  • Inverness-born Josephine Tey (real name Elizabeth MacKintosh), was a popular Golden Age crime writer. Her first novel, The Man in the Queue (1929), introduced Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard. A Shilling for Candles, followed in 1936, and was used by Alfred Hitchcock as the basis for his 1937 film Young and Innocent. Her novel Brat Farrar, about an impeccable imposter, was made into a BBC television series. And the most famous Inspector Grant mystery, 1951’s The Daughter of Time, was voted the greatest mystery novel ever written by The British Crime Writers' Association.
Bestselling author Val McDermid, an ardent fan of Tey’s work, has chosen Miss Pym Disposes as the centrepiece of this collaboration between Backlisted podcast and Granite Noir. McDermid’s most recent novel, her 40th, is the bestselling Still Life, featuring DCI Karen Pirie of Police Scotland’s Historic Cases Unit. This year she also released a collection of short stories, called Christmas is Murder, contributed to an anthology of crime stories called Afraid of the Christmas Lights, and with Professor Jo Sharp, edited Imagine a Country, essays offering visions of a new future from an array of voices.
Backlisted Podcast - which has topped a million downloads, and was recently chosen as one of Oprah Magazine’s best book podcasts - is dedicated to old books, and hosted by John Mitchinson and Andy Miller. Every episode features a guest, usually a writer, who’s chosen a beloved book that they want to introduce to a wider audience. Always erudite, sometimes silly, and steadfastly passionate about the magic of literature, it’s a standout podcast for bibliophiles. We’re delighted to welcome them to Granite Noir.

Val McDermid ; well known purveyor of serial killer drivel
should not be linked in any way with a gifted writer like
    Josephine Tey. !
