I have worked and been alongside Japanese (outside of Japan) in the early 80's. I spent countless hours discussing our cultural differences. This is the main gap that you need to bridge when you are with Japanese men and women. They are brought and learn in a complete different manner which makes it so difficult for us to merge and immerse.
You may tell me it is true for every culture. I would agree with you. I am European, and I have lived as an expatriate in many different countries. Including Asian ones. I never had a problem to make myself accepted.
Japan still remains a mystery to me....

I biked (motorcycle - called bike in Japan) around most of Japan in the 1970’s, and in my opinion the island of Hokkaido is Japan’s best kept secret. Not only is the scenery beautiful and the food delicious, but the people are very open and friendly. Most tourists think the Japanese are very courteous as a whole, but a lot of the courtesies extended are merely custom. However, on Hokkaido, it is very genuine.
