I watched the Celestial Toymaker as a 10 year old, scared the life out of me. Michael Gough saying "make your move, Doctor. Make your last move". Only Gough could deliver that line in quite that chilling way. Still remember it 57 years later. NPH has a huge burden, living up to that. Gough was hugely underrated, playing, among scores of great performances, both the Toymaker and Alfred Pennyworth and making those polar opposite roles equally convincing and memorable. None of those audio books and such are canon. No point even bringing them up. The 60th anniversary completely backs this up when the Doctor loses and is like "I won the first time." and the Toymaker was like "Best 2 outta 3!" So, clearly this is only their second meeting.
60’s era vs modern day era. People must remember that it’s a different time. The costume wouldn’t have been seen as ‘racist’ back then. People are way too apologetic for the past. By all means, update the costume. There’s nothing wrong with that and it’s perfectly clear who the character is without the old costume. Just don’t bang on at how it’s so racist.
I agree. Also the OG costume looks like a king from a deck of cards which fits the game theme pretty well. IDK if that was meant or not and I can see parts of Chinese traditional clothing in it. But I think they should of made it look more like a king from cards. But tbh I do like the new design and can live with it
thnx for the link - as someone only familiar with Dr Who from Tom Baker onwards and only on ‘the tellie’ - any context for The Toymaker is really helpful - I read thru all the comments as well as the blog post - am glad I did cause they put the blogger’s opinions in context 🤦♀️ sorry am starting to sound all timey whimey 🤦♀️ thnx for the link
In Science Fantasy, demons are defined by their names and natures. We humans who live in meatspace have bones and blood. The Toymaker is a living idea. He is made of behaviour and promises. A demon will keep to the word of a contract. Not doing so would be like trying to move without a skeleton, they wouldn't be themselves. The Celestial Toymaker is a maker and player of games. That's how he sees the world, and how he interacts with it, and he can't exist outside it.
You know, i am noticing similarities between the Toymaker and other entities in scifi. The Q from Star Trek, the Beyonders from Marvel, Mr. Mxyzptlk from DC Comics, exc. Interesting though, with a multiverse involved in many of them that the Toymaker has just been having fun in other universes. Different names and faces, but him non the less.
It is possible. There's another RUclips video about Mr. Mxyzptlk (MM) that provides evidence that MM is the same person in every appearance, and may also be The Impossible Man at Marvel Comics. To me, MM and The Toymaker are very similar. Mr. Mxyzptlk has unlimited power to do anything he wants. His only limitations is the ones he places on himself, and he always lives up to his word.
You as an honest and intriguing individual have inspired me to join your hoard. I say this honestly, your speech; specifically pronunciation requires work. I find your Tempo and timbre melodic. I am quite deaf and found myself, rewinding often to piece together your speech. I wish you well and can't wait to see how you improve; belief instilled, expectation eager.
It is strange that he is underutilised considering he is immortal and he is a great nemesis like The Master. I like the casting of him in the 60s and the recent episode. I feel like someone like the Celestial Toymaker would have been a greater threat in the series. An immortal who plays games and can distort reality. You can virtually do anything with him
GREAT NEW LOGO DESIGN!!! I suppose that background is a Celestial key or transported or the like from the past(Pond or River era ?) . Anyway how could the Toymaker be his Greatest VILLAN SURPASSING D AVROS 's Twisted Villainy !?(he always Creeped me out from Baker era to CPADLDi OR!! Is that why? Because he's Underestimated??!
I'm from asian myself (Malaysia) and I have a lot of Chinese friends and they literaly wouldn't care about the costume. For me I think Toymaker look more badass with that chinese emperor costume since it make him look like someone who like collecting antiques things. The new costume is just your average Donny from mall
As other comments mention "Celestial" used to be a racist term to refer to Asians. When mixed with an eastern monk costume it's not a good look and can be considered "Yellow Face".
@@comfi_monkee6239In that tale's defence, the outfit was chosen because they needed to raid the BBC backrooms, since most of budget was blown on the previous episode.
I have a theory that the Toymaker is a Timelord,as not only did they find his name in a Timelord database, but he has also changed his appearance each time he is seen, and so has his outfit, just like the Doctor,he also has a contained universe he presides in and controls, which indicates that it can be driven and controlled(like a TARDIS anybody?),and most of all like a TARDIS can be destroyed, yet this itself does not destroy its inhabitant(s),I think it’s too many coincidences to be coincidental at all.
The one issue I have after reading her essay is them saying that using the “N” word in there is a common American version of the children’s “Eenie meanie minney moe.” I am American and I was born in 1971 and have never heard that version until this discussion about it and a clip from the car guy using it. (Can’t think of his name or the show sorry) I have a vague memory or hearing that that was an old version but I would guess it wasn’t used in the US since maybe the 50’s except maybe in the south. I was raised in California which tends to be more progressive. Anyway I have also never heard of celestial being a racial slur either. I’m not saying these things don’t exist. I’m just saying I wouldn’t consider them common.
I was born in 1976 in Australia and I've heard Americans saying the n-word in the eenie-meanie rhyme, both in real life and on tv. Have you been deliberately trying to not notice the n-word your entire life or something? As to the word Celestial, it's a racial slur of Californian origin, your home state invented it! Back when the Chinese were coming to America before the Chinese Exclusion Act, they called their homeland "The Celestial Empire", and Californians quickly took to referring to all Asian people as "Celestials". Honestly, it was only in heavy use in California, and a bit in the UK. Fallen out of style now, but in the 1960s older people were still using it and there were still businesses that used the word in their names. "Common" is an interesting question here. Californians have probably made more progress than most American states, it's true, but racial slurs are still common today even in California. If you don't notice them I'd say that's more to do with you choosing to not notice it that them not being used.
@@Nick-pu3of I’m not saying racial slurs aren’t around. I’m just saying I have never heard that rendition of the playground game. I have heard the N word plenty just not in that context. I am in no way trying not to hear it. We always said tiger as a child and everyone I ever heard said tiger. As far as celestial is concerned it may have started in California but that doesn’t mean it was used. I grew up around all cultures I feel like I would have heard it. I had no idea that was a thing. I have asked family members and they didn’t either. It’s not common in the US that’s all I’m saying.
@@tonyarc9455 they made a couple comments about it and I responded. I enjoy Doctor Who I’m just saying these aren’t things I am personally familiar with.

