“I’m 28 years old now. I used to desire an ideal life when I was a teenager. I don’t see it in this way anymore. There is simply no ideal life. It is only about choosing what kind of regrets you are willing to live with.” Hu Bo (1988 - 2017)

This was a great film. Probably the best Chinese movie I've ever seen. Mainly because it doesn't try to hide the real face of the country and puts some of the hardships the people there face on display for all to see. I wasn't aware that Hu Bo killed himself, but from that I alone I can infer that he had a difficult life, and he immortalized it in this film.
@@doctor9ism Disagree strongly, the hopelessness of the entire Chinese political system is a central theme of the film.. It is why he killed himself. Nothing ever changes because nobody wants to get involved in any disputes. Nobody wants to help one another, everyone is out for themselves, dog eat dog world. That is the true China.
RussianCommissar actually, there are absolutely no political matters in this film. The director didn’t want to criticize anything, instead, he just wanted to express the feelings any person could have, it’s 100% pure. And he killed himself because of the disagreements between him and the producer, who wanted to cut this film to earn more.
@@HeyRussianCommissar How is this situation of "dog eat dog world" different from any other country in the world???? The biggest irony of this movie is this is the type of movie that the Chinese censors and government would hate to promote, because it doesn't paint China in a glamorous light. But that's the very reason why this movie is so moving: it's the real thing, it's human and moving and beautiful and painful. It makes me actually want to visit China, and put myself in the character's shoes. It's not about presenting yourself or your country in a perfect light; when you show that your people feel pain and anger and strife like everyone else, then everyone starts to admire and want to learn from you. Hu Bo in one movie does more to advance Chinese cinema than all the other movies that are watered down to make foreigners think that China is perfect or wonderful. More of this, less of that. Anguish is beautiful and moving; Chinese cinema is some of the best at expressing this kind of internal pain. Bravo Hu Bo; you left us too soon. Godspeed.

The Cat Okay Mr.Edgy! It’s not a cowardly way out, Life is painful and sometimes those already hurt can’t find the strength and sometimes we give up. Doesn’t mean they are a coward though
we should understand that not everyone has the same strength as other people that they went through so much pain but still continue and trying to make their life as best as they can...from the other hand other people don't have that strength ( cause they didn't hard-pressed from a young age) and when they faced the hard face of the life they just gave up...BUT everyone has different experiences in life and it's very important not confuse our experiences with someone else cause we don't know if someone went through hell or not...
