I bet you're very proud of your 3x great grandfather. He was an amazing hero but not properly compensated by the US gov't for what he contributed to the Yankee victory. I love the fact that he came back and bought his master's (father's?) house back. Would love to see the story on "Finding Your Roots." Have you done DNA testing? BTW, a gorgeous home.
Shania Smalls, what a wonderful heritage you have! Did you have any other stories about him that your family passed down? Do you have any insight as to how that impacted your family through the generations?
Amazing person, just recently read about him, to see the home he acquired when he once was a slave and the property of a slave master is so awesome. The house is decorated so beautifully. This history would make a wonderful movie. Thanks for sharing.
Its unbelievable we still havent got this story in movie format as he had predicted would only be a matter of time. It certainly is a story worthy of the big screens and a bit of history most Americans never learned or briefly learned of him stealing a ship. Later becoming a congressman and buying his masters home was a historical flex
Hey I'm doing a research project on Congressman Smalls for National History Day. Is there anyone you could direct me to in your family or any information you could dig up about him? It would be such a great help; we need some more primary sources. He definitely needs some more coverage, he is a truly inspiring figure.

Mr. smalls is someone who should be shown to the generations and the Masters alike I could imagine how this brave, unique, insanely courageous gentleman. He is a lesson to all that through hardship heroes are born know that who you are whatever your hardships you are here truly for a reason all love and respect to his family and his memory.
I first heard of Robert Smalls during a horse cart tour in Charleston, SC. After hearing the amazing story my first thought was, 'Why the $#%& is this not a movie?' I'm still asking the same question ten years later. Hollywood has loads of $$ to make and remake comic book movies but none for an exciting, unique & amazing story of a true American hero?
Because he was a Republican, the ONLY party that ever helped black people! Hollywood is full of Left jerks, who only want to portray that which fits their false narrative. The Dems have been using black people as pawns for votes, but little else. This would make a wonderful biographical movie!
Edward I was fortunate to have met your mother years ago when I was District Manager for Sprint in SC. She was a fine lady and a true treasure of Beaufort. Sure miss my home town. Someday I may get back. Take care.
my father's home , my grandmother maggie Fripp. and grandfather Sam Washington. . when he passed he left 82.000 dollars in the bank of beaufort. my father was sammy Fripp..his brother johnie Fripp had a fishing boat. they made it big.
I wish that South Carolina would consider doing something significant regarding the PORT ROYAL EXPERIMENT and its history there in Beaufort. Its a shame that nothing is really documented or preserved of any value there. It should happen.
I saw another historical video that said a new historical museum with films was opening in downtown Beaufort in 2008, which was 12-13 years ago. I never saw it on my several trips to Beaufort, but I did buy a DVD that had some history on it, and I toured several historic sites on St Helena Island, and elsewhere, too. The Gullah Festival in May at Waterfront Park is fun and educational, too.
Absolutely stunning! Thanks for the tour! I don't know if this was open to tour on my previous trips to Beaufort, and walking around, as I did know of Robert Smalls. Perhaps, it was a private residence, so could not be toured. The only thing I would add to the beautiful landscaping, would be some flowers for more color to contrast the abundant green. I cannot imagine a more beautiful neighborhood anywhere, than in The Point neighborhood with Tidalholm, and some of the other great Beaufort mansions. I know this video was shot 10+ years ago, but curious as to what home would be worth in early 2021? I love the layout, with each room being quite substantial. Thanks!
You got your wish. It did. Robert Smalls is thought to have been the slave son of John McKee. Henry McKee was his half-brother and for a time his slave Master. Robert's descendants lived in the home up until the 1950s.
No, they are not related- Biggie last name is wallace, his mother is from the island. Please research the history, the smalls family name belongs to my family and I Love what I learned so far. still connecting the dots'

This home is interesting it it's self, Seems the spirit, doesn't like the fact that this guy, is showing it for sale. Times, 2:45 to 5:57 a lot of static in the sound. Some stronger then others. Amazing house restoration (I love it!), and an equally amazing story about Robert Smalls.
That house should be a museum

He was a Republican and black, and they will have to cover up that fact in a Hollywood movie.
Beautifully restored. I enjoyed the tour.
