I'm really curious to find out what it will be like when Xiaomi has more products and phones in the US. Seems like they've been slow to roll out, which is probably wise.
Don't know if they'll go mainstream anytime soon. There's still a lot of stigma around Chinese products being cheap and low quality in North America. A lot of Chinese companies have struggles to penetrate non-Asian markets because Chinese is associated with low quality.
I don't know about the US but I live in a country with a lot of Xiaomi products and so far they have been selling great. However here the challenge for them isn't to compete against flagship phones but against other budget brands like oppo, Vivo etc. As for these kinds of products, they haven't exactly what replaced Google right now due to the fact that many people don't actually use this stuff but those who do just use Google instead since there is some sort of stigma around Chinese products.

honestly having tested a couple boxes. the mi box was one of the best android tv boxes that are available and ive had better experinces with it than with some other boxes. it does need more usb ports and the ethernet port but it still worked great for most other things.
Just got your VPN deal at PIA. I have been thinking of doing it a long time and your recommendation along with the deal you have with them finally got me to pull the trigger on a VPN. No worries now for 2 years. Thank you!
I have two of the original Mi Box's. One never worked well and kept rebooting. I thought an update would fix it but it never worked after the update. The second one is still going strong and all the Mi Box S features as far as I can tell after it updated. Thank you Mi for updating the Mi Box original! It was my first device after cutting the cord and I think I will stick with it as I am not a gamer or into super HiFi audio and use a soundbar. Netflix is my only movie subscription and that the Mi Box supports it properly is a big plus for me. I have had RUclips TV for over a year now, it has gotten expensive and I am not sure it is a good deal anymore. Xfinity has a streaming package with no contract for $20 bucks that lets you select like 19 stations which is enough for me. Got to keep the costs down. You have been a big help to me over the years. I am a senior and you make new tech understandable for me.
I got a Roku ultra for around 59.99 cause it was on clearance the big thing that drew my attention to the ultra is that its the only Roku they sell right now with a ethernet port so you can direct connect to the roku instead of being forced to connect wifi only
Install parsec, moonlight, or steam link on it and you can game on the couch. As long as you have a gaming pc And proper wifi(5G) with a lan connection to your pc.
This thing is very popular in Russia, because you can install a 3rd party app for free, where you have unlimited access to moves in any quality up to 4k. It has muliple sources from where it can stream movies if one server is offline, even torrent streaming is build in with a search engine. Priceless.
I HATE messing around with TV interfaces from a remote. I love my Chromecast. I can start a show from my computer go in my living room sit on the couch and open the Netflix or Google Home app and pause/play from there. Much easier and faster using my phone as a remote than an actual physical remote. Also, videostream chromecast plugin is perfect for steaming stuff from your computer. You can torrent a TV series and it'll automatically figure out what show it is and the episodes. It will auto play the next episode and save your progress. You can pause/play from your phone or computer. Chromecast is the only thing I'll ever need.
Been using this device with my family. It failed and started lagging when it was on over the night or was awaken from sleep. Suddenly some kind of hardware stutter came along too, which could indicate software or hardware fault. But I guess it is software, still. Returned it and got another one on warranty. Was happy the first day, then on second day, same thing over again. Tried settings like no bakgrund processes and only allow one app running at one single time. Still no improvement, still had to restart the device if I was able to, due to laggy responsiveness being felt in the remote too. I can't recommend this device, if it would not crash/hang/freeze, it would be an awesome device!
You being too hard on the MI Box S. The Firestick doesn't also have a network port. Really gamers Linus. What 'Gamer' & titles would a real gamer anyway want to play on android. The focus of this device is streaming. I for one don't have a single game installed on my phone anyway. Leave gaming to Pc's & console.
I am using Brave right now. I was having issues with wifi on a new laptop and Brave had the highest bandwidth test compared to Chrome and Edge. I miss Opera being unique.
I've tried both this and the new firestick 4k, I was more impressed by the new firestick, it was quick, responsive, and much smaller than the mi box, plus it had everything the mi box had with the right links on RUclips, good luck with whatever you choose,
Hey guys, with your Android TV pair up the remote. To do so, go to settings, bluetooth and click add. Go to your remote, hold the Home and Left button until the remote flashes green. Click TV BLE Remote and the mic button works.
@@rv112xy Because it's an android TV Box, you can Download the Amazon prime Video for TV APK, and install it like you would do it in a smartphone. I could give you the link if you want
