If we can enjoy these masterpieces and, in general, Schubert's compositions, we owe a lot to Robert Schumann. After Franz's death, at a very young age (only 31 years old), his brothers threw his scores (very few of which were published) into a large bin and they would probably have been lost. It was Schumann who found, cataloged and preserved them, saving Franz Schubert's masterpieces.
This happened also with the miraculous great 9th Symphony. Schumann found the manuscript at Hüttenbrenner's home where it was under a stack of H. own compositions. Schumann begged him to hand it over which H. first refused. Only after Schumann promised to perform some of H. Work he gave the manuscript to Schumann who send it to Mendelssohn in Leipzig. So this miraculous Symphony was performed for the first time 20 years after Schubert death.
@@gunthernebel2944 didn't know this, I am not surprised about man's ambition... thanks to Schumann, anyway, who was, probably, the first to intend the great value of Schubert compositions.

I’ve got a brother like that.

I wonder what others were thrown out and are now lost forever.

Thank you for this. Seems like kempff recorded everything..
Any sonatas you would recommend to listen to first?
The G major D 894
I’d say D.664
I would agree with no. 864, or Opus 120, I think. Others may be more profound, but this one never fails to bring a smile to my entire being.
