2022 - I just purchased a used GX85 body for 175usd, and a 14-40mm Olympus kit lens for 90usd. The intuitive menu and compact form make it a joy to use, furthermore it produces great images, I absolutely love this camera!!!
I have one and love it. As I'm not into video/vlogging, I don't need a flip out screen. It's portable, that's why I have it. The pictures are beautiful.
I'm a full frame Nikon shooter but wanted something very small and easy to use discretely. I bought one in 2020 and that thing is amazing. Huge amount of features for such a low price. Worth it in 2020? Absolutely.
I bought the gx9 primarily for travel and street photography, but I did not know that it has those neat functions like 4k live cropping. This makes me want to try it as a video cam too, thx for the inspiration!
And it's available now with the 12-32 and 45-150 kit lenses for only $497.00! I use either a small Roland R-07 or Zoom H1 with headphone and external mic with this and get good sound. It's easy enough to sync up in Final Cut Pro X with the existing crappy camera audio. An extra step, but not a deal killer at all for this killer deal!
With a flippy screen and a mic jack this would be all the camera I need. Unfortunately they failed to include those, so it's not the best for vlogging...
I purchased the 2 lens kit with a bunch of extras for $500! Brand New! This is my first MFT and I love the small lenses and the weight and dimensions of the body make me want to use it. Images look really great and the features that Panasonic packed in to this little thing keeps it relevant.
I just recieved one off eBay, unfortunately the screen was cracked during shipping. I'm now waiting for a spare part to show up. I think it's going to be great for vlogging, though! I picked up a 7Artisans 7.5mm lens, and with that wide a field, who needs a flippy screen? You just aim in your general direction and you're pretty much guaranteed to be in frame. Also.., it's an extra step in post but.., audio by Tascam!!
I had a similar problem, my GX85's screen cracked when my sister knocked it over. Let me know how the screen replacement goes because I've wanted to do mine so badly. It's been 2 years...
Nice video, I got my 1st M43 camera 4 years ago, a brand new GX85 and it is awesome. I have since added another one I got used, a G7 used, a new G95 and two used EM10s. I have APSc and FF but these M43 are just so much fun to use.
Steven Heise sorry to bother , but would you use this for progesional work meaning im person with my own buissnes that sells coffe could i do phoyos with this?
This is a very nice, concise review, but I need to correct you. I just bought a pair of these for a museum project. Both have updated 1.3 software, but there is no HD or FHD with 24fps. There's AVCHD in 60p, 60i, 30p and 24p. MP4 in 4K 30p and 24p. MP4 in FHD 60p and 30p. MP4 in HD (720) 30p. MP4 in VGA 30p. I don't know why you have MP4 in FHD/HD 24p, but neither of mine...nope? Also, for those of us who use the built-in telextender for video...this camera only supports it in FHD or HD modes, but not 4K. Bummer, as I do mostly wildlife shots and have always appreciated Panasonic's commitment to this feature in their m43 bodies.
I just got one 3 days ago. Funny enough Ive also got the original omd em5. Obviously the gx85 has a few extra bells and whistles but to my astonishment I found the photo IQ to be no better than the em5 and the IBIS in the much older em5 is better by about 1 stop. Im having a blast on both cameras though. Shows how ahead of its time the em5 was.
I think it be fun to re- review your Panasonic cameras but from a photography point of view. A lot of people that review Panasonic always review it from a video point of view.
The GX85 should work as a b-cam to something like the G80/G85. I would film my talking shots with the G80, and then get video of like me holding the G80 with the b-cam. I plan to buy its newer sibling, the G90 as a B-cam. Right now I'm using my phone as a b-cam, and I don't like the video that comes out of the phone one bit.
If you just use external audio then you can do it all with the gx85. Or two gx85 s for the price of one g85. Spend the extra money on more lenses, a faster computer, or accessories. A hotshoe mirror works just fine for the flipping screen. And otherwise they will be basically the same.
Hi Steven ! I bought the canon M6 for you last week when we talk about the m6 or a6000! But, now, i have very good option ( 400€ with 12-32 and 35-100mm ) for this gx80! What do you think? Still good option? I loose flip screen, Jack input.. but have very nice 4k.. I really like the m6 but dont know what to do!
I love the GX80 but the problem is the autofocus is really bad. It constantly hunts to the background. I’ve always used the M6 because the autofocus is so good I don’t have to think about it. Plus, I like the bigger sensor of the M6 and the option of having f1.4 lenses. Both are great cameras, but for me filming RUclips videos, I use the M6 every day whereas the GX80 just sits on the shelf.
@@steve_heise Without waiting for your answer, I declined the offer of the gx80 and bought the ef-m 22mm f2.0 lens and a 50mm f.18 stm with the meike adapter, I am VERY happy, thank you very much Steven!
maybe if you get a small rig and use a phone as the display screen it may work. or use a phone holder on the hot shoe and stick those fuzzy things over the mic it might work vlogging
I'm getting a mirrorless soon, I've found a good deal for GX85 and its kit lens or A6000 with its kit lens also. They're at the same price (GX85 is 10$ more). I will not be buying other lens, I'm just looking for a great point and shoot mirrorless that is going to stuck with me for 3-5 years with its kit lens.
The GX85 has great image quality but the autofocus is just bad. Of the two options the A6000 has amazing autofocus and good image quality. Overall, you’ll have better success with the A6000. Hope that helps!
There's a hack. Someone uploaded the gx85 engineering spec chart. If u got courage u can take the hot Shoe section out and solder a jack in...if u don't fry the mother board