As someone who has never seen the toymaker in classic who I'm so excited for this introduction of the toymaker in modern who I'm hesitant about Disney plus getting doctor who but oh well, what can you do
Im not the biggest doctor who fan (just an option). But the fact the toymaker kept showing up throughout the doctor's various reincarnations kind of diminishes it for me. I thought it was a villain who was only barely contained long ago who has now come back, with more power ans presentation, to wreak havoc on the doctor and his life. But now it's just kinda " *The villain that shows up every so often* ". Not a bad character per say, just makes it feel, to me, less dramatic.
Toying with time and realities of the timelines of the origins of the doctors regeneration from the first doctor to the events of the day of the doctor in a nano timeline of every doctors life's. Toymaker echoes his powers through time and time again? There's been a shadow over the doctors past involvement, and his memories were changed by a single certain powerful figure from the outset of the return of the 9th doctor or 10th. There's been some mysterious forces at work leading the doctor to this moment, and the doctor hasn't released a thing about it, but sometimes there's something he notices in the corner of his eye, then it's disappears a split second? This is the Toymaker his managed to hold of the distortion of reality with ease for now and then? One question is, who is the real face between the realities of this Toymaker? Is he related to the doctor as it could be said he might be the father of time and the doctors father? Or is he the first time lord the creator of the time lords a possible answer to be revealed?*
Tardis Central should be aware that the source you used to side-step (but at least you mentioned it) the controversy about the original character has SPECIFICALLY ASKED NOT TO BE CITED because it's an 11 year-old article and the author doesn't want a bunch of people jumping down her throat about "woke mind virus" BS (my words not hers). But I'm glad the controversy was mentioned here. You don't have to let the problematic first version ruin it for you if you're the kind of fan who gets excited about old character returning, but it's amazing how many "explained"/"lore" videos are out there right now that just ignore it completely. Not to mention comment sections full of people who don't know anything about it and just want anyone who points any of it out to have their voice taken away ala the Doctor in the original story.

