- Sega recently announced that they were offering a new Sega Genesis Collection for the PS4, Steam, and Xbox One. It will feature over 50 classic games, including some new additions, as well as a few interesting omissions(Sonic 3). In this video, I talk about the differences so far from the 2009 release on Xbox 360/PS3 with the games included , what bonus material I hope it includes, as well as my thoughts on Sega releasing yet another Genesis compilation. The new compilation will be released May 29th.

This is the first time I've gained interest in buying a ps4 (Not that I can afford it.). I'm perfectly happy w/ my ps3 and Gen Sonic Collection. Online play will be possible and could FINALLY have me playing co-op on SoR2, Golden Axe, Columns... Being a Retro Gamer leaves most of us playing 2 Player games alone. This is a dream come true. Hopefully it'll still be around when I can afford it.

Eh, I grew up playing retro systems and I still collect for them on a regular basis, but PS4 has plenty of games to make it worth buying.
Rayza Ramon I still play my PS3. I’m playing Kingdoms of Amalur again. It’s my number 1 pick to be on Nintendo Switch. It won’t happen but I can hope.

Big issue with this idea is that Sega doesn't own the rights to most of these games. Snatcher is owned by Konami for example. Even games that Sega made they no longer have the rights to publish. Games like Star Wars for the 32X. Really for what few 32X games there were and how few were published by Sega. An arcade collection would likely be better.

I would love a Konami or Capcom compilation on the current consoles
Capcom has a Disney Afternoon, Street Fighter and Mega Man collection for current consoles. Mega Man was a bit of a rip off. They were able to put the first 8 games, plus two bonus games onto one PS2 game. Yet, the PS4 collection is split into two games. You do get Mega Man 9 & 10 this time though.

Wouldn’t it be a cool incentive to classic video game collections like this, to have unlockable classic tv commercials from back in the day... how nostalgic would it be to view the old tv commercials we use to see back in the day
I would rather have a SEGA CD, SEGA 32X, or SEGA Saturn collection.

I find it amazing that we now have the technology, the further advancements in emulation, etc.. and yet the older arcade/classic compilations from the PS2/Xbox (notable examples - Midway Arcade Treasures Trilogy, the previous mentioned Sonic's Genesis Collection, Atari Anthology, Intelivision Lives!) were all packed with loads of games & bonus features, dwarf these modern packs. Either its the amount of games that are less of their older cousins, lacking any bonus features, lackluster presentation, or just piece mealing per game (the Hamster Arcade Archives with its barebones setup & no online play). It's just really sad & depressing to see this.
The new Genesis collection could have more extras like the 2009 release. We will have to wait to see. Agree that more and more compilations these days typically are more expensive, have less games, and are often a quick cash grab on old game libraries. The ones that get it right(Rare Replay) stand out.
whyemceeay, I was hoping the Mario All Stars anniversary from a few years back would've included the Mario Land games as well, plus Mario World.
I read somewhere that Sega have the rights to the Thunderforce games,please Sega make 2 to 4 unlockables on this compilation . :D

I'm pretty sure SOR 2 on the PS3 was online too, Gunstar Heroes was as well, and online is free on the PS3, i aint paying for online on ps4, not worth it for me.

RoS is an excellent, very underappreciated 16-bit side scroller, because it's not *cough Castlevania* cough even though it has more fluid, intricate and challenging gameplay. But Nintendo fanboys will be fanboys. And Shinobi 3 comes out and kills it again with more gameplay mechanics, which is also ignored next to Mega man and Metroid, go figure...
How about a 'Sega Arcade' collection? I've got 'Space Harrier', 'Altered Beast', 'Super Hang On', 'Golden Axe', and 'Zaxxon' for The Virtual Console, and I'm still waiting for 'Out Run', and 'After Burner' to become available. Heck, I also want to see 'Golden Axe: Revenge Of Death Adder' show up on a compilation, or a download because that's NEVER been on a console.
Ultimate Capcom Classics for PS2 is by far the best compilation!
I was expecting this since i bought a PS4 and realized i couldnt play that old collection for the ps3/xbox 360. I dream come true.
At first when I saw that most of the games from the last compilation are on the new one with only a few new games I thought meh it's not much different. But when I actually sat and thought about it and looking back to what the 1st one actually had with all the unlockables like interviews, Master System/Arcade games it got me thinking about the possibility of even better unlockables on this new one. That coupled with online co-op and it quickly went from a meh to a win, win and day 1 one buy.

I am a sucker for these collections, love them so much, will be day one purchase for sure. Would LOVE to see a master system collection. They have genesis collections on every system since ps2, psp, etc, and sometimes drop a SMS game in. But a dedicated SMS collection? Action Fighter, Rambo, Shinobi, My Hero, Fantasy Zone, the list goes on and on. They could easily get 50 great games on that. And as for switch, the smart thing for sega to do is release to PS4/Xbox1, then release Digital on Switch, the release Physical on switch. That way the get a bunch of us buying it 3x.

