It'd be interesting to hear why you initially believed it was a bad idea, just to understand your train of thought then.
I think he just said he thought it was crazy not necessarily bad. I heard this to mean he was thrown off by seeing such a novel use of the bootstrap and as with all novel ideas, it took him some time to digest.
