into a landfill. You also spent time going to a hobby shop after you already tried a couple coat hangers, and you still had to sand and modify the brass. I'd say you probably spent 2-3 minimum with trial and error, time of transit...etc.
      Also no matter how well you prepped the brass rod, it will wear down the inside of the impeller which is more than $20 and you wont be able to fix that. You're better off just getting the right part. I've got a couple Eheim 2217 and a couple 2260 and knowing I'd be keeping fish for along time and knowing these are well engineered product (but of course shit can happen to anything), I've ordered a couple key pieces to have on hand just incase. That way I'm not caught off guard trying to jerry rig something. In the grand scheme of things, the extra cost is nothing. Factoring the price of the tank, the filter, the electricity, heaters, food, fish... Having $20-$50 worth of parts handy is nothing. Just sayin.

      @@svtcontour what complete wanker you and REGGIE are, two upstart snobby no it all pricks is what best describes you two, must come as some shock to you two that some people unlike yourselves I`d imagine, take pleasure in fixing stuff while at the same time saving a few bucks, if your to Lazy and want to run to your nearest local retail store lining there pockets with cash at a moments time something not functioning to your liking, even tho it could possibly be an easy fix such as this guys just described, you go do that mate open that check book up and buy them Key Peices that you probably wont ever need and will more then likely sit in your shed the rest of its life. Give this guy some credit for thinking it through making the parts and fixing it , I dont think he was much concerned about a couple of bloody coat hangers as much as you were, and the 2-3-4 hrs whatever time it took in transit that you spent so much time on calculating for whatever reason . I` m sure he survived that harrowing transit ordeal to the Hobby shop. Got to say you did make one good point tho, I dont think id be wanting you to jerry rig anything either. just sayin.

      @@wagnerbaseballgloverepair6853 Na not that bad, you can get that shaft with end mounts for 15 bucks. The hangar simply will not work anyway. Eventually it will rust and be a mess. It is nylon for a reason so that it can rotate with little friction. It will wear right into the impeller and ruin it. He will be just causing more damage and be spending more money in the end.