The steam version is out, and you can get Sonic 3 & Knuckles on that version for now
The worst part is that those missing games are already on the Steam version of Genesis Classics. It wouldn't be surprising if they offered them later as paid DLC. That was the concept behind the original Steam version, anyway. (A-la-carte, Genesis only "virtual console".) Hopefully, they'll open the doors for 3rd party games.

This Sega s version of a home mini console. And they can update it for every console and sell more with less production cost. Great idea. Save states NOW!! A must own even if you only play a handfull of the games.
Rare Replay was great... 3 hours later when 85% of the games not on the disc were done downloading...
I know it's not retro but The Orange Box is a great collection of games too.
Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection had 48 games. So this one only has two more unless there are hidden games.

John, I have the Xbox 360 Sega compilation and love the Rare compilation on Xbox one; however, the new compilation? I would rather get the arcade versions( if available)or available 32x versions instead of simply Genesis versions. Like you, I have all the retro consoles and rather run via the original machine then emulate, but may jump on this. Also, regarding online play via two player at once games, this would be cool. I just hope they do not alter the original games and provide a second player in games that originally were designed for one player at a time play...another great vid thank you.

This compilation sounds amazing, I wish they'd release it for switch also. It would be amazing to have this game library on the go.
The deal breaker for me is the first Phantasy Star game. I've always wanted to get into the series and will be starting with the first one. Phantasy Star 2-4 will be on this compilation but is also on PC. The first game in the series is only available on Wii virtual console for another few days and in the first compilation.
I really hope they make this available on PSN because my disc reader stopped working.

I have all these games on my PSP and Rpi plus a lot more. I would however love a compilation like this if it was LOADED with games... Like say 250 at least.
13 additional Genesis games, not 10 additional Genesis games.
36 of the 40 Genesis games from Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection are carried forward (Ecco 1 & 2 are also cut), three of the games omitted on the 2009 collection that had made the cut for the earlier Sega Genesis Collection are restored, and 14 addition Genesis games that are new to to these Genesis compilations have been added.
In essence, every Genesis game from those two compilations except Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Ecco the Dolphin, Ecco the Dolphin 2, and Ecco Jr (That last one was on Sega Genesis Collection but didn't make the cut for Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection).

Honestly at this point we need a Sega Saturn/AM2 Arcade collection. I'm pretty sure even the Switch can handle the emulation for it. Unfortunately until AT Games makes a perfect or perfect plus clone, Sega will continue to pump these out.
Isn't the Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection backwards compatible on Xbox one?
I'm not that excited, because I own the previous collection already and I downloaded those wonderboy games, revenge of shinobi, toejam & earl games and gunstar heroes to my ps3 years ago when they were like 2€/game. For those, who haven't played the previous collection or don't own the last-gen consoles, this is pretty great. So what I'm saying is that I really hope that Sega will put something to that disk that we have never seen before on current consoles. For example the 360 has great conversions of Radiant Silvergun, Nights and Guardian Heroes, so If you could unlock something like the whole Panzer Dragoon Trilogy or Shining Force 3 or Burning Rangers (with improved frame-rate please), that would be awesome. Or if they wanna stay retro, put some Sega CD & 32x unlockables :) Bottom line; please give us old fans something too!!

They should just come out with a mega collection of 100 best games for Sega .
Perhaps we don’t “need” it, but it certainly won’t stop them from releasing it... Heck, it certainly hasn’t stopped Midway/WB Games from releasing the Midway Arcade Collections, first on PS1, then PS2/Xbox/GameCube, then Xbox360/PS3, and then PS4/Xbox ONE/ Wii U (via the LEGO Dimensions Midway Arcade add-on pack).
Anyway, given the current state of modern gaming, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve held a few highly sought after games for release as DLC down the road.
Not everyone has enough space for more than one console so it’s nice to have on PS4
I feel if they’re gonna do another collection with basically the same games as the last one, it should at least be on Switch. Already can play it on Xbox or PlayStation.
The online play is not a selling point to me. But I always thought the original release was a fantastic compilation. I have it for the 360 and still would like to get it for my PS3. Mainly I like the Playstation controllers better. Anyway I think it would be great if they put some rare and or expensive titles like Turtles Hyperstone Heist or Castlevania Bloodlines. etc... Overall though if I ever got a PS4, I would probably consider getting the newly released one.

Hi John! Another fantastic video sir! I'm frustrated with Sega! I wish they would release their 80's arcade catalog and their System 32 games! Between the Sonic's collection that you mentioned and the Wonder Boy games being backward compatible along with Revenge of Shinobi from a previous release on the 360 and Gunstar Heroes being backward compatible,this collection is somewhat disappointing. Hopefully this is just the beginning of what's coming from Sega! The Thunderforce series would be a dream come true! Cheers!

Yeah, we needed another collection. However not having Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles is baffling. Not having the Thunder Force games is disappointing and weird too because they acquired Technosoft's IPs which include Thunder Force. I highly doubt they'll ever do a Thunder Force VII or a dedicated Thunder Force collection. So the least they can do is add the Genesis Thunder Force games into all Genesis collections going forward.

