I look up to Michelle Wu so much. She raised her siblings, took care of her mentally ill mother and started a business for her mother to manage, was a Presidential scholar and had perfect SATs and ACTs, graduated with honors from Harvard, became the mayor of Boston while being a mother at the same time, and is a professional level amateur pianist! She is absolutely insane.
We are so proud to have come in contact with Ms Michelle Wu - an amazing person of great talent and finesse, a marvelous mayor, and a mother! What a gift from our God!
Music shouldn’t and isn’t just about a perfect performance. At its core, music is about expressing emotions and stories that we resonate with. And judging by the great response to this video, many resonate with how promising it is for the struggling classical industry, to have a mayor as a champion of the arts and specifically of classical music. Interpret it as you wish, but while she worked hard to benefit the industry through demonstrating that anyone can continue pursuing and enjoying music regardless of your day job, the unverified critics in the comments simply discourage amateur musicians from pursuing their dreams, and gatekeep art which was never meant to be exclusive to professionals. Amazingly well done Mayor Michelle Wu!
Watching from Peterborough Canada and came across this fantastic performance. Takes guts to play at this level when you have a real FULL TIME JOB. Yes Boston, you have a fantastic individual who also is your Mayor! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
This mayor also sponsored an "electeds of color," holiday party last 2023 Xmas season, but accidentally sending invites to white city councilors, and then rescinding them, thereby being exposed for her racist proclivities.
You can hear that the audience has first-time concert goers. How wonderful! That's precisely the objective of symphony programs and of guest performers: bring in more people to share the culture, the art, and the love. Congratulations, Mayor Wu.
Measured against a professional concert pianist, her performance was not stellar, but concert pianists have nothing else to do but practice all day every day. To be a mayor of a major city and perform this piece at this level by memory, without music? Nothing short of incredible! I wish we had more talented musicians running things in government. What a way to bring people together!

Very very good. I did not even know a mayor could be cool. Let alone that cool. Some people expose babies to classical music at a young age. This person is performing a concert while pregnant….talk about taking it to the next level…she has no limitations…meanwhile I am considering doing laundry and might clean my apartment tomorrow which is my day off…..I am definitely going to practice the piano after this which was my plan anyway but that was inspiring.

@@josephlin8065 Thank you Joseph. I just left another post, as this afternoon here in Las Vegas, I was doing my usual Saturday cleaning in our upstairs master bedroom and bathroom while Michelle Wu's Rhapsody in Blue was playing in the background. Brava, Mayor Michelle! That was exquisite piano-playing of “Rhapsody in Blue”! I’ve mostly listened to this famous Gershwin piece via audio, but have never watched a video orchestra & piano performance so up close as with the Boston Pops. I may not be a piano expert, but never realized this piece requires a lot of hand-crossing and intricate piano-playing which appears very difficult. This was amazing Gershwin performance to listen and watch! Thank you , Mayor Michelle Wu and Boston Pops!
That's the definition of a Pops orchestra. They most likely will play songs that resonate with the public, not just those who listen to classical pieces - and often they choose things that a general audience will appreciate. For instance, I love Mahler but you aren't likely to have someone who doesn't really appreciate classical music listen to the fourth. It was wonderful to see a mayor perform the Rhapsody - not many public officials would or even could do so. (I remember when we were all 'impressed' by Bill Clinton playing the sax. Corny? Yes, but props still - this is far ahead of that.)
