I think the first way, where you keep it straight for all 5 rows and then join them in a circle at the final step, seems much quicker and easier than the second way. But thank you very much for showing both.

三分竹が今手元になくて試せないのですが、9mmが4つだと四角っぽくなってしまうので、5つ使ったほうがよいかと思います。24:30からのやり方で、9mmの竹を5つ使って、丸小を各2つずつだと55cmぐらいで14か15号ぐらいになりそうですね…大きい場合は丸小を特小かデミに変えてみるとちょうどよくなるかもしれません。
