      @Lustbutler The producer asked him to cut down the length of the movie in consideration of the box office. Hu refused, and the producer even deprived his copyright of owing this movie and told Hu that he had to spend 3.5 million to regain the copyright if he still refused to cut down the length. Hu then committed suicide.

    This was a great film. Probably the best Chinese movie I've ever seen. Mainly because it doesn't try to hide the real face of the country and puts some of the hardships the people there face on display for all to see. I wasn't aware that Hu Bo killed himself, but from that I alone I can infer that he had a difficult life, and he immortalized it in this film.

    • @doctor9ism
      @doctor9ism 5 лет назад +47

      The movies purpose is not about showing the hardship of China. You are missing the point. It’s more of a philosophical question over life itself.

    • @HeyRussianCommissar
      @HeyRussianCommissar 4 года назад +8

      @@doctor9ism Disagree strongly, the hopelessness of the entire Chinese political system is a central theme of the film.. It is why he killed himself. Nothing ever changes because nobody wants to get involved in any disputes. Nobody wants to help one another, everyone is out for themselves, dog eat dog world. That is the true China.

      actually, there are absolutely no political matters in this film. The director didn’t want to criticize anything, instead, he just wanted to express the feelings any person could have, it’s 100% pure. And he killed himself because of the disagreements between him and the producer, who wanted to cut this film to earn more.

Are other countries really so perfect that people are dancing hand in hand singing kumbaya and don't ever kill themselves? Your critique suffers from ignorant, childlike understanding of China and reductionism to " depression because CCP" lol.

    The biggest irony of this movie is this is the type of movie that the Chinese censors and government would hate to promote, because it doesn't paint China in a glamorous light. But that's the very reason why this movie is so moving: it's the real thing, it's human and moving and beautiful and painful. It makes me actually want to visit China, and put myself in the character's shoes. It's not about presenting yourself or your country in a perfect light; when you show that your people feel pain and anger and strife like everyone else, then everyone starts to admire and want to learn from you. Hu Bo in one movie does more to advance Chinese cinema than all the other movies that are watered down to make foreigners think that China is perfect or wonderful. More of this, less of that. Anguish is beautiful and moving; Chinese cinema is some of the best at expressing this kind of internal pain.
    Bravo Hu Bo; you left us too soon. Godspeed.

      we should understand that not everyone has the same strength as other people that they went through so much pain but still continue and trying to make their life as best as they can...from the other hand other people don't have that strength ( cause they didn't hard-pressed from a young age) and when they faced the hard face of the life they just gave up...BUT everyone has different experiences in life and it's very important not confuse our experiences with someone else cause we don't know if someone went through hell or not...

    To being honest i didnt like it very much , it wasnt for the lenght itselft, is mostly for the way of how its was narrated and the acting in general its seems me mediocre and too much pause in places and moments where it wasnt really necesary ,and didnt make me empathize in any way as well as to actually portray iin a correct way the hardships that they where going through, and the ending it also wasnt my cup of tea. Althought i really respect each one opinion, i also have some movies that are my favorites that i pretty sure that many people would think that are really bad but to me are something like masterpieces, i could reccomend to those interested in one called *Ode to the Goose* beautiful movie and its feels like some kind of nostalgia, and its like you where there feeling the breeze of the air as well as like each day goes by, has some nice messages that you could catch. Another one i think of the same director called *fukuoka* also amaizing movie detaches the same feelings that the previous mentioned i reaccomended them 100%.
