I served with the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. When we deployed to Operation Desert Storm, a PsyOps Platoon was attached to my Troop. Before the the start of the Ground War, one of our Scout Platoons had the mission to provide overwatch up to the border area where Iraqi units were known to be dug in, while the PsyOps guys,( call sign "Mind Bender") played the sound track of F-Flicks of women having orgasms etc. It was hilarious.

I was a PSYOP team chief for 8 years. We did plenty of CQB. I think people get confused because PSYOP is best known for developing leaflets and shit but PSYOP detatchments also have tactical teams that embed with line elements. I went on plenty of missions with MP's, Infantry, Field Artiliery, and even ODA. Believe me, the TPT guys don't like the leaflets and shit either; we used to take the leaflets to the burn pit and burn them then in our SITREP we'd say we diseminated all of it and give the grid coordinates of the burn pit.
As for the tactical stuff, the deal was that as a 3 man team we really couldn't get to a lot of places by ourselves so we'd embed with whatever unit was going where we needed to be. The deal was that we'd help them with their mission if they then pulled security or whatever for us while we did ours. I know the 2ID and 82nd Airborne guys I worked with liked having us with them. The couple of times I went out with ODA, they seemed kind of annoyed at our presence and if I'm being honest, I was annoyed to be there too. Those missions didn't really feel like there was overlap and it felt more like we were there so that our detachment NCOIC could say his guys were going out with special forces. It always felt to me like the line guys either thought I was some sort of super high speed ghost operator (which I wasn't) or a complete POG (which I also wasn't) but there was no in between.

Army recruiting didn’t do this video, 4th Psyop Group did. Just so you know, SSG Knauss, who was the last soldier to die in Afghanistan and one of the now famed 13 was a Psyop guy. He wasn’t on a computer in some closet. Its also not a new thing. You missed the symbology of the ghost hanging in a tree. Thats the patch of the ghost army from WWII, that used this capability to trick Hitler into moving his forces away from the main US advancements. They weren’t in some safe room either. Out front on the line taking fire from Germany’s primary units so the Allied main assault would have less resistance. The USASOC HQ is called the McClure building. Named after MG Robert McClure a Psychological Operations Specialist and considered the father of Special Operations. SWCS, was once called the Psychological Warfare Department. You didn’t even know Psyop guys went to language school (the exact same one SF guys go to), and have never worked with one but your going to educate civilians about what they really do. Ok my guy. There is alot more to the job than sitting on a computer, throwing leaflets out of a plane and loudspeakers. For anyone considering the job that may feel different after watching this review, they are off on most of what they said. Talk to someone that does the job. SF guys don’t like sharing the command with others. Thats about the only true thing you can take away from this review. By the way there is no S in PSYOP it’s an acronym. The OP in PSYOP is operations. No need for the extra letter it makes you sound ignorant.

A lot of SOF guys get pissy when other SOF units besides theirs gets notorious. When in reality everyone participates equally. And to be quite honest as badass as wearing black OCP’s rolling in on a little bird with quad nods is to capture an HVT, conventional infantry has had to do similar shit. And in all reality Infantry is the only reason anything works in the Army. The entire US Military revolves around supporting Combat Arms, specifically the Infantry. The infantry is worst and best job for a soldier, because you get to do the walking around at night shooting targets and flying on helicopters, but you also see the other side of paperwork and mindless chores of other MOS’s. Guys - you should have someone who actually works in PSYOP on here. Y'all come across as having no idea what PSYOP is or what they do. I was only in PSYOP for 5 years but I had teams:
    - On objective with a T2 element (doing CQB in some cases) though I agree it's not the focus of PYSOP and shouldn't be highlighted so heavily in recruiting
    - Doing very shadowy interagency work
    - Using their TS-SCI every day on compartmentalized programs
    - Punching way above their weight class by rank; I had E6/E7s sending plans to the SECDEF for approval in a sensitive environment and getting recognition from him at the end of their tour
    - Using their languages to work through local forces in building influence campaigns or countering adversary propaganda
    - Doing a lot of cool stuff that I really can't talk about here, but if you look at the schools that PSYOP folks routinely go to (Military Deception, SERE-C, Social Media Exploitation, etc) you might get some idea
Was the recruiting video accurate? It was maybe 50% accurate to my experience, but PSYOP is so broad and doing so many different things in so many different countries and environments that after 5 years in the community I'd hesitate to make any blanket statements about what PSYOP is and isn't.

