@BenHeien they were meant for DJ and live sound and have lots of output but don't go super low. Though low enough for most of my music. I could probably block off ports to get them lower though I'd have less sensitivity at the bottom end but could turn them up more.

Normally I'd scoff at a sealed box but considering how much larger the driver and box are im sure it plays lower than the old sub did. Also good idea building in the brace to help stop standing waves in the box. That's something I never thought about doing.

  • @ricksmi18

I just love the videos you are making now. I know the idea you have 3 points to make a video
    1. Quality
    2. Quantity
    3. Value
You can oney have 2 of them. But for somehow, you all was get all 3 of them in the new videos.
Yes, I will say I'm an og person I think on here. I remember the vlogs you made back in the day where you will meet up with your friend at Auto Zone and ask him what size sub do you have in your car and you pull out of know where a 6.5 in sub shaking windows
Then the time when you moved and you hated the red light where people did not know how to drive at.
Then when you made that one vlog where you went back to the old house to disconnect the old internet from the house because they were still charging, you even threw you and called them up, cancel the service.
So I have been here a while, and I jest hope you don't get burned out like other creators have done.
    Best to ya,
    Rick smith

As a DIY guy at heart I love your channel. The first several pairs of speakers that I made back in the 70s used Philips and KEF drivers. I wish I had the tech that is available now. It was largely trial and error back then.
I listened to this for the first time through a pair of $39 mint green Skull Candy in-ear buds that responded reasonably flat down to the 16Hz note. The audio on RUclips can be surprisingly good!
As a side note, I enjoy listening to different loudspeakers in reviews when they are recorded under very controlled conditions in the same space with well placed high quality microphones. These reviews when heard through good headphones or home speakers can easily reveal differences between the different models. Yes, it is true that we are not listening directly to those speakers and we will not be able to detect things like their ability to reproduce depth or soundstage but useful differences in tonal balance and frequency response can be heard. It is boring listening to the "purists" who dismiss these types of comparisons out of principle. Just thought I'd share this because you seem like the kind of person who might have thought about this at some time.

i love soph's reaction to hearing the sub for the first time, i know that feeling well after building a system and it actually turns out the way i had hoped lol. sometimes my customers pick bad equipment and the results are poor to say the least. im always after the crazy low end response, but i also listen to a lot of music from the 80s, so my drivers need to basically do everything. doesnt usually work that way for me though, but after seeing this i am def leaning towards going sealed again! along with some ideas for cutting down on the waves inside, never heard of the "line of sight" method before and i really like that.

I was not ready for the 16Hz hit, only had the SVS PC-4000 hooked up for half a day and it's expressing things I did not know were there before with my random powered home theater sub that the amp died in and I converted to a passive sub powered by a crown XLS 1502 in bridge mode. Also surprised that RUclips compression/encoding did not eat that.

I guarantee most people gear in the comments can't get that low. They think their cheap 6.5" drivers or cheap headphones can play that 16hz when they hear the harmonic distortion that is much louder than the actual 16hz tone when those drivers are trying to play it.
Alternatively they listen very quietly but I doubt they would hear 20hz then.

10:54 i like the apparent loudness, as that is what i tune my system with and get best results from.
and for my speakers it sounded like 20 to 30hz was lowest in amplitude and 16 and 18hz was much louder. especially 16hz was loudest, that is an impressive frequency.
my hypothesis is that apparent loudness gets magnifies when recorded and played back on a apparent loudness eq'ed system, but sound perfect for the original system.