After you install this, you have to use two controllers? One for turning on the TV and the Mi box controller aftwerwards to control the smart? Or does the control also turn on the TV?
I have grown to be a faithful Xiaomi fan. I have never come across such a combination of quality and affordability in all different types of hardware. I have the Mi Box 3 4K box, which is also Google certified, has gaming, Google voice search, Chromecast, and a host of other features for even less than this box. I got mine for about $50 via Gearbest. The cost included expedited shipping. Had it within 10 days. The box feels solid and luxurious, just like every other Xiaomi product including my Yeelights, Mijia dashcam, smart outlets, pen, battery backup, mix 2, note 5, note 6, and even the pocophones I got for my kids. Pleased with every single purchase, except the Mi Mix 3 which I would have loved had there not been a network connectivity issue with every Korean Telecom provider. Good stuff almost always.
I wouldnt recommend it. It was a laggy experience when it comes to overall usage but also videowatching (where it glitched out because of cacheprobs). While friends of mine bought the MiBox i bought the FireTv stick for a difference. On sale it costs half as much as the MiBox. The experience is way smoother and the apps are working better in almost all cases while also being smaller. While it cant provide a full chromecast experience (which also crashed and often lagged on the MiBox) you yet still can connect youtube/spotify and many more to it. Excluding the recently added screen share feature. Tl;dr: Software experience with MiBox just isnt good. Wait for a FireTV stick sale
why dont the people that make these android tv google assist boxes watch these reviews and just add the things that are missing on there next release. make sure you incorporate gigabit ethernet and dual band wifi and at least 3 gig ddr3 and 32 gig internal. BANG THE PERFECT BOX
I have this and it is really great for my non-smart bedroom TV. I even use it for gaming via G-Force Now and a Bluetooth gamepad. RUclips, Netflix, Amazon Prim Video all work flawlessly. Highly recommended even in 2023.
The only issue I've found with using the original MiBox is that even though it has the Google Play Store for additional apps, there just aren't all that many for the UK users, like no ITV Hub, 4OD, UKTVPlay...the list goes on, and this is even after 2 years after release. Then you think "Ok, well I'll just sideload the apps I need" but you just run into even more issues like the apps not being tv/remote friendly...all in all it just becomes a massive headache
I would never EVER use a video device without an ethernet port. I had a chromecast and it had a total crap wireless connection that would always reset less than 20 feet away from the router.
GTX 480 could fry an egg for you while playing Crysis. It's not that complicated really, you take a Tower cooler, insert some metal prongs, don't install a fan and stick some bread in there. The metal prongs will convect the heat to the bread making it nice and crisp. Obviously you will need to select a CPU that will heat all the way to a nice and toasty 90-ish C and saturate the cooler's thermal capacity without overheating the CPU. Probably something cheap and low W.
I bought one for the lightly used bedroom TV. I just don't like the interface of the Roku that was attached to it and I really didn't want to shell out the cash for another Shield that won't get used much (We have a Shield on the main TV). So far, so good. So for a main television I'd opt for the Shield (which I did) but for secondary TV's (bedroom, kid's room, guest bedroom, basement, garage, etc. I'd pick one of these up to have the same interface on all TV's.
this has the same hardware as the previous MiiBox and I can tell you the people that bought those complained constantly about choppy picture because the system was so crappy it couldn't handle basic video playback as it lacked either the RAM to do it or the horsepower to do it. do yourself a favor and spring for the Shield if you want Android TV. but to be honest with how fractured device support is from apps unless all you are doing is Hulu, Netflix and RUclips you will be better off picking up a device from every major platform, I did a 3 month prepay plan back when DirecTV Now first launched and got a FREE Apple TV from that (the 3 months of service was $105, so cheaper then the $150 the Apple TV sold for), I did a 3 month prepay of Sling ($60) for a $50 credit toward a Fire TV Box 2nd gen, I bought a Roku Premiere+ on Black Friday last year for $50, the Shield TV I caught a sale on the first gen that bundled the OG remote (with rechargeable battery and headphone jack) and first gen Shield TV 16GB model for like $25 LESS then the Shield TV by itself, so not counting the money I paid for the streaming services I was actually using I have all 4 devices for like $275 + tax and i'm good to try any new streaming cable service with horribly limited device support at launch.
I bought one of those cheap 5 US$ wireless keyboard/controllers that come with a USB dongle that you can plug into the Mi Box S and it easily works for when you need to type a title in the search box or navigate the screen with a built-in trackpad and/or cursor keys. BTW, the Mi Box S is now only around 50-60 US$ online in southeast Asia (through either Lazada or Shopee).

