Great video. As a former industrial cost estimator.... you have to add in the labor rate for two workmen, amortization of the mill and backhoe, blade sharpening, business taxes/insurance..... AND the fact this was a fantastically beautiful day with exceptional productivity. In the end you both made out like bandits but for a viable profession you would need all that hydraulic stuff like you said. For a backyard industry you can't beat a sawmill like the LT-15.
I was thinking the LT-45 would be better over the long haul. Primary investment is obviously higher, but able to be written off in the first year now. Am I out in left field?
It really makes sense to have my mill going again since lumber is at a all time high again because of the tarrifs!!! I cant wait to start sawing again.

I agree that disclosing raw numbers may not be a good idea. As a numbers guy and former contractor, I understand the costs of doing business and the many factors, but to the average consumer, it may bite you in the end as people tend to think your profitable days are unfair. In short, people get flakey when you profit. They tend to not see the hard work, the risk, the taxes, the equipment, the down time, etc. I hope you’re not overlooking that too. Best wishes to you!

A good flight instructor is not easy to find. Esp with the summer fire season coming up. I would say get as many flight hours in as you can. Great milling Jesse...have a great weekend guys....and 🐱
I know you are a busy guy Jesse, and will be for the foreseeable future, but if I may stick a thought into your head. Down the road when things are a little less hectic, maybe you should build a timber frame shed over the LT-15. You can then mill on demand regardless of the weather, and the fading light. As you are going to be on the grid, you could also convert the LT-15 to electric, which is a lot less maintenance and a lot quieter. With a covered lit milling area you could mill when you have time. Also remember the timber frame shed can be built in such a way that you can easily have overhead capacity to move logs on and off of the mill, a sliding gantry of sorts. If you make it much less back breaking work, then you can work the mill for a very long time to come, it can be a very profitable side income. It is obvious to me that you have put the time in and figured it out, so this is another skill that you can use to provide for your family, and if it is set up well, you can do it literally for a few hours here and there when you have the time. Just some thoughts that I thought I would share. I'm going to be in your neck of the woods for a while in June, I'd love to come by and lend a hand for a day or two in whatever you are up to, I'll even stack firewood if that helps. I'd also like to shake your and Alyssa's hand and say thanks for all of the enjoyable content. Cheers from Tokyo
My brother ran a trailer mounted Woodmizer (logs up to 16' long) with hydraulics for many years. Having the hydraulics is a BIG time saver, and makes it an easy 1 man operation. (Log loader, Turner, Leveler, board clamper. The Log turner also substituted for the clamps we see them screwing in on the back side to hold the log in position so it wont roll while your cutting it) If you have the people and don't have a time crunch, you can get away with out hydraulics. He used his in a business, cutting logs typically 3-4 days a week, having the hydraulics would turn what might be a 6 hour job into a 2 hour job. He might be atypical, but AFAIR he rarely had hydraulic problems.
I own 4 saw mills, two rentals LT15's and two LT35's employed in my yard I've had no hydraulic issues at all in 5 years on the LT35's. The LT15's have no hyd's just because they are rentals and go through lots of abuse with unskilled operators. The only draw back with the larger mills is the 30 min set up time/adjustments /leveling. I would never rent out the larger mills , just to many moving parts and a good potential for injury for the user.

A thousand Dollars sounds good to me , but theres even more money than that in the remaining logs Sitka , Hemlock , white , red pine and other soft wood logs quartersawn can yield thousands of Dollars per foot board length and sold to the musical instrument manufacturers , and the thickness required is something you are already capable of doing , and some if not all your logs are air dried which is even more valuable , i admire all your hard work

Are you planning on doing some tomatoes this year? I heard that you can get a bale of straw and put a little soil in the bale where you want your tomatoes. They love it and do really well. Up side is the straw is valuable compost material and a great insulation. You can pick off the little shoots of the tomatoes that grow out between the main stem and the main branching ones, and plant them as they will grow into new plants. Susan Lee....That is a good solution for a raised garden. One thing that is important to remember, is when you get the bales, be sure you are getting hay. Straw bales are much too coarse and lack nutrition. Straw bales have a lot of stalks and rough material that takes a very long time to compost. Straw would make a good base, but hay is what you want for the plantings.

I would use backhoe between mill and logs also a strap to put slabs on then pic up in a bundle move them back to fire wood pile and saw em up there. Easer to saw while hanging in bundle. Move logs left to right on mill.

According to your figures and math .. your expenses were about $4K and roughly $4K material output (rough sawn not dressed). It's a great project but not because it saves cash.

May be a good way to also use sawdust as an organic add. A long tarp just pull it and dump in raised beds. Worm food making castings in the bed. Add loads of coffee grounds and magic garden for life. Cant overfeed worm castings. They balance needs. Every trip for coffee bring home a bin and make money $1.00 a pound easy in fertilizer and compost savings.
The key to your "profitability" calcs (which could be argued with on several fronts, which I am not doing, though I hope you took into account blades and fuel) is that *you are using the lumber yourself.* Aka "Owner-user." You would have to go buy that lumber with green cash. To earn that green cash, you'd have to earn money, pay taxes on it, then go buy your wood with the remainder. If instead you were setting up a stand by the side of the road and selling the finished boards it would be a different story. Still, money that you did/do not have to spend is indeed powerful money. If you’re going to keep milling I would suggest putting down permanent concrete pilings so the sawmill doesn’t move. Maybe even running power for a compressor. IMHO😃

How much does it cost to have the trailer load milled into tongue and groove planks? And then how much does it cost to have them kiln dried?

Went back and watched it again twice. Jess never mentioned the cost of the bandsaw blades or gas for the saw. Only cost of logs as raw material.
Just an idea you have the sawmill you have all that leftover scrapboards you can save them for building your cabinets for your home,you have the tools inside corner support on cabinets. That sawmill is the best investment you 2 have got have fun making money with that mill . Just an idea

Sharpens with a jig saving a new 15 dollar blade every log. Sharpen vs change. At 63 with a bearer you can do 1000 board ft per hour. No deck mess log sits in cross pieces. Take saw to big trees carry boards saves freight.
well $1000 in kiln dried lumber from store but you have not dried have not factored in cost of logs and blades.
