    Little Simz continues to show why she is one of the best rappers in the world. This album was amazing from the content, to the production, and the rapping. There is much great albums this year so I can't decide where this album ranks yet.

      You ain’t lied!! I been working on a top rappers right now list (hopefully will get that out soon) and even before this list - I had her pretty high up. I think this project not only cemented that but pushes her even bigger up the list. My AOTY list is in shambles. I got a general idea but i thought I had my top 5 or so solidified….that’s ruined now lol

      @@BSideRapReviews Her album run of Grey Area, SIMBI, and No Thank You makes her top 5 caliber rapper rn.

    Simz dropped this album at the end of the year. No fanfare, no marketing.
    As far as I understand, she has ditched all the commercial twats and she is doing it totally independently.
    Fucking love Simz

    • @BSideRapReviews
      @BSideRapReviews  2 года назад +2

      Not to mention she dropped it on a Monday! That’s pretty insane. I didn’t know anything of her label disputes before this album - hoping she continues to do everything independent. For mainstream artists who are just chasing hits I think the label system works, but for artists who value their art…they create so much better music without labels handcuffing them - with the exception of this artist ran labels that are becoming more and more popular

      I feel like y’all def getting some recognition with guys like Skepta, stormzy, and Dave (who I think is considerably better than the first two i named) but I think Simz is the first UK rapper where if you’re a fan of excellent rap you straight up can’t ignore.
      I’m happy about that for y’all too. I grew up in suburban GA and I didnt really understand how satisfying it is to have your fav artists from where you’re from until I moved to Atlanta as an adult.

    • @BSideRapReviews
      @BSideRapReviews  2 года назад +4

      You spot on! I think she got really high musicality as far as song structure, ear for production, hell even just creating a vibe. And normally it seems like rappers with high musicality aren’t normally the best rappers like Travis Scott, Anderson paak (when he decides to rap lol), JPEGMAFIA (he good but not the greatest lyricist). But with Simz she got the really high musicality plus she can really rap. It’s only a couple other rappers with that same skill set and the normally go o to succeed mainstream too. Like Kendrick and JID come to mind.
      And ABSOLUTELY!! I’m a Boldy fan and that’s his best project imo. I didn’t have a the channel once it dropped but I still vividly remember hearing that project. Wasn’t expecting it cus it sounds nothing like any of his other projects. Medusa, Mommy Dearest and welcome to 76 stay in my rotation!

      @@BSideRapReviews ah mate he’s dope, for me he’s the bridge between hip hop and Grime, can hear influences of both. Hoodies is a modern classic imo, minimalistic but biting production, snappy grime MCing style covering politics/relationships/street life… conscious w/out being corny or preachy. He’s from Forest Gate (East London) where I was born, I think he captures perfectly what it’s like to live in London for a lot of us. Like Nas did for Queens or WSG for Buffalo.

      I need to confess that i'm a 63 year old white guy.
      I first heard Simz on the radio on 6 Music; it's a uk radio station.
      Bear in mind that i'd never previously listened to any rap music, but in 2021 September, I was driving my car listening to 6 music, and "I might be introvert" came on
      It blew my mind. I'd never heard anything like it; and I for the first time, realised that rap music might be a serious form of art.
      Anyway, it was the cinematic scope of the production and the soundscape of what she was producing ( I understand that the production also includes Inflo) that caused me to realize that she is a very significant artist.
      So, I'm a white boy, but I happen also to be a born again Simz fan.

      I’ve pretty much always listened to rap but I didn’t really see it as an actual art form til i was about 13-14. I had a similar experience as you, but it was an extremely unpopular song called “escape earth” by a rapper named Diverse and that’s where I realized how much meaning art could have. The music that formed me was Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, then prog rock, then blues; particularly John Lee Hooker, then punk followed by post punk. I also listen to some classical music.
      Regarding rap, I just assumed that I was not the target audience, so I didn't pay any real attention to it.
      The reason why Introvert, the track, hit me so hard that day, was that she was expressing what it is to be an introvert navigating the world; and that makes it universal.It's not about being, say black, although she has a well developed sense of cultural identity, but it's about a way of being in the world as a psychological type; and _that's_ how I was able to relate.
      Even taking the next track on the album, Woman; she makes it so universal, that I, a man can feel that I'm identifying with women. It's insane what she achieves.
      Another point to make about Introvert, the track, is that you need to see the accompanying video; and then you realize that she is not a musician, but a mixed media artist.
      Anyway man, please suggest other rap artists that I should explore.