    couple of things:
    * plenty of psyop guys were out with infantry teams in Iraq. I was one of them. Deployed with 1st MEF at first (that was weird/great to be with Marines), then I was transferred to Baghdad, then Talil where we jerked off until the SOFA agreement in 09. Passive intelligence gathering when on missions was a lot of what we did.
    * Regarding manipulating riots: yes, that's possible. Psyop deals with manipulating masses to modify behavior.
    * We did a LOT of practicing room-clearing and basic infantry TTPs, not to be good at doing it, but in case whomever they were attached to needed an extra gun. But previous psyop fuckup battalion fucked up psyop reputation by being douchy and stupid, thinking they were "high speed".
    * Psyop does indeed do language training. It's really *really* helpful. We had a 6 week arabic course, but plenty of people go to Defense Language Institute for language help.
    * Afghanistan was fucking stupid for leaflet drops... nobody could read anyway. Iraq was stupid for leaflet drops, because they would put out handbills and drop leaflets saying "pick up trash, keep Iraq beautiful". Are you fucking kidding me? Leaflet drops.... saying pick up your trash... genius work there, guys. Loudspeakers, newspaper articles, tv spots, etc. were all places where psyop worked.

I worked quite a bit with psyops before and after (not during) JUST CAUSE. They helped put a more effective spin on our tactical deception activities. They also produced the videos we played to the civilian population during and after the operation and provided direction for photo ops with regards to the swearing in of the new government. In the aftermath, when I was working to turn the Panamanian Air Force into a civil aviation service organization, they gave me a lot of great ideas to help convince the general population that the new NAS was not out to terrorize them, but to help them. A few examples: from camo paint job to one resembling the Panamanian flag, and landing helicopters on the beach on Saturday and Sunday, giving impromptu tours to the sunbathers. Not exciting, and certainly not parked at the elbow of an "L" ambush, but they were quite helpful and effective at getting the job done. The "Ghost in the Machine" video looks like an effective recruiting tool (probably a class project at the psyops school), but, true to form, puts a heavy dose of lipstick on that mammal.

