We have an old fig tree that was grown from a cutting that was smuggled into the country in great grandfathers boot from the island of Sicily. It produces wonderful sweet sugar flavored figs but hasn't done too well the last 2 seasons. I am taking your advice and pruning it but also rooting some cuttings. I am very excited and thank you for sharing this with us.
I tried to root some from our turkey fig in virginia in my little green house and did pretty much the same prep but I read an article to dip root stem end in raw honey then dip in rotone or similar medium, poke a hole in soil thenease in and tighten up soil around it. I used qt size pots and kept moist. I did 12 and ended up with 10 trees. It was my first time with figs, didn't have same luck with my azalea or camelia bush starts. . Gonna try again this year. Thanks for your videos!
When I had my old fig orchard, I started them all from cuttings. I used a black, half gallon nursery pot filled with potting soil. I set the pots on the South side of my house on window ledges in April. I put three cuttings per pot. Sometimes all three would root but there was always one that rooted if the cuttings were good quality. My cousin would just stick the cuttings in the soil on the South side of his home and get a good number to root. They also air layer easily.
Looking forward to sharing some fig trees with friends, and hopefully sell a few to add some funding to my gardening obsession!! All this started from the initial goal of cutting it to just stop my tree from taking over my backyard…LOL
Excellent video! I have been hoping for you to break the process down. Thank you. I watched the one last year but this one shows what you have learned and with confidence
I was given two fig cuttings last spring with a order from IV Organics. I knew nothing about starting fig trees from cuttings. They already had rooting hormone on one end so I knew which end was the bottom. I followed their instructions to the tee. I now have two very healthy 3-4 foot bushy fig trees in tall grow bags. The said the name was “Gramps”, so if anyone knows about this variety I’d love to know too.
I'm patting myself on the back because I grafted two grafts in early spring and they both took beautifuly. I had tried several times before and failed but I finally got it right.
We got our onion seed from you yesterday. Although we will not be starting them for another 45 days we do appreciate the great service! We have a couple of questions regarding your greenhouse. We have seen a few in the past and we could not find as to where they were answered. Would love to send you an email with the questions but not sure as how to send it, Thank You!
I never had success with growing cuttings with growth hormone until someone suggested to poke a hole in the soil first, and not push it into the soil. Otherwise I'm just wiping the growth hormone off as I'm pushing it down. I'm only at 50% success rate. But I think this type or strain of gardenia I'm working with is finicky.
50% success really isn’t too bad, you may want to look into biodynamic farming. There is a certain lunar cycle each month that will help you be more successful when you start plants weather by seed, graft etc. I believe it has been one of the keys to my success. My partner and I have a small gardening company.
Yeah I use a dibbler to make a hole in each pot before adding the cutting. Should have mentioned that. Otherwise, like you said, all the rooting hormone will be wiped off.
My cuttings from you that I bought last spring are doing great ! I transplanted them in 25 gallon pots and next spring they are going in the ground. I live in Central Florida zone 9. I always wanted to ask about your fig tree spacing. How far apart are you planting them ?
I space mine 10' apart, but I cut mine back pretty hard each year as we take cuttings. 15' to 20' spacing would probably be better if you have the room. If you don't mind, would you please leave us a Google review here: g.page/r/Ce0wCoaWkbnJEBM/review
Ok 15' it is then. Thank you. I am a big fan and have been watching you and taking your advise for awhile now. I left a review for you as well. @@LazyDogFarm
I have no luck propagating cuttings. The only way it has worked so far for me is sticking the cutting in a jar of water and putting it in the windowsill. Lol.

Travis, I have some black Gold seedling mix left over from the summer garden. Can you use that for these cutting?
@@bigredforever Yeah that should work just fine.
Thanks for doing this show. These figs can lead you down a rabbit hole. Almost addictive.
Almost!!! I'm hooked 😆
Yes ! I'm Miss Figgy at heart ❤️
They sure can!

I just clip it off and use rootone and works for me. Oh yeah you do need an Alabama bucket nearby 😊
Hah!
Thank you! This is a clever idea for a path of income on the farm, might as well the few random trees to turn a profit.

That's a dang good "take rate" for your first try. Never heard of the honey trick.
First rate Travis. Thx. Chuck in Jensen Beach FL
Aw, missed snagging one of the final trees. I’ll be sure to get one next time tho!
You taught me how to successfully start figs from cuttings and it’s quite easy to do. Thank you!
💪🏽Ordered Mary Lane Figs and hoping for the best

Can you recommend a “good” farming book, especially for zone 8?
Can't remember the exact name, but there used to be a book called "Guide to Vegetable Gardening in the Southeast" or something like that.

Where do you get your larger pots you step up the established trees into?
Greenhouse Megastore online
I have ''little miss figgy'' which is a bush variety, not a tree, will this work for that too?
Yes.
Mike Kincaid uses just sand for cuttings I have had good success with that
Can blueberries be done this same way?
Not sure. Never propagated any blueberries.
