Somi Khongsai, the sister of Kamlengsat Khongsai is inconsolable. Kamlengsat, a resident of Bongjang village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district was laid to rest on April 13, 2024 during a ‘symbolic burial’ at the Martyrs’ Cemetery. Kamlengsat and Kamminlal Lupheng were the two volunteers who died defending Phailengmol village but their bodies still remain missing.
Somi, along with many others, had gathered at Martyrs' Cemetery in Phaijang on June 4 to mark 14 months of violence in Manipur and pay tribute to those who lost their lives. This day is observed as Remembrance Day by the Kuki-Zo community.
Prominent Kuki-Zo leaders and members of various civil society organizations, such as the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), the Kuki Women's Union Sadar Hills and Thadou Inpi Sadar Hills, took part in the event.
Along with prayers and condolences, the day also saw intensified calls for a separate administration for the Kuki-Zo people. Slogans such as "We Demand Separate Administration" also echoed during the ceremony.
While no official shutdown was declared, businesses and schools, both private and government, throughout the district, remained closed to express solidarity with the people of the community.