The fact that neither of you have worked with PSYOP as you stated 10 minutes in, pronounce the S, and don’t know they go to language school with SF and CA in their ARSOF pipelines, tells me you’re not as informed as you could be to make this video. It is a recruiting video so…..
The PSYOP A&S is looking for something different than ODAs. They should it’s a different mission. So it is going to be different. Both have physical components but the intellect, critical thinking, communication skills, are critical to the success of the PSYOP mission. Wouldn’t you want to assess those? Someone told me recently they select less of a percentage of those who try than the other ARSOF tribes. It’s highly selective. That was NOT the case before A&S. PSYOP is aging out of those “special” types. It’s an improving branch in the Army. Is it possible your experience is out of date?
There’s a great deal more to PSYOP than working with ODAs and AOBs. You’re assuming they’re tactically focused like an ODA. The overwhelming majority are not because that’s not that particular mission. There’s so much more to PSYOP and it’s wickedly misunderstood across the SF community. PSYOP units are in countries where no other SOF are on missions and working out of embassies living on the economy. They are moving about the population in many of those countries. They must understand the target audiences. So I understand SF soldiers wouldn’t be aware of those missions but they do exist and are independent of Special Forces and AOBs.
There are many PSYOP forces integrated into other SOF elements but to your point, the PSYOP forces are not on their own conducting CQB. I think in the minds of the creator, they were trying to show integration but likely it is interpreted as unilateral operations. Not the case nor would it ever be the case. I’m unsure how many non-SOF Soldiers interpreted that snippet the way that you guys did. They don’t know anything about it. But I see why you did. Valid point.
Yes, much of their work is digitally based. They rely heavily on computers. They have to. It’s a complicated job. There’s production involved. They use many forms of media. You pointed out social media. That’s true. But there’s satellite TV, internet based TV, radio in all forms, print (much less now), cyber enabled….. wherever the target audience is, that’s where they’ll engage them. Thin slicing the entire PSYOP mission to leaflets and loudspeakers is an overly simplistic over representation of only tactical PSYOP. Reaching TAs can be tough in austere environments. That said, in those environments there’s an SF O5 or O6 directing them to reach those TAs and approving those operations and likely the products too. Leaflets may be the only way. Check history. They’ve used them to great effect in many conflicts. It’ll always be in the tool kit.
I get it. People think of SOF and assume commandos. The ability to integrate into commando like SOF units is critical and they need to be prepared to do that. They also need to be prepared to go to embassies in countries where they may be the only SOF element, countries where they’re training partners to do PSYOP at the national level, plus many other ways in which they’re not tactically employed and thus next to ODAs.
I appreciate your attempt to provide a reality check and reduce any expectation gap, but you may have actually introduced more incorrect information than the video presented. Remember, the TA are non-SOF and civilian recruits so the nuances you’re pointing out are meaningless to that TA. Let’s be real. When are recruiting videos 100% accurate? The Army recruiting videos are far more misleading but we wouldn’t know that if we were civilians. The Army presents an attractive product to civilians in an attempt to fill the ranks to protect our country. It’s reasonable to think PSYOP would do the same to fill their ranks.

First of all, thank you for your service.
I have been in the PSYOP community now for 19 years, deployed multiple times for the GWOT as a 37F.
During my second tour, I was medically evacuated out of Iraq and sent home to Bragg for surgery and rehabilitation for combat injuries, and then back to Iraq a year and a half later.
I can tell you that you have mis-characterized and displayed a lot of misunderstandings about what PSYOP is, what PSYOP does, and at what levels.
Most of your criticisms may apply to the Strategic levels of Psychological Operations (which the video intimates), but not that much at the Operational level, and not at all at the Tactical evel. The level I, and others, participated in over three combat tours in Iraq.
The interpretations you Gentlemen made about the ‘shadows’, the ‘close quarter combat’ and ‘tip of spear’ is totally misunderstood.
As a tactical PSYOP Team leader, I spent 9 1/2 to 10 months out of a 12 month tour in the cities, villages, regions of Iraq and imbedded with the people we were trying to influence; friendly, neutrals, or enemy.
Many of the images that people saw on the news during the Syrian war that influenced and changed a lot of the thinking, and actions of not only individuals but governments, was due to PSYOP at the strategic level, working through operational and tactical PSYOP.

Think you guys are looking at this from a jaded and MIL perspective.
I’m prior service, 8 year grunt and in no way was I getting the impression they were signaling you’ll be a DA force.
How could you overlook the most apparent things and not speak on them? The rising threat in the east is factual.
Also they’re not implying they created riots, they’re asking you question who did. They’re alluding to a war behind the scenes being fought and it’s almost very Q like.
This is not an accident this was released at this time. Take off the MIL glasses and realize this isn’t a recruitment video. It’s a memo.