I am ABSOLUTELY a shill for sealed enclosures.
My very first system ever was a full kicker speaker/sub combo in my 1993 del sol (as i called it, the del slow). I had typical cheap kicker speakers (the black and yellow low end coaxial) in both doors and rear pillars. and then I had a 12" kicker comp sub, from way back in 2008/2009 (black and yellow). The amp I had at the time, I didn't know it but turned out for the price it was actually super strong.... it was a crunch dual channel which I had wired the sub into bridged. and apparently, according to some reviews of the little thing, it can output 300w when bridged which for me, at that time, was insane power levels. and i used the bass boost which made it thump that much harder. anyway it was a sealed system. and i let it run up to 250hz because the sub was rated to 250hz (I remember it being that way and chose that for the 12db cutoff on the headunit).
after this I had a 2006 honda s2000. jbl speakers (yuk) which i got rid of and put in a pair of polk audio mm series. then I had kept the 12" kicker sub until it blew up.... sad days.
then I had traded the s2k in for a 05 subaru wrx sti.... i had a couple systems. one was a custom transmission line box I made. first with a cheap sub (dont even remember the brand) but then I had put in a pioneer sub (hated). the port noise was horrific. figured "I made it, user error" so I bought a cerwin vega dual 10" box for stupid cheap from the car audio shop behind my mechanic shop. barely running 300 watts the subs blew.... but that whole time, nothing but port noise. could argue user error, but I replaced the subs with another set of 10" brand new with the same 300w and it still had insane port noise.
finally went back to sealed and had pure sound quality. i get it, ported hits really low, but that port noise, for someone like me, im too sensitive to it. i like my music loud but also crystal clear. and the only way to achieve that is sealed.

I've got Truthear zero's (iem with subwoofers)
And they go all the way down to beyond human hearing, 16hz was very interesting to hear, it was basically silent but I could feel it just fine, now I want to get a bass exciter for my chair, dammit

    • @JoshM7
      @JoshM7 2 месяца назад +1

Beyond human hearing is simply the point where your ears start to roll off which varies person to person. 20Hz being the common accepted frequency where most peoples ears roll off. But it's not a brick wall and you can hear below that just fine. Normally you just need some extra output as you go lower to hear it at equal loudness vs higher frequencies.
If your hearing cuts off at 15kHz for example. As in, you can hear 14kHz but can't hear 15kHz at the same volume. Bump up 15kHz by 6dB-12dB and you'll find that you can hear it. Heck give enough volume to 20kHz and you'll hear that too even if you can't hear 15kHz at normal levels.

@@JoshM7 The zeros subwoofer can produce frequencies all the way down to 3hz, you're telling me that 3 hz is audible when you turn the volume up? Yeah, but you're eardrums and subwoofers will be in agony with the amount of excursion the subwoofers will be doing to make it equal in volume to music at a good listening volume

    • @JoshM7
      @JoshM7 2 месяца назад

@@mr_bear6362 yeah 3Hz is probably going to need a crap ton of gain to hear it. It would sound more like the background noise is pulsing vs hearing a actual tone but I personally still call that hearing it because if you plug your ears you won't hear that pulsing sense anymore.
It'll sound like a tremolo effect with your ears with loud frequency around 10Hz or 11/12Hz and below. Assuming you aren't using headphones and using a sub/subs. I've not tried it with headphones because most have too much harmonic distortion to actually play loud enough (110dB minimal preferably more) at 10Hz area.

11:16: ATH-M50-BT2 bailed around 30Hz. Also, heard Floatplane works pretty well for music, especially real-time streams, due to a different compression algorithms, but will require a monthly fee for your subscribers (which you will be mostly collecting yourself) to be able to watch anything there.

Great choice on the sub, I ran stryke way back and theyve only gotten better since the name change/rebrand. Would be cool to see you do something in car with one. As far as other platforms go maybe floatplane would be a good place for some stuff. Audio based collab with ltt might be interesting.
Im using a single 18" sealed in my home studio as well. Similar box design as well with similar bracing for the same standing wave issue. Really like those corners might have to come up with my own version.

I'd be interested to know how the initial equal loudness curve was generated. Was purely based on Fletcher-Munson curves or those plus measured room response at the normal listening position? I'd have to guess at the latter as some DSP corrections are then applied. But then I'd have to ask which F-M curve was used, as the tonal corrections vary with SPL.
As always, the platinum standard to which all other speaker building videos are compared!

Excellent video production quality! However, I think it should be noted that a low Fs sub driver should only be a priority when not utilizing equalization and/or using low-voltage amps.
Higher effective motor torque improves impulse response and a stiffer suspension lowers the box size, with very similar SPL at the Fs of a low BL/soft suspension driver.

I noticed after playing with APO equalizer and hesuvi the sound was amazingly not bad, but needs some tweaking like a custom tune profile. Who 3d print's small speakers and tunes them? You!
