Dear mother how I will write this line When I know I'm counting time I'm tired and I'm scared I'm waiting and death's my friend To say in God we trust not for this Oh the death and glory boys not for this Dear beloved try to write to you Through the senseless deaths of a million troops I'm waiting my time is near As my tears wash away my ears To say in God we trust not for this Oh the death and glory boys not for this Where I walk where I see The haunting flares where my friends bleed I see the face of the enemy Of a man or boy who is just like me Now you're not there All the tears we bled Cut through like winters rain Can't you feel the pain And if I could ever sleep again I know till the end of time I'd hear Their screams of pain Dulce dulce decorum Dulce dulce decorum Dulce Dear mother I'll write to you
It's unfortunate The Damned never perform this song live. It would've been perfect at their "A Night of a Thousand Vampires" concert which just came out on DVD/Blu-ray. This is my favorite song by them.

The ONLY Remembrance Day song that matters whether or not ya know the experience of DEATH. A great song from 1986 or whatever you know then or now... Gotta hand it to the best band out of the 70's punk scene!
Their combination of classical elements and punk rock aspects REALLY made them stand out even though other groups did it too. It seems to be something of a trademark of theirs. You see this also in their song Tightrope Walk.
I'm pretty sure this song is what first interested me in the carnage that was WWI - think I heard it (aged 13) before the Wilfred Owens poem that inspired it. Really powerful, especially with that voice.
Kinda weird because the recording of Churchill that precedes the song on the album is him talking about the valiant British fliers during the Battle of Britain in 1940...
I used to find the later incarnation of The Damned a sort of boring betrayal of the early punk magic. Now I am forty though and the sublimity of what they did 85-86 I find ... sublime.
Dan Thompson I agree, I think this was my favourite incarnation of the band because of all the things they could do. Phantasmagoria is an epic masterpiece, and Anything had some really high points, including this brilliant song. Roman was a brilliant Musician, Bryn (RIP chap) was an underappreciated Bassist, Rat was always fantastic, and Dave is, well, Dave.
Thank you for this video! By the way, is there a full The Damned concert video of the first half of 1980s? I respect this band for the legacy they gave us in punk music, but I love their gothic input much more.
Great song and very heart felt there Mr Vanian...Where was this filmed from? I have them doing a version of this and Roman stops it half way through because there were people gobbing at Dave and not showing enough respect which I thought was totally spot on!!! Nice bloke Roman.
@@marinamoore7167 Yeah I remember asking Roman about that track and I think he said that he was inspired by it from when he was a youngster. Please do give Roman my Regards I only ever got to meet him the once when him and DV played in the Chords at Windsor Old Trout. Think Bryn may of been there as well. Totally agree that Roman didn't get enough credit...Really hoped that he would of made a guest appearance at The Albert Hall still to this day don't know why he left The Damned when he seemed such an integral part of the band!! :-(
@@marinamoore7167 Sorry to hear that things ended in such a bitter way I was watching that Don't you wish we were dead last year..And they seemed to skip the whole of Strawberries, Anything, and Phantasmagoria era of The Damned which really surprised me. Had no idea that DV was that cold poor old Bryn (R.I.P) I remember DV took quiet a shine to my ex girlfriend when I met him and seemed a decent enough sort of chap but of course I am just looking through a fans eyes.I will definitely endeavour to check out Romans album. Is it on Spotify Marina!?
Either Sunday 9th November at the Hammersmith Palais or Wednesday 12th November at the Hammersmith Odeon.... My guess is it's Hammersmith Palais... And we were mighty relieved because the following night the Monday 10th November they cancelled @ the Odeon :o :o :o
Miami Vice brought me here. This is Real music!
80's Forever!!
Dear mother how I will write this line
When I know I'm counting time
I'm tired and I'm scared
I'm waiting and death's my friend
To say in God we trust not for this
Oh the death and glory boys not for this
Dear beloved try to write to you
Through the senseless deaths of a million troops
I'm waiting my time is near
As my tears wash away my ears
To say in God we trust not for this
Oh the death and glory boys not for this
Where I walk where I see
The haunting flares where my friends bleed
I see the face of the enemy
Of a man or boy who is just like me
Now you're not there
All the tears we bled
Cut through like winters rain
Can't you feel the pain
And if I could ever sleep again
I know till the end of time I'd hear
Their screams of pain
Dulce dulce decorum
Dulce dulce decorum
Dulce
Dear mother I'll write to you

WOW never saw them play this, let alone in the song's heyday. Always wanted to see the drummer perform it. Thanx for this!
Great Song! Thanks for sharing!

Maybe look up the song 1916 by Motorhead. Lemmy was a good friend of the Damned and wrote an AMAZING antiwar song...
This song is not called "Dulce". It is called "In Dulce Decorum".

Would have worked better live if they'd sped it up a little bit. LOVE the drumming though, Rat Millar is such a great show drummer!

WILL YOU MARRY ME ALSO, JONATHAN WHITE?
Can anyone tell me who was playing bass ? It's clearly not the late Bryn Merrick.
It is him
Lorraine Kelly and Bryn look alike
