  • With their new stadium under construction, Wales home games were played in Wembley in 1999. England were hoping to land a Grand Slam in their own capital city but Scott Gibbs had other ideas and scored this legendary try. Neil Jenkins then nervelessly landed the extras.

I watched this in a pub in London with my mates as a cocky 20 something! We was laughing and cheering at half time! There was a couple of older Welsh guys from our rugby club having a quiet pint, at the final whistle they said nothing just a glance was enough. I learned a few lessons that day, respect and dignity in victory, and don’t count your chickens, especially when playing rugby against the Welsh! Deja fuckin vu!!!😆😂🤣

I was in a bar in Fuengirola, Spain, where we were outnumbered in a pub called Alfies 20-1 by English lads, and my m8 had got so pissed the night before that he was sleeping on the beach. When we left, his 2 footprints were visible by sand. It was 2008. We won somehow and the English lads came over and shook our hands, we didn't gloat as we were looking deep in the souls of our players and thinking we might have a grand slam on the go here, and they did. Us Welsh are not all bad m8, and neither is the English boys. Proper sport is rugby.

That, folks, was a Rugby League try...
"Scott [Quinnell] and I called a move we had never practised," says Gibbs. "We'd both returned from rugby league and during the week I had talked about a play we used at St Helens that the scrum-half Bobbie Goulding used a lot. The forwards would pack the midfield and he would run across, showing the ball to the opposition before slipping a short pass to someone bursting up.
"It was often devastating. I devised a version of our own when Scott [Quinnell] would get the ball, run across the field, taking defenders with him, and I would come charging through at an angle, take a short pass and blast through the defence. We talked about it but never rehearsed it. We were all knackered when it came to that lineout and I told Scott to call it."
When Gibbs received the ball he cut to the right before straightening up and riding Rodber's challenge, skipping over Neil Back's ankle tap and evading Matt Dawson's lunge. He was by now well inside England's 22, legs pumping. He swerved outside the England full-back, Matt Perry, and with an outrageous swing of the hips, veered right leaving the last line of defence, Steve Hanley, like a spinning top. "Everyone was drifting from left to right and I went against the grain." - From 'The Guardian', 13th March 2013.
