"Tybalt, hand me my long sword." Throws him a shotgun.
Let's not neglect the fact the shotgun literally had a plaque with its namesake on it. What a movie.
I also always loved how Mercutio's was a "dagger."
The line is, "Give me my long sword, ho" spoken by Lord Montague to Lady Montague. Then Mrs. Gellar says, "Thou shall not stir one foot to strike a foe."
I thought the longsword was a handgun with a comically long barrel
The gun is mighty then sword
How has no one recognized the epicness of what just happened?!? They just did an entire trailer in iambic pentameter and did so seamlessly. This comment is for you writers, I see you 🤯
HT is good at the principle of : If you're gonna do the joke, do the WHOLE JOKE!
Wow just re-watched it and you're right. Bravo HT, bravo!
THANK YOU!!!
Reminded me of when they did an entirely musical trailer for les miserables
The skill and thought that must have gone into this is vastly underrated.
Oh my god, that ending line totally got me...
“Rosalind is about to get a call from one of her girlfriends about the literal bullet that she just dodged.”
I don't get. Please explain who is That referencing.
She's the girl Romeo is love sick over before he meets Juliet
@@pollybayfield8332 thanks
That was my favorite line.
"Rosaline is gonna get a call from one of her girlfriends to tell her about the bullet she just dodged" 🤣🤣🤣
"But this time, it has drugs and guns."
West Side Story: "Am I a joke to you?"
Why do people not remember this film?
Of course West Side Story is just another remake of Romeo & Juliet, only set in the 1950s and made into a musical.

“When has Shakespeare been so trippy?” Ummmmmm ever heard of A Midsummer’s Night Dream?
No, but I did have a very offensive dream one night in a forest.
Midsummer's Night Dream is the best thing to ever come outa Shakespeare's pen
Haha, Shakespeare on LSD!
The Tempest is pretty trippy too.
So like Lysander is bewitched to spurn Hermia while Helena is very confused…and the Queen of the fairies is made to fall in love with a man who has been turned into a donkey. I would say that goes into weird land.

@Sam son the being in his prime? Cause that's right

I cannot believe you didn’t do “Starring...Leonardo Di-Capulet”
Because he is Montegue
@@deshik yup there it is...but still!
It sounds so right, I didn't even realize it wasn't his name the first time.
Well, then they’d be getting a bunch of comments going on about Romeo was a Montague and Juliet was a Capulet.
And because they pop a Molly, it should be Leonardo Di-Capsulet.
I remember reading Romeo and Juliet in 8th grade and becoming immediately convinced it was a parody because the plot was so egregiously over-the-top
Romeo and Juliet is not a parody, but it is also not a sincere love story; it is a tragedy. The next time you need to write about this story for an English or literature class, take this, get an A, and thank Mr. Regular: "The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet isn't that they died; it's that they died too young to know that their love wasn't worth dying for." It is first and foremost a story about children who become obsessed with one another and pursue a relationship without the maturity to know what that means or how to conduct themselves. The over-the-top incidents that occur are representative of the incidents young people up till today go through blindly 'in love'.
Like who told Shakespeare he was a good writer
@@Green-fg4ng the entire world gaslit into believing that
They really outdid themselves here. The whole thing in Iambic Pentameter? Well done, Epic Voice Guy and crew!
Oh my gosh I never noticed that!
Interesting, pretend I have no idea what the hell you're talking about and translate that in layman's terms for good measure
@Eric this Honest Trailer is a long poem, written like Shakespeare did
@@erichfiedler1481 Iambic pentameter is the metre in which Shakespeare wrote most of his works. An "iamb" is two syllables where the _second_ one is stressed. Iambic pentameter means each line consists of five iambs. Basically, it goes "di DA di DA di DA di DA di DA". It's rarely followed _precisely_ (either in Shakespeare or in this video), but most lines of Shakespeare fit roughly into that metre.
Truly fantastic work. Well done you guys, and thanks so much.
If you “wish you had a romance like romeo and juliette” what you really saying is “i wish i died when i was 14 over someone ive known for two weeks tops”
Exactly! If you really read and thought about it, it's really not a love story. It's about a 3-day relationship between a 13 year-old and a 17 year-old, that ended in 6 deaths.
So...like middle school romance with suicide?
The original play IS a tragedy guys, its actually not that mindblowing. Its basically a story about how teen love taken to extremes comes to some very bad ends, we can see similar stories in Florida.
@@DragonsAreHungry Even so, it's still a better love story than Twilight. XD
@@markchristensen23 Almost anything is a better romance then twilight.
Subtlety: *exists
Baz Luhrmann: we don't do that here
Please say, "Don't feel bad about being alone on Valentine's Day, you were alone the rest of the year anyways"
Yes, all too true..... Yet hilarious.
Oof
This legit makes me feel better
lol!
He just said it in kelp and stitch honest trailer
Yes, Luhrman's interpretation is flashy, maybe even trashy, and totally OTT, but the thing is *so is the play*. The "world's most epic romance" lasted three days and six people died! The story is not supposed to be something to aspire to. "These violent delights have violent ends" is a warning. Luhrman's interpretation is totally true to the play. And I love it 😅
I know right!
I love the movie (cuz it’s just sooooo campy) but it (and the play) have an utterly ridiculous storyline. (It has to be said, I am shameless at plugging my channel EVERYWHERE, so let’s get it over with. I was bored and made an (extremely grungy) music video that features this movie’s flashy production more than once. Thank you)
Camp would be a more acurrate term I think (not trashy). This movie is indeed a masterpiece.
“Paul Rudd in his prime” You mean 19 years before his prime.
No, he's just been in his prime for 25 years. The man never left his prime.
You guys do know that's not Paul Rudd... Right? It's Eion Bailey.
I really don’t see the resemblance between the two but nah it’s baby Paul
@@andreraymond6860 I don't know if that was supposed to be a joke or not but no that is definitely Paul Rudd.
"And just like them, he's always soaking wet" - welp, so much for showing this video in my 8th grade classroom...
I mean, you could, but good luck getting absolutely anything else accomplished that day. "Dude! Did he just say what I THINK he said??" "He did, man!" "'Soaking wet'- teeheehee."
@Boy Boy who/what are you?
Even before his Titanic breakout Leo can't stop dying.
Or drowning.
In honor of Christopher Plummer, say "Close the book with a flourish."
I did not know he passed away. Now I'm just incredibly sad.
I worked at a movie theatre when this came out. The amount of refund requested because people couldn't understand what they were saying was crazy.
What? One, did they NOT know they were going to see a Shakespeare film? Two, you don't really have to understand, it's more of a feel, vibe and aesthetic! Star-crossed lovers, that's all you needed to know!
@@CandaceYoung962
The decision to pair late-middle English with a modern setting was definitely...a choice. It doesn't appeal to purists who would want to see a period setting, and the language makes it hard to follow for casual viewers looking for a standard modern adaptation. Most people know the gist of Romeo and Juliet but haven't read the play enough to follow it if the audio is too busy.
@@BonaparteBardithion That is a fair point. I like this one. Alot. However, I am a Franco Zeffirelli woman for the win! My least favorite actually stars Norma Shearer and Leslie Howard. It's literally two 30 year olds in a Hollywood/British/Canadian soap opera!
Huh, that's odd. Personally, I liked the dialogue. But then again, I was also the kid who enjoyed most of the literature our teachers made us read in English class...
That's interesting.
"At this point Hollywood is barely trying"
“It’s true home is on the CW” yup that sounds about right
I’m gonna be real, the iambic pentameter was very pleasing to listen to. I expected it to be just be for the intro, but then it *kept going* and it was delightful. I thank you for the effort.
Absolutely!
I love the way iambic skips along, pentameter helps make that rhythm strong.
I always felt the story of Romeo and Juliet needed more drugs and violence.
Yeah I do agree, but I think that they did a lot of dancing around with those guns and not nearly enough shooting. I mean with all that gun flashing around, when you get right down to it Romeo really was the only one that really got his gun off. They did some dancing, some posing, a lot of talking while brandishing those sword 9mms.
Remember, the only bloodshed outside of the mutual suicide at the end of Billy Shakes' R&J was the duel w/ Tybalt; R&J'96 is more about a glitzy modern makeover on the old story. Have to admit, they did a great job of it; putting Leo & Claire together was a casting triumph. Hard to believe that movie is now older than they were when they made the film...
Honestly adding more drugs to the story made make it sense
Me: why would anyone do any of this? Oh, they were high? Oh okay then, yeah
Or to be an anime
There's plenty of violence, I just thought they needed more dope.
While watching the movie in class, at the exact moment where Romeo had already taken the poison yet realised Julia was alive my sister played the Seinfeld theme.
The teacher was so pissed.
I feel like if your teacher was trying to teach you Shakespeare by watching this movie, then they have no right to be pissed at anything your class did during that time.