We need a Sega CD and Sega Saturn Collection
I'd like to see from this generation a Sega Saturn collection: Panzer Dragoon series, Virtua series (Cop, Fighter, On, and Racer), Nights into Dreams and Dayota USA Netplay, and Guardian/Gunstar Heroes. So 15 saturn games on a collection.
The previous Genesis collection didn't have good screen filters, I am hoping this one has a great scanline CRT filter; that justifies it for me all by itself, I hate that super sharp pixel look on HD displays.
Landstalker is still my favorite game of all time.
YES But one with All the games on... The Games are small enough to fit on one compilation Disc... Imagine all the impossible to find SHMUPS on one disc!!!!
Considering how Xbox One can play Xbox 360 (as well as OG Xbox) games, perhaps SEGA would've saved themselves the trouble & just allowed the 360 version to become playable on Xbox One. The extra games may not be on the 360 version, but they are available outside of it & most of them are even backwards-compatible on Xbox One, such as Gunstar Heroes. Everything else could've been offered separately, or in smaller collections.
To me, if you're gonna do a "modern" SEGA Genesis collection, you need to include 3rd party titles you could only get on SEGA Genesis, like Rocket Knight Adventures, Contra Hard Corps, Splatter House 2 & 3, etc.
Personally, I would much prefer they ported over SEGA arcade game collections to modern consoles. There's a lot of stuff that's still unavailable or hard to find. They should also sell some kind of light gun peripheral for all those light gun arcade games they could port. Cabela has made a pretty penny with those, so why can't SEGA?

Yes we do need a new one. The new one will natively run on xbox one or ps4. This is especially good, since ps4 has zero backwards compatibility.

I don't Owen the New gen , because of the loot boxes that was added to my favorite games, like wwe2k18, I only Owen , PS3 slim, xbox360 slim, dream-cast ( region 1) that plays cd-rs , over a 100 games , and the NES classic , 205 games.. with Sega Genesis , and snes , Turbo Graphics 16 , an NES, and one Nero game , Metal slug 2 , had to had one Nero , they take to much room.. that this was no brainier.. .. lol on my nes classic.. I love your videos ..

Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection had one MAJOR flaw: no lock-on support for Sonic & Knuckles! If Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles isn’t on the new one, this collection is dead to me.

Chuck McCormick I tried playing that on my Xbox one...not sure if it's because I'm using my Xbox..but I don't like it..is it better in original hardware? The control seems off.

I'll be buying this. Emulation doesn't really do it for me and my genesis collection is tiny.
I hope it has Gain Ground, it would be super cool if it has online multiplayer.
Re-releasing complilations on newer systems is nothing new. I'll treat this as a last-gen remaster, only buy it if there's graphical improvements. If they add a scanline filter then I'll probably replace my 360 copy with this one, especially if there's extra games. (Note: I also have the Steam version that uses a CRT look which works better up close on a computer monitor.)
Bio Hazard Battle is actually one of the better shooters on the console, idk why'd you say it's meh unless you haven't beaten it, could it be it's difficulty? Personal taste idk, but it's a very solid game and I'm really happy to see it on the collection. I hate how shooters are treated like they don't even exist. All it needs now is Thunder Force 3&4 and Musha. Stoked about Alien Soldier being there, a Top 3 16-bit game easily. Other than that I'd really add Monster World IV, and hoping Beyond Oasis is on there too.
Retro Soul I personally like Renovation titles better, Air Buster, etc. Just not my personal favorite. A person does not have to beat a game to have an opinion of it.
You're absolutely right, perhaps I should rephrase to haven't played very much. Suit yourself there's plenty of variety on the console to like/dislike certain games for sure especially shooters. But I'd still stress that BHB has some of the better sound/music, animation and gameplay for shooters on the system. 4 ships, a decent weapon variety, a useful charge blast, great boss fights, a good difficulty level.
I actually just finished Air Buster on Kega Fusion, the boss fights were good but not the loss of movement control halfway through the game. Was decent I guess.
Gunstar Heroes is the best on the 3DS believe it or not also if you never plays AM2R i highly recommend it

Lovelorn88 Nick Supposedly Michael Jackson composed some songs. But they had a PC Version with edited songs in place of the supposedly MJ composed songs and they could just use those.
Or Sega could just make the 360 version back compatible with the X1, S, & X. There is no reason to release the games in a new compilation when MS has made the back compat process almost painless.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles missing is disappointing but I suspect it has to do with legal issues around the music!

nah. I don't think we need it. with Sega gone from console market their games aren't really protected I guess you could sad, but these games are out there. anyone can get them. I might buy this new collection but when I think about a compilation I think about that exact disk in your hand
Sega has really bled the Genisis dry, so many reproductions, collections, handheld systems, Virtual Console etc etc...
Why have they done absolutely nothing with the Master System, Saturn & very little with the Dreamcast?
No, not really, but I welcome it anyway. I'd much rather a collection of their arcade games, especially the super scalers (OutRun, After Burner, Super Hang-On, etc.)