What really scary about the toy maker he is pretty much an eldrich like existance he is literal walking god the doctor has always stood as a larger then life figure like of demigods of ancient myth which he probabaly did himself but to the toy maker he is no diffrent then a mere mortal an insect compared to the toy maker if he really wanted to destroy the doctor yet no the toy maker is the one giving them the handy cap the deal the homecourt advantage with the doctor only evee being able to run away from him or barely escaping and imprisoning him knowing full well its not going to last
Why doesn't he just got reborn in a mortal human lifetime if he's that bored. I mean I understand the boredom and I empathize a lot but frt why doesn't he just Kermit after wording and reaffirming reincarnation in a human lifetime for himself life anyone else

Oh dear. its not real you know
I wonder if the phone numbers in the circus poster will be activated when the episodes are aired? It "number not recognised" at the ..
Basically Mxyzptlk and Loki
For fellow Trekkies, its the Q
For us Whovians, its the Celestial Toymaker
He reminds me of the toy man superman villain, the riddler and Mr. Mxyzptlk combined in one
Just as long as the Toymaker isn't the Timeless Child
The Doctor is the Timeless Child
None of those audio books and such are canon. No point even bringing them up. The 60th anniversary completely backs this up when the Doctor loses and is like "I won the first time." and the Toymaker was like "Best 2 outta 3!" So, clearly this is only their second meeting.
Just because it is not canon, does not mean it is not worth mentioning them ;)

I can't believe I found your videos just now, they're of a great quality! I have a lot of catching up with your channel to do 🙈✨
This channel is very good. He goes over everything, and he has a voice which doesn't get annoying.
Thanks Mat, that means a lot! Welcome to the channel everyone :D

So what I gathered from this 8 and a half minute video is: “Toymaker is a god that got bored.”
You're very welcome
In Science Fantasy, demons are defined by their names and natures.
We humans who live in meatspace have bones and blood.
The Toymaker is a living idea. He is made of behaviour and promises.
A demon will keep to the word of a contract. Not doing so would be like trying to move without a skeleton, they wouldn't be themselves.
The Celestial Toymaker is a maker and player of games. That's how he sees the world, and how he interacts with it, and he can't exist outside it.
They got the best character from friends too play toymaker legendary
You mean How I Met Your Mother.

Question, where did the animated sequence come from that you used in talking about Dodo and Steven? Curious to know if that can be found anywhere.

I called it, now hopefully my other prediction comes true with him being the reason for David’s return
obviously lmao
It is strange that he is underutilised considering he is immortal and he is a great nemesis like The Master. I like the casting of him in the 60s and the recent episode. I feel like someone like the Celestial Toymaker would have been a greater threat in the series. An immortal who plays games and can distort reality. You can virtually do anything with him
But could get boring, fast.
Don't you love it when people you have never met get offended on your behalf?
There is always someone pretending to be offended by ridiculous nonsense in order to appear virtuous.
I had always assumed he is literally the maker of the greatest toy of all our universe
To be fair the toymaker might have made life itself since it is the “game” of life
Was Is the original toy maker costume not appropriate? I don’t understand what wrong with it ?

