When I started riding I had a huge fear about riding after sunset. So much so if I was caught out I would walk on the footpath. Then I joined an all night ride with experienced Audax/Randonneur riders and had my fears dissolved. Secondary and unsealed back country roads where national parks abut brings other fears though. Wildlife. Kangaroos and possibly worse, wombats, will have you buying the best lights and your eyes wide open like dinner plates. Other than that, the cool air, quiet roads and surrounds makes for a relaxing ride.
Looks like fun times with a fun group. I like the idea of pushing on gravel and regrouping on pavement. Hmm, I'm also considering going back to Germany in a few years just like the Fräulein did; seems to be better for retirees.
When I retire, I plan to reside about six or seven months of the year in the USA, Australia and a couple of spots in Europe or South America (to be investigated), the rest of the time.
I still don't get Unbound Gravel as the new name of the big gravel race in Kansas. And I don't have a problem with people having a problem with the previous name and evidently it was a problem in need of a resolution. But couldn't 'dirty' be replaced with something like 'gritty' and call it K Grit for short.

What tires sizes did you guys used to ride on your cross bikes?
I was rolling the Michelin Jet, which expanded to about 700c x 34mm.
