    This song was written in 1979. It was set during the Irish potato famine in the 1840s and was about a young man who stole food so his children and was arrested and sent to an Australian penal colony called Botany Bay. I like this version, but as a folk song, is just beautifully tragic.

    The British Empire sold prisoners to the various colonies. It didn't matter. Debt, religious differences, politics differences- Scots, Welch. Irish, English thousands were sold. I have a ancestor who was a master carpenter. He became indebted. He was placed in Debtor's prison. He and 1000 others were sold. He was sold to a plantation in Virginia. He is buried their-John Hollis.

    As you say, this would be a blast listening to in a bar on a Saturday night on Charles or maybe Salem Street in Boston. This is the background of the song;
    "The Fields of Athenry" is a song written in 1979 by Pete St. John in the style of an Irish folk ballad. Set during the Great Famine of the 1840s, the lyrics feature a fictional man from near Athenry in County Galway, who stole food for his starving family and has been sentenced to transportation to the Australian penal colony at Botany Bay. It has become a widely known, popular anthem for Irish sports supporters. Thanks for doing something new 👌

    I love this song. It's not exactly a party song, but I love it no matter where or how it's sung.
    You Tube has a serious
    but fun video called "The Fields of Athenry, at Athenry..The Largest
    Street Performance in the World" I hope y'all watch it just for your own pleasure and satisfaction. Nothing to do with the Murphys.

    Awesome choice! One of my all time favorite Celtic Punk bands. Check out the Murphy's cover of Pete Seeger's song "Blackout". You might also look into Flogging Molly "Light of a Fading Star" and The Tossers doing "Rocky Road to Dublin". Keep up the great work.

    Celtic punk rock jam band...
    Personally, I can only take so much of his voice at one sitting though.

    Got to say man, your music spans a shit load of genres and it's helped me expand my mind. I was mostly a metal head. You should do a Gunship song sometime. "Tech Noir" is pretty good.