It amazes me how so many military personnel and civilians are confident that they understand or know the capabilities of PSYOP and how they are applied. The analyses and critiques presented in this video are largely baseless, and seem to be yet just another technique used to portray SOF missions as only conducted effectively by SF; that any other SOF branch is considered less robust, less capable, simplistic and less serious. In fact, PSYOP can and should be inserted at the outset in most doctrinally defined SOF missions, and not later in some "support" capacity. PSYOP, tip of the spear, most certainly as a viable means to avoid conflict. This is not a zero sum game...that SOF capabilities applied by an unique and multifaceted branch detract or negate that of another. However, the commentary certainly points to that perspective. It is erroneous to try to compare one SOF branch with another, or try to critique another SOF branch objectively without having a sound understanding of another. SF are organized and applied completely different than PSYOP forces and capabilities. The commentators fail to understand this fundamental aspect of SOF. PSYOP missions to be conducted effectively and successfully require multiple disciplines and approaches in a complex orchestrated way applying multiple disciplines. PSYOP deal exclusively with human behaviors, in distinct cultures and across the entire operational spectrum. As such, PSYOP missions are unique. If these two gentlemen bothered to at least scan PSYOP doctrine, they would immediately become more aware. PSYOP, in their application, are nowhere akin to a SF A Team conducting missions autonomously in a given AO. That is clear. However, what these gentlemen fail to realize, is that PSYOP missions are executed by a variety of noticeably distinct assets including boots on the ground to those in the shadows, and in varying locations in conjunction with high tech and multimedia resources to achieve psychological objectives approved at the highest levels. Many are unaware of these facts. PSYOP require varying disciplines and abilities that are largely unrelated or disparate, making them challenging to plan and execute effectively. Again, a perusal of the doctrine would have been helpful for these gentlemen. PSYOP can be as simple and as complex as necessary, and are only constrained by intellectual prowess, sound imagination and varied resources. The weapon systems of PSYOP are typically organic and are always devised to uniquely fit a specific mission, or they can be obtained opportunistically from other military or official civilian sources. PSYOP in preparation of the battlespace, during conflict and post conflict require a fairly wide-ranging collective effort in their application...much more broadly multidisciplined at multiple levels than merely a team with boots on the ground, as these gentlemen seem to think. While PSYOPers are working in cyberspace, others may be applying tactical and operational level techniques to effect numerous objectives concurrently and/or in a multi-phased approach. So, in my estimation, every frame of this video accurately captures, the collective aspects of this robust and critical discipline and branch. PSYOP are and will always be difficult to understand or grasp as a military capability. That's what makes it totally bad ass and dope, if I may be permitted to parrot the terms used by these two gentlemen.

I enjoyed reading this reply. It was well written and thoughtful. PSYOP is clearly different and distinct from SF and CA. The reviewers perfectly describe the experience of "some" PSYOP soldiers, but not all. They admit they had limited exposure to PSYOP professionals; so they may not be fully aware of the board range of PSYOP and CA capabilities, missions, and history. While some PSYOP soldiers may be fortunate enough to have a low risk experience as described, that is not the case for all. PSYOP and CA missions have casualties. For example, Civil Affairs soldiers make up only about five percent of the U.S. Army's reserve forces, however they accounted for 23 percent of the combat fatalities among reservists in Iraq and Afghanistan alone, stated by the Center for Public Integrity. CA and PSYOP experience are listed as Desired Qualifications for those interested in continuing to serve their country as a Specialized Skills Officer at an intelligence agency. See this role as usajobs.gov to learn more.

A lot of people will just focus in on elite units like green berets, but I’m sure you guys would be the first to admit y’all couldn’t do you job with out the rest of the military doing their job. It’s really cool to see how each part supports and is supported by another part

I think something that gets a little lost in translation is that if you knew all of the specifics behind the daily operations of Psyops, then that kind of defeats the purpose. You're not supposed to know. You're not supposed to understand. You're seeing what they want you to see, and there is always more going on behind the scenes, which is blurred behind the lines of politics.