Chromecast doesn't have an interface - you'll need your phone for everything
i went to walmart, bought this thing, i can't find any message included....
honestly having tested a couple boxes. the mi box was one of the best android tv boxes that are available and ive had better experinces with it than with some other boxes. it does need more usb ports and the ethernet port but it still worked great for most other things.

Just got your VPN deal at PIA. I have been thinking of doing it a long time and your recommendation along with the deal you have with them finally got me to pull the trigger on a VPN. No worries now for 2 years. Thank you!
The previous Mi box became very buggy after upgrading to android 8.0.
Keep up with these Xiaomi reviews. Maby Mi Mix 3 or Mi Router HD

Priceless.

Who would’ve guessed,
it’s Xiaomi.
I have many xiaomi products. I'm very happy with them. Good quality and great price value.

Dat MLP
true
Yeah the Google one is more expensive but works perfectly all the time for me.
Next video: Killer
You being too hard on the MI Box S. The Firestick doesn't also have a network port. Really gamers Linus. What 'Gamer' & titles would a real gamer anyway want to play on android. The focus of this device is streaming. I for one don't have a single game installed on my phone anyway. Leave gaming to Pc's & console.
The Mi Box S Amazon link is for the Original Mi Box. The Mi Box S is a Walmart exclusive.
Linus what are your thoughts on the Brave browser?
Or browsers in general. I'd like to see a vid about modern desktop/mobile browsers with a recommendation.
That would be pretty cool but browsers always evolve and change from time to time as they pack more features in them
I am using Brave right now. I was having issues with wifi on a new laptop and Brave had the highest bandwidth test compared to Chrome and Edge. I miss Opera being unique.
It'd also be good if he talked about Yandex Browser.
You know what? Just download every single browser you can, compare, contrast, and benchmark!
Linus must be a brony...My Little Pony smack in the middle of the screen lol
I'd be surprised if he *wasn't* a Brony. Lol.
Lol. I'm just speculating based on the hot pink Honda Civic® that he (I guess?) still drives
Not to mention it's in the Play Next section with other 'resume watching' titles.
Could be his kids.
:thonk:
I've tried both this and the new firestick 4k, I was more impressed by the new firestick, it was quick, responsive, and much smaller than the mi box, plus it had everything the mi box had with the right links on RUclips, good luck with whatever you choose,
Xbox One S in sale or used is also a intersting streaming box with good games =D
CEKROM but the Power consumption : mi box =7W and Xbox about 50W.
And your xbox life time will be shorter
Xiaomi producrs are just in the middle of every category of technology that you need.
Not overpriced, well-built and it just damn work!
Hey guys, with your Android TV pair up the remote. To do so, go to settings, bluetooth and click add. Go to your remote, hold the Home and Left button until the remote flashes green. Click TV BLE Remote and the mic button works.

You can sideload amazon prime video...
How?
@@rv112xy Because it's an android TV Box, you can Download the Amazon prime Video for TV APK, and install it like you would do it in a smartphone. I could give you the link if you want
@@one_juru I found it already thanks. It works fine. Some features are missing of course like skipping fast.
After you install this, you have to use two controllers? One for turning on the TV and the Mi box controller aftwerwards to control the smart? Or does the control also turn on the TV?

hopeful Xiaomi won't become another national security issue...
Could you mod the mi box with highest coverage wifi antenna and also COOLING fan or more extreme like WATER-COOLED IT
5:47 OR... buy a USB Hub for that single USB port. Lol.
Yes, a USB dongle with 3 USB ports and Gigabit Ethernet.
You are all setup.
The beauty of Linux!
That's how it's done right with usb stick dedicated to internal memory n your beast box
Any updates to similar products? Would love to see a follow up comparing similar products and which we should pick up.
ME ALSO
I wouldnt recommend it.

Easy fix with USB Ethernet adapter. If used with USB hub, you can also add USB storage devices, mice, controllers, keyboards...etc.
@@tubeslats USB 2.0 can't carry more than two device of expansion it doesn't have enough power.

Smart
I bought one for the lightly used bedroom TV. I just don't like the interface of the Roku that was attached to it and I really didn't want to shell out the cash for another Shield that won't get used much (We have a Shield on the main TV). So far, so good. So for a main television I'd opt for the Shield (which I did) but for secondary TV's (bedroom, kid's room, guest bedroom, basement, garage, etc. I'd pick one of these up to have the same interface on all TV's.
So, being that I'm not a gamer at all, it sounds like this is the one I should go with? Would be a great 4k replacement for my old Nexus Player...
I know that it's a little bad and weak but still heck it's 60 bucks. If you hav problem with it the go buy a Nvidia shield.
this has the same hardware as the previous MiiBox and I can tell you the people that bought those complained constantly about choppy picture because the system was so crappy it couldn't handle basic video playback as it lacked either the RAM to do it or the horsepower to do it. do yourself a favor and spring for the Shield if you want Android TV. but to be honest with how fractured device support is from apps unless all you are doing is Hulu, Netflix and RUclips you will be better off picking up a device from every major platform, I did a 3 month prepay plan back when DirecTV Now first launched and got a FREE Apple TV from that (the 3 months of service was $105, so cheaper then the $150 the Apple TV sold for), I did a 3 month prepay of Sling ($60) for a $50 credit toward a Fire TV Box 2nd gen, I bought a Roku Premiere+ on Black Friday last year for $50, the Shield TV I caught a sale on the first gen that bundled the OG remote (with rechargeable battery and headphone jack) and first gen Shield TV 16GB model for like $25 LESS then the Shield TV by itself, so not counting the money I paid for the streaming services I was actually using I have all 4 devices for like $275 + tax and i'm good to try any new streaming cable service with horribly limited device support at launch.
Mi box=this little puppy for linus😂
I bought one of those cheap 5 US$ wireless keyboard/controllers that come with a USB dongle that you can plug into the Mi Box S and it easily works for when you need to type a title in the search box or navigate the screen with a built-in trackpad and/or cursor keys.
BTW, the Mi Box S is now only around 50-60 US$ online in southeast Asia (through either Lazada or Shopee).
