I was reading a novel recently which mentioned the method of painting with a pallete knife. That really intrigued me as I couldn't imagine how someone could paint well with a knife. Immediately went to youtube and saw this amazing video. Great work.

Hi Paul. What a great painting! I’ve watched many of your videos now, and I see you as a great expressionist who focuses on atmosphere. I said once before that one of your paintings was very Turneresque. I haven’t changed my mind at all. Your use of the palette knife really punches home expressionism and atmosphere. I always look forward to your videos and I learn much from you. Thank you for sharing once again Paul. Graeme 🇦🇺PS. The best technique I’ve learned is the acrylic base, followed by oils on top. I reckon that’s your secret to creating atmosphere. Your paintings give off a nice smokey effect, which reminds me of burning off in the Australian bush. Take care.

Hi Paul, I took your advice and watched a couple of videos by Richard Musgrove-Evans. At first, I had no idea what he was doing. He was all over the place. Then I worked out he was applying dark shadows first, then working up to lighter colours. Suddenly, everything came together! He’s a fast worker too. His is a technique I’ve not seen before. He certainly knows his game and captures the Australian context. He reminds me of the Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe who attempted to capture the Australian story in his compositions. He fought against Australian’s composing in a European style. He focused on the flatness and the wide expanse of the outback. He’s someone to listen to if you’re into orchestral music. One is Kakadu (which is in the Northern Territory near Darwin and one I visited 2 years ago. Spectacular). Take care Paul. I look forward to watching your next video. Graeme

Great tutorial Paul. Loved the finished painting. I use the palette knife a lot myself, but have never attempted to do a painting just with the knife. This is just an observation, but I think the total use of a palette knife produces a painting that is almost abstract. All the better for it.

Hi, Paul! I really enjoyed your palette knife painting! I've practiced a lot with the palette knife on Bob Ross mountains and snow, but I've never tried to make a painting with a palette knife. I think it sounds very fun! And I loved seeing Henny in his new bedroom! I generally don't like seascapes, 🎉but I really liked the colors you used in this one. I liked the energy in your painting. I'm going to think on it a bit, because I think I actually might want to try this one! That's another milestone for me. I never thought I would do a seascape painting!! Thank you for enticing me out of my self-created narrow box! I'm going to have a lot more adventures in painting because of you! Also, it was fun to hear the back story of you getting Terri her first box of paints and making her a pallete knife! Thank you for this video, and, Best wishes from Utah!

Hi Erica - yes the little stinker kicked all the paint out and he's napping in there right now. But Poppy cat also grabs a nap there too. So I'll be using my paintbox easel for a while till they get bored and find a new box to call home. I wach a lot of dirrerent artits and gain so much inspiration from them. So I hope I can pass along the bits I picked up. Somewhere in the lost of our home there is a cardboard tube full of old paintings. When I find it I'll film it being opened. Its a time capsule from 25 years ago when we started our journey from hobby to teaching. That should be fun and maybe a little scary too! Have fun painting and try a seascape. I didn't like my first 20 - 30 but they grew on me in the end 🤣 Love to Utah as always - Paul 😃🥰

Hi Paul! Thank you for sharing your newest knife style painting. Your dedication to this piece has encouraged me to make a new painting using knives. Your world here really pops with light, color and movement- reminding me of how free art can be with gorgeous results. I love how the waves spray color everywhere! Isn’t water remarkable? The mesmerizing movement of water draws me and when we can capture its energy and flow in a canvas with merely a knife (or a plastic plant label!) is amazing! I love the freedom of play here with knives. And with such little paint! Once again, another beautiful painting that is very fun to try- and very easy to do clean up afterwards! 🤩

Hi Paul. How are you. Wonderful video. I enjoyed every second. It's amazing how much you can do with just one tool. It's really wonderful how much freedom you have in creating your works. Many painters stick to one technique exclusively and nothing more. But you do what you like. I'm glad about that. But I have questions. 1. Tell me if you are thinking about using Gel oil painting medium and Cold wax medium in this technique. I hear he uses us for palette knife techniques. 2. Why don't you combine the Bob Ross pallet knife and a traditional pallet knife? I tried that combination myself and it's not bad. It just needs a little practice. That's it for my questions. Before I finish I would like to tell you that I have started working on my channel. Several videos have already been posted.
Thank you for your wonderful work and wonderful videos. Until next time, I wish you a new and prosperous week. Have a peaceful day and a pleasant evening and happy painting.

Hi David - to be honest I have a few tubes of old oil paint that are past their best so they are already pretty thick and gooey. If I added gel or wax I'd need a hammer and chisel to apply them 🤣 One day I'll treat myself to some impasto paints and gel but thats for the future. I wanted to keep this demo to a couple of knives. Bob's is great for those big sweeping snow scenes and rocks. But I wanted somethinga little less intinidating - for me! Good luck with the channel and making videos. It's rewarding - if a bit time consuming so have fun - Paul 😃

Hi Amy 🥰Happy Bday to Mum too - my Mum just turned 90 in October! Yes YT drop the ball on me too ggrrrr. I've always marveled at how a painting can look so good from a distance and yet quite a mess up close. From across the room my seascape jumps off the canvas - but looks a real dogs dinner when I'm painting it. I'm sure with practice I'll get better but I must learn to leave it alone - this is mud mixing danger zone for sure. Jump in and have fun and well meet up online soon. Best wishes - Paul 😃😍😎
