These tutorials aren't just great for campers, but college students.....using a survival fire stove like that is a great replacement for the stoves dorm rooms lack. Also, making those meal packs is an amazing idea!!...You can save money this way and not have to order out or use your food card all the time. Thank you for these ideas!!

I like your relaxed perspective on the topic. So many people are hardcore about how and what preparedness involves. This was simple, to the point and no show-boating. Thanks!

You can fit 5 ESBIT fuel tabs inside the stove by alternating orientation.
3 side by side. Foil down, foil up, foil down.
    Then 2 end to end.

Great video PackRat556! You really have some great ideas to share and you do a great job of demonstrating this type of stuff. I've carried and often used the Esbit stove in the outdoors for a couple decades. They work great but I always advise folks to bring some type of windscreen along with this type of stove. A windscreen can easily be fashioned from a disposable aluminum pie crust pan, a piece of flashing, or even just a couple layers of foil. That goes for all outdoor stoves really.

Thanks for taking the time to make this.
I have a few english army stoves like this but they also have a holder for the alluminium water bottle cup which sits ontop of the stove- which means its less likely to fall off during wind or small knocks.A nice extra but I guess if its that windy, you probably wont be able to light it anway! :)

They are a great design and make the standard 1 quart canteen a much more attractive option w/ the cover. For the US forces, these cups are used by many. Thanks for watching and hope you continue to enjoy that cup!

Cool Vid. I use an Esbit pocket stove as part of my survival kit. Best thing about it is that you can simply push it in your back pocket (fuel included). And if you run out of tablets it's still functional as a balanced pot stand in the centre of a fire if needs be. Just to mention here - if your British and having trouble finding Esbit, i got mine at a website called Cadet Direct for £5. Enjoy your vids dude, keep em coming.

I ordered an Esbit stove with 20 fuel tablets yesterday: £11.99 including postage. I did extensive research before deciding on this item. It's very cheap, very basic, easy to use, lightweight and takes up minimal space in the bug-out bag !

You're right, sometimes a canteen cup can be a little tricky. I like the canteen cup better than most camp pots for a couple of reasons, the first is because I use the 1 qt. military canteen anyway, so it takes up no extra space. Second, I like the depth of the cup. The Esbit is flexible because there are a couple of different ways to set it up fit different style mess tins. Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • @PackRat556

I also break mine apart before cooking. The only reason I didn't break them first is because when broken, the noodles can sometimes be sharp and can puncture the vacuum pack. This would probably be rare. Give it a try, it may work just fine. Thanks for your interest and support!

I have the Stanley Adventure cookware, which I use with the Esbit stove. So that the bottom of the Stanley "pot" fits securely on the Esbit stove, I open the Esbit fully (so that the sides are 90 degrees to the base}, and lay two round rods across the stove, held by the grooves that are cut into the sides of the stove. At their ends, the rods are bent down at 90 degrees so they won't slip off the grooves. From a side view, a rod so bent will look like a giant staple, as in a staple machine/gun.

Hi Packrat great vid as always just a hint to allwatching this one i have had to use this in Esbit stove in outside conditions and it will take easily 2 Esbit cubes to get a real rolling boil if you just need to warm water use one if you really need boiling you will use 2 and if any wind you will want to use a wind blocker

Good video. I have used the Esbit stove for a long time and it works pretty good, however in cold and windy weather you will have to add a windscreen and may have to add additional fuel tabs to get a boil. I will have to try that meal sometime.

The TUNA was prevacuum sealed in a foil pack from the manufacturer. It is the Walmart "Great Value" brand. I'm sure tuna would spoil if you vacuum sealed it AND didn't freeze it.
I tried those Shrimp Noodles at work last week by themselves. I have to say, it was beyond NASTY. Pack I had might have been really old but still, it will be awhile before I try them again!
    Good Video.

The hexamine tablets are made for the civilian version of the British Army Hexamine Stove, which is basicly a larger Esbit Stove that measures roughly 4'x5'x1'.
Much larger than the esbit but much more stable for larger pots, and cheaper here in the UK due to the Hexamine Stoves being british army issue and the Esbit Stoves being German Army Issue.

You got that right! Esbit cubes are DARNED hard to light! One paper match usually won't do it even under ideal conditions. You need to have a fairly intense, long burning flame to start the darned things. Personally, I don't like them. I don't like the residue they leave on the bottom of my pot or cup either.

I've used them for years and rarely get one to boil 2 cups of water except in a closed space like a garage . In the wild any little breeze will push the flame sideways reducing efficiency. The new packaging has changed to reveal the more accurate "heat" water for tea and coffee. And with Ramen the seasoning goes in the hot water and then the noodles. Less stirring .

    Good Thought!
I checked but the packaging on the Esbit cubes doesn't really take any extra space so in or out of the wrapper, only 4 will fit. I choose to keep mine in the wrapper so it keeps the cubes dry and together, (no crumbs from shifting in the stove). That way it doesn't get into any food items that might be in the pack as well. Take Care.

If you're going to make sandwiches from the remaining tuna, consider vacuum sealing mayonnaise. It has a bad rep but truth is the acid content (low pH) of mayonnaise actually inhibits bacterial growth, according the manufacturer. Yes, EVEN with egg yolks in it. Most salmonella cases were due to the ADDITIONS to mayonnaise like chicken meat or boiled eggs or steeping tuna, not the mayonnaise itself. I've had a jar of it on the kitchen table for weeks at 90F degrees just to test the company claims, and it never made me sick even once, not even after opened, nor did it spoil or go rancid. The acid pH held up great. I was pleasantly surprised, but being biochemistry based, I determined the science checked out in the field. They just can't tell you that for legal reasons.
You also get greater heat from standing two or more esbits up on long edge, or breaking one in half and standing halves facing each other. Flames do not burn fuel but the FUMES coming off fuel after it's been heated. Then, as fire from fumes build temperature, the fuel itself begins to be consumed. If you doubt it, look at a camp fire. The flames seem to dance above the wood, catching gases that come off the logs, and radiating heat back toward the log until all the combustibles are gone, and only char is left. Likewise, steel wool burns - an intuitively noncombustable material - because the metal threads bounce heat back and forth, amplifying radiance, until combustion occurs from the carbon fumes from the steel. What you have left is thin black tendrils when the flame goes out. Doubt that too? Then look at steel and flint. How does that even work? The spark comes from igniting carbon from the back of your steel knife (which btw makes it a good idea NOT to use your knife exclusively for lighting fires) . The upshot of this is: This principle is why standing charcoal and esbit chips on edge with a space between to bounce heat back and forth is a more efficient flame. The metal case further radiates heat back to the flame, fortifying it even more. Just saying.

That was a big meal! Were you able to boil the two cups of water with one Esbit cube? I've never been able to do it, particularly with an uncovered canteen cup. It always takes more than one full cube to boil two cups of water. I went from an Esbit stove to an alcohol stove because I don't like the crap Esbit cubes leave on the outside bottom of your pot or cup. Have you noticed this problem? How do you get it off? GREAT video! Thank you!

Esbit stoves can be used solely with wood as well.
Wood chips are obviously the choice wood fuel as they can be packed in the stove more tightly but honestly anything will do to sufficiently cook your food.
Another thing to note is it may require continuous loading the longer the food takes to cook.