When Barney ran out of girls:

Why would you even care? None of it has ANYTHING to do with racial slurs. Just enjoy Doctor Who.
@@Nick-pu3ofas a Californian... I can assure you that for all their progressive ideals... California likes to ignore the contribution of Chinese migrants in the history of the state.
is this in the order of the toymakers timeline or the release dates? all the jumping around is confusing
So all along.
Doctor *Who* was the toymaker
This toy maker was also foreshadowed by Matt smiths doctor in the rings of akhaten.
Just to let everyone know the toy maker is a D.C. comics villain from 1943. So the Doctor belongs to DC Comics.
As someone who has never seen the toymaker in classic who I'm so excited for this introduction of the toymaker in modern who
I'm hesitant about Disney plus getting doctor who but oh well, what can you do
Dr Who vs Dr Horrible.
DOCTOR Who.
"Who" is about to explode. I think the Specials are giving us a soft reboot. This will be epic.
it will not be a soft reboot!
"They"? Surely it's an "It" as it an element of the universe.
So excited for this
Doctor Horrible vs Doctor Who
Im not the biggest doctor who fan (just an option).
If the toymaker is supposed to play a game with each time louds then why haven’t he done so ?
Awwww his outfit was cool like
nooooo, woopie referred to him as doctor who....... its the doctor, not doctor who.....
Whoopie Goldberg gets almost everything wrong.
Again, did anybody else mistake the Toy Maker for 11, (top hat and tails/ waving and dancing)?
Reminds me of The Grandmaster from Marvel Comics.
So dr who is the longest running series?
*The giggle*
Step 1: enter the universe and go to 1920s London, are you there? Good! 👍
Step 2: open a toy shop.
for this you will need a German accent. Have you got one? Ja!
👍
Step 3: create a doll with a particular hypnotic laugh. Got it? Good! 👍
Step 4: wait for the assistant of John logie Baird to come and buy a toy, sell him the toy you made in step 3.
Step 5: when the dolls effect begins in 2023, the doctor will come back to investigate. Wait for him then catch the audience up on the moffat era deaths. Done it? Good 👍
Step 6: wait for the doctor to challenge you to a game, but insist the game will be played in 2023
Step 7: got to 2023 and await the doctor. Also seize co trial of the unit laser that can destroy the satellites.
Step 8: when the doctor arrives and challenges you, shoot him with the laser because you want to play the next doctor not this one.
Step 9: trigger a regeneration and defeat the new doctor while he’s still in post regeneration delirium.
And it is onnnnnnnn. 😉

'The one who waits'. It's setting up a potential storyline, so no doubt we will find out
Except anything that isnt on TV is not cannon. All I care about is the 1966 episode.
That's cool, then that works for you :D The extra story's currently expand the character for the moment. Given the 60th is playing with "The Star Beast", it's not harm seeing what other stories could be connected.

I do hope they keep the idea of him being a time lord.
So wait how is the old costume problamatic?
Toymaker is no longer Celestial...
And why was the origional costume problematic?
The toymaker looks like a stephen moffet villian
DC Comics has a toy man too.
I so love Donna! “ then we go and KICK ITS ASS! I miss Donna, Donna Rocks!
I need to see this
Toymaker is Barney Stinson
This character is what piqued my interest about Dr. Who
What really scary about the toy maker he is pretty much an eldrich like existance he is literal walking god the doctor has always stood as a larger then life figure like of demigods of ancient myth which he probabaly did himself but to the toy maker he is no diffrent then a mere mortal an insect compared to the toy maker if he really wanted to destroy the doctor yet no the toy maker is the one giving them the handy cap the deal the homecourt advantage with the doctor only evee being able to run away from him or barely escaping and imprisoning him knowing full well its not going to last
These repeating clips images makes me dizzy 😵
the outfit seems more like the "i don't like it so its racist" or teens crying "my culture not your clothing" honestly
The original squid game
The original outfit isn't racist
NPH is so amazing even Jesus kicked him out over jealousy in heaven
1023 so 23 is the year
Why doesn't he just got reborn in a mortal human lifetime if he's that bored. I mean I understand the boredom and I empathize a lot but frt why doesn't he just Kermit after wording and reaffirming reincarnation in a human lifetime for himself life anyone else
The start of the special is just the Toymaker giving a youtuber apology for being racist.
