  • Nikolas Prassas - 'Empathy and the Constitution of the Self in the Philosophy of Edith Stein'
Empathy and the Constitution of the Self in the Philosophy of Edith Stein The end and purpose of this paper is to offer an expository analysis of the concept of empathy as it is presented in the work of Edith Stein. The text with which I shall be concerned is her remarkable doctoral dissertation 'Zum Problem der Einfühlung,' an essay conceived of and composed while Stein was studying under Edmund Husserl at the university of Freiburg. In particular, the focus of my enquiry shall be around a set of propositions that Stein makes as to the relation between empathic acts and the constitution of the human person. I intend to show that for stein empathy-the act by which other living bodies are apprehended as conscious persons-is the condition for all intelligible experience. Without the radical capacity to stand at the point of a foreign consciousness we would no longer be able to understand ourselves as persons situated in and opposed to a real world that has its existence outside of the ego. Stein, I shall argue, delivers us into the heart of the mystery of empathy-and for this reason deserves our renewed attention

Very helpful. Thank you. Loved the Weil quote.
Empathy towards others is undoubtedly a phenomenological fact, and intuition of possible communion with them is undoubtedly basic to all intelligibility. But IMO this is primarily towards God, not other human beings (pace Newman).
Possible communion with another is the basis of intelligibility because it is fundamentally (a la Pragmatism) the possibility of wilful, morally evaluated, action. This phenomenon gives us the basic concepts of me and an-other with whom I can cooperate. The latter 'other', as an empirical observation, is my intelligible environment - which includes other people. It involves, through my conscience, a moral evaluation of different options. This is a quasi-empathetic intuition of An-Other behind our environment: the Creator who has morally willed it into being, inviting us to act well.
It's the whole of the cosmic environment in which we find ourselves, that is the context for recognising other humans and their moral value.
So I’m with Newman on conscience. Empathetic intuition of God comes before that of other humans, not the other way around. And our own present moment creativity is the prime (highly analogical) image of what it’s like to be God. Thanks again.

I applaud you, Nikolas Prassas and all there. This concern of empathy had succumb a Master to Philosophy and a Doctorate. I hope she was chosen from all that were discussed to see her a Church Doctor soon, as work that is now in Rome for the verification of her work in phenomenology. I see her work in empathy had radiated throughout her work to see a mind of God. I think essence very much a part of where we find empathy. I am beginning a facebook page ( along with verification of her being chosen Church Doctor and proving her sainthood of a novel I wrote entitled Ten Men and a Road) that is entitled Ten Men and a Road and for Pope John Paul 11 who is also involved as being called for Church Father and yes, The Great but Edith had gotten press with his making her a saint. I wanted to see if they can help sciences and faith concerns yet of it, could congratulate you. I wanted to really think as this when I first had someone see this work of Ten Men right thinking and you helped greatly. So few gointo depth of philosophy as easy as you had. Continue. I hope a theologian!! I want to post this to her facebook page I am making to start serious discussion of this work of hers in empathy. Thank you so so much for thinking of u tube as vehicle to school study.