Hey psyop guy here had a phenomenal time working with my ODA partners down range. They were professional, mature, and realized in that part of the world, they were not the main effort. Neither was Psyop, it was actually CA. But PO was reinforcing and SF was really quite tertiary. Fortunately, we had no ego about it. Neither did CA, or the SF. And the team was made up of senior guys with several rotations through GWOT.
In my experience, the SF guys that are so confrontational and gatekeeping the “SOF” title are the ones just out of the schoolhouse who grew up playing call of duty and listening to stories of GBs in Iraq and Afghanistan doing CQB and CT ops. Nowadays, SF is trying to get back to their roots, which is unconventional warfare. Because they collectively ignored that function and the Army decided to retool them as CT guys, the SFAB was created and essentially took their job. SF is going through an identity crisis. But like I said, the mature and intelligent SF guys understand the idea of force multipliers, and look at CA and PO as equal partners in trying to accomplish the mission.
I think it was about 10-ish minutes into the video where these guys said they both never worked with PSYOP before. So…maybe preface your video with that?
I agree this video could appear misleading. But Psyopers look at the full spectrum of high-intensity, LSCO and low-intensity operations and plan to influence populations based off all those factors. We don’t typically do a single “operation” and consider success or failure on the back end-our efforts are multigenerational and will take years to see results. If you don’t believe me, just look at China and Russia and our own CIA who do exactly this.
A complete misunderstanding of what psyop is, terrible characterizations based off absolute idiot psyoppers that some guys have worked with, and a constant shooting ourselves in the foot by allowing ourselves to be run by SF leadership who refuse to learn about it. That’s why we are seen the way we are today.

Have a cousin whose son did 30 years in psyops. He retired 3 years ago. He spent a lot out of country, especially during the campaigns against ISIS and al quida (the spelling is probably wrong). He couldn't talk about what he did, but he had a haunted look the last few years - and he was a Major, so he was a long way from kicking down doors and clearing room. But I guess he cleared his share of rooms, just mentally.
Make no mistake- psyops is used against allies as well as enemies. Are they thinking about pulling out of the war? Psyops is there as well as diplomacy. And as far as changing an ally"s mind about dropping out- you can get people rioting about nearly anything with social media. Nothing changes a country's mind like citizens rioting.

The 4 man HQ section was assigned to the BN HQ and and did “staff stuff”, supporting the teams and missions. While my guys did not “stack”, they did set up for squirters. They did get into TIC’s and were shoulder to shoulder with long tabbers.

I was in PSYOPS a long time ago bacj before there was an MOS but an identifier that was tacted to your Mos identifer F. Joinded as a 96B into the army (Intell Analyast) oxymoron if ever there was one. Wanted to enlist as a 19D at 17 but dad being a infantry and combat engineer from WW2 ,Korea and Vietneam (served in WW2 but not oversea) in combat a few years in Korea and 2 tours Vietnam. R.I.P. dad) Would not let me enlist in the army let alone combat arms so had to pick a non combat MOS, hence 96B. Ini Intell school. WO Green in charge of the 96B branch in Huachuca advised us the worst assignment for a 96B was a PSYOP unit. But said there is only one so no need to worry. (he did not tell us Ft Bragg was where they are at which is where I enlisted to go because my sister was there with her husband who was a SF medic in 5th GP, her idea so she can have family around since we are from CA) I got to Ft Bragg in Dec of 80 after basci and AIT. At 19th Replcement got my orders for 6th PSYOP Bn. I was ready to desert at that time with WO Greens tales of PSYOPS. Eventually went to psyop school, got the F designator as well as the Papa for jump school, was a 96B2PF. Evenually INVOLUNATRILY reclassified into a 96FP) 96F,, the first assigned MOS for PSYOP spciallist. And yea,, not what you do on that vid. But bear in mind in 80-88 PSYOPS was treated like a red headed step chld back then by JFKSWC (with very VERY little funding for PSYOPS) before becoming SOC. SOC did'nt want 4th POG or 96th CA but was stuck with them because no one else knew where to put them and SOCOM had the lowest voice to deny wanting them. But all in all, hey it was 8 years to my country I gave ,maybe a bit begrudginly not doing what I wanted to initially but would all over again. Sorry for my long rambling