That’s a great deal!
Good video, for a video with 10k views, this was better and more concise than a lot of other reviews.
Thanks!

Grabbing it as our B camera tomorrow. Really looking forward to it!
Got one and love it. Use it for b-roll, stock footage and timelapse. Love that it can fit in my pocket with the 12-32mm zoom.

With a flippy screen and a mic it would be the G85
Just use external audio, which is better than any camera's preamps, and use the a cheap mirror attachment for the screen.

That’s a great deal! Hope you enjoy! It really is a great camera.
So does the camera hold up?
You can find the gx85 for under $300 body only used on ebay. That's a huuge bang for the money. 4k on this camera looks no different than on my G9
Yeah, it really is a good bargain.
Man the gx85 is solid af. I will say the gx8 is one of the best designed cameras though
My Gx80 really little amazing camera, loving it, I just wish that the 1080P output was better, unfortunately it’s very soft.

do you like the g95?
Yes, G95 is awesome, great features. a little bit bigger than the GX85 or EM10 bodies and higher resolution at 20mp.@@Invintius
Your review is always in topic. Great
Thanks!
that's correct... they omitted the mic input to protect the G85
what ports does this camera have for live streaming or using as a webcam.
Just got mine today! Can’t wait! I’m addicted to cameras 😂
The more time I spend with this camera, the more I love it. Image quality is absolutely amazing!

What mike did you use? It doesn’t sound like on board mic. You don’t have any wind noise outside?
What lens are you using for this camera in this video?

Definitely - that’s actually how I’ve been using it. The GX85 films all the b-roll and product shots on my current videos.

I love my GX85 so much... But I just realized the GX8 is even more perfect since it has a flip out screen and a mic input. Want one so bad.
I agree!
If I recall from when I shopped for my GX85, the GX8's IBIS does not work in video mode, only for photos. So that would be something to consider
i thought the same til I found out the IBIS on GX8 is inferior. I want that weatherseal so bad but not bad enough to give up IBIS.
i already have canon m50 + Speedbooster .... is it worth to get a gx85 as a second camera for more portability and street photography ?
What is a better 4k video camera with stabilization that has good autofocus?
Wonder if this might be a good pairing with my D3400, the D3400 for image, and the GX85 for video?
It's a good one

Wait. Does it actually shoot 24fps 1080p? I have heard countless people complain that it doesn't. Was it fixed with a firmware update?
Buy GX8 for mic input
What are your settings for this video?
