One of the most remarkable bonsai displays I have observed was a very large specimen which shaded a human figure (perhaps ceramic) who was working on a tiny bonsai such as this.
Your videos are very helpful, thank you for the uploads! I just got ahold of a Cotoneaster Apiculitus today, at a nearby nursery…after searching half a dozen more! I’ll probably have to order the microphyllus variety online though. Pyracanthas seem like they’d make awesome flowering bonsai, gonna find one of those next!
Good stuff - Picked up 2 of these and really excited to have them. Question for you - Can the mame size be used for accent plants. Really like the look and the berries would really pop.
Ok I'm on the site. All the other growers and sellers have sold out of anything smaller than a gallon. Very popular all the sudden! This is the exact size I'm looking for. You nailed it.
It was never nurrsery stock - we propagated it from an older tree - you can see at about the 1 minute mark the cutting flat. Then potted it into the container and wired it.
What substrate do you use for these? How often do they need to be watered? After seeing this I think I’m going to try striking some cuttings next spring and trying to create one or two. Thanks very much for the video.
Hi Bob, We sift the tiny particles out of our bonsai soil and use them. The soil is about 2/3 akadama and the rest is a mix of pumice and lava at 1/16" size or so. Dust is removed. Watering is 1-2 times per day even here in San Francisco with cool weather. We'll be sharing some more details in upcoming videos about growing them out. Thanks for your comment!
Thanks, glad you like it. We need to update the FAQ page. I keep getting orders for small plants on Thursdays and Fridays, but they don't ship until Monday because we're concerned about them sitting in the USPS facility over the weekend....all of which is to say in your case - expect the order to ship on Monday. :-)
We actually have these rooting themselves sometimes into their neighboring pots. A shoot will arch over and then you have multiple plants in the same pot, or one plant in multiple pots. Yes!, ground layering is a good option!
If you mean the small stainless scissor-style wire cutters,I believe they are number 9., but you can get them from Bonsai tonight: store.bonsaitonight.com/collections/bonsai-tools/products/wire-cutters?variant=8965157027901 If you mean the regular small scissors - they are Kaneshin, available in our store on bonsaify.com
Actually the ones I'm talking about are shown around the 1min mark in the video during the sped up footage of you potting the cotoneaster cuttings you didn't actually use them in the video. Just saw them laying on your turn table. They looked like masakuni but I may be wrong in assuming so.
Ah, yes, there is a Masakuni scissor there. I don't recall the number, but I'm guessing the 228B or 202B. I don't know much about the numbering system, but it was the type you can sharpen while they are closed. Sadly they were stolen from my car last year :-(
Today I learned how to pronounce what I thought was "cotton easter" ^^
I called it that also for years. Another was poten tilla which I later realised was pronounced Po ten chila

Could you do a cutting video?

Sure can, I'd just imagine them having a slightly wilder look if you were using them as accents.

The one in the tall blue pot, do you have a video of its journey from nursery stock to the end product please?

Video nice
Does any operation need to be performed for flowering and fruiting?
Well, in our climate they seem to do it without much coaxing. But a good fertilizer regimen is always a good idea.
Great video! I just made an order. Looking forward to potting the up.

xin hỏi đó là giống cây gì vậy đẹp quá
the species is Cotoneaster microphyllus. :-)
Always inspiring!
Thanks Matt!
Cotoneaster also do natural ground layering (at least the horinzontalis). Did you try airlayers?

What model number is that pair of masakuni shears by chance No.202 or No.228?

You keep them indoor
Mostly outdoors. For propagation speed we use a greenhouse, but the tree in the thumbnail is kept outdoors.
Thanks for the shout out!
You bet!
So beautiful bonsai. Super