If anyone asks what the '90s are like, and they know the basics of Shakespeare, make them watch this movie---or this video. It's exactly what Shakespeare would look, sound, and feel like after passing through a '90s pop culture meat grinder.
Pretty fucking much.
Thats why is so awesome film..
Pure unfiltered 90s..
Hey, the 90s had their advantages, ranging from the fall of Communism (temporarily, yes, but still), the increasing relevance of animation (anime, Disney Afternoon, and the Spielberg cartoon shows among them), and the rise of quality video gaming (N64 classics like Banjo-Kazooie and GoldenEye 007, PlayStation games like Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid, and the glory days of Blizzard Entertainment and Westwood Studios).
That's a really effective way of describing it!

Ever since 9th grade when I was forced to read the play, I’ve had a long running theory that Benvolio masterminded the entirety of the play. He’s just present enough to have an impact, yet he’s quiet enough to fly completely under the radar. Not to mention he’s got a couple of really suspicious moments throughout the play.
What is his endgame, though? What is the goal?

whats funny is that shakespear wanted this to be a romance parody, and everybody made a big deal of it
What's funnier is that he based this on a roman story called called Romeus and Juliet. At least THAT ended slightly better with one of the kids being hung for treason and the other was full on banished.
i mean, with all the innuendos in there, it still is if you read it carefully?correctly? idk but you get it
IIRC: Shakespeare writes a bunch of tragedies about the weakness and stupidity of man. The queen says "you're great, but you should write a romance!" Shakespeare writes a tragedy about tweens being so dumb they get everyone around them hurt and then they kill themselves because they are so impulsive. Everyone: "it's the greatest romance of all time!"
I can only imagine Willie slamming his head into his writing desk after that.
I agree that it's funny, but only in a morbid way given the sad amount of people who think it's actually romantic. I wouldn't be surprised if that opinion being ingrained in mainstream society are why literally thousands of other "romantic" stories are even worse about mistaking lust for love and other unhealthy ideas about romance "should" be.
@@SimonBuchanNz Ya konw, I told something about that line to my english teacher back 20 years ago. I got a stern lecture about being unromantic and had to memorize the prologue. Well, it was, together with the monologue at the end, the best part, so it could have been worse.^^
"It's true home is on The CW" seems accurate.

seriously? you had visual depictions on the screen of what they were talking about, and you still didn't understand most of it? I know it's old english but it's not THAT hard to understand especially with the intense acting style to really exaggerate their expressions and feelings.
Right? If we wanted a modern take on Romeo and Juliet, we would've stuck with West Side Story.
