Right on junk!! I love watching your videos. I was 4 in 78' when starwars got to michigan. Huge influence on me an my values. Thanks for reminding me of a wonderful time to be a kid!!
That prototype Imperial Troop Transport looks AWESOME!!! Sleek and powered up with that giant engine / gun thing on top - I WANT ONE! :) The “Attack the Death Star” game was a lot of fun. A friend of mine had it - loved playing it. The “prototype” die-cast series 2 ships ... I could SWEAR I saw that photo of those early versions in a “catalog” that came with Star Wars vehicles or play sets way back in 1978 or 79. I always wanted the cantina play set and the “land of the Jawas” play set. The escape pod ... so much story potential right there!!! “Quick Luke and Leia, jump in the escape pod to escape the stormtroopers!” Or “Quick, Han and Chewie, the Falcon is about to be captured by the Death Star! Race to the escape pod and hope that Luke finds us in his X-Wing!” Sigh. So many stories... Great video, Junkman!!!
Thanks, Junkman. I love how they put a Stormtrooper as the bartender in the Cantina playset shot. Keep up the awesome content. Love from Glasgow, Scotland.
My friend was a child model for kenner. He has original pictures, and blueprint type ads, etc. He has a whole binder filled with original prints and ads. Most of it is star wars stuff. Its very interesting.
Absolutely loved the die-cast vehicles, made for perfect birthday presents - the only one I didn't have as a kid was the 'Imperial Cruiser', more's the pity.
That droid crawler used that forward= straight. Reverse= turn R/C button thing. Gawwd they made a lot of toys with that system. I remember Power Command made a jeep called fat wheels. You blew up the bouncy tires with your mouth! And it had a steering wheel and actually drove anyway you wanted. Fun as heck & I'm still into R/C.
I think they refer to the trays in the vinyl collector's case as a "Death Star" display stage because they have a pattern on them that is similar to the walls of the Death Star.
Junkbro is connected to get all these... He goes out at nite to meet strangers in dark alleys with his trench coat and fedora. He's getting the "goods" for us all.
International Velvet was a 1878 film about a girl (Tatum O' Neal) who rides horses in competitions and is a loose sequel to the 1944 film National Velvet, starring Liz Taylor.
1:30 - you know I'm down for some of that! Who else is willing to bet Death Star Droid was an early version of Darth Vader? Punch Chewbacca? No, thanks. I like my arms in their sockets. I had Six Million Dollar Man Movie Viewer cassettes - I would have lost my sh*t if I knew I could have gotten Star Wars cassettes! That Death Star game-board is actually pretty nice looking.
It’s mind-blowing how early in the game Boba was produced I guess he was intended to be the teaser toy for the new movie the following year and to link in with the Holiday special the year before, basically to keep the buzz (not that I can see that there was any need) or it came from Lucasfillm (Lucas) direct, either way I’d love to know the thinking so if you’re digging and asking questions, maybe a video on the subject ‘why tf did Kenner start production on a side-character 2 years before he was introduced on the big screen!?’
I still have that Destroy The Death Star Game. Found it at a church swap meet for like a quarter. Even have the 12" R2-R2 , it contained two plates you can pull out of the back. One of them says Death Star Plans
There's always a chance that each of your videos will be the first of your videos someone sees, so it's always good to repeat all that info over and over and over. And who cares what people write in the comments: comments are good for the RUclips algorythm. And yes, it's Power Droid, not Gonk. :P
The backdrop for the cantina is a different color I think from the production one. The Falcon looked like something for Playskool. The proto Boba Fett was offered in a toy magazine way back in the 90's. It was a classified toy shop/news paper in B&W. Who knows if the ad was for real if you ordered it?
I never had the Star Wars vinyl carrying case but I do have one of the Empire cases with trays filled with figures from all 3 movies. I've held on to that thing since I was 4 years old. Only a small rip in one of the corners. They were bad for that after opening and closing them 15 times a day over many years! It's been locked up in storage for 10 years now. I'll prolly tear up the day I pull them out, not gonna lie. 😂 And I confess, I hated the vinyl capes on my figures cause they didn't look like the capes in the movies. My dumbass took them off and threw them away! What the he'll was I thinking?!!
When you say you don't notice anything different with the Cantina playset in that photo....someone may have mentioned it already but looks like the floor is a huge sticker to make it look like a field stone type floor rather than a stickerless winnie the pooh coloured floor.
Pretty cool! Really good video. And I'm the exact opposite of you. My favorite era is 1985...well, technically 1984 - 1988 Glasslite figures. 1984 and 1985 are what I remember from my youth because I was born in 1980. And I have a fascination with those '88 Brazil figures despite that I didn't know they existed back then. I just love the era. Speaking completely off the subject, can we finally call the vintage era 1978 - 1988? Glasslite were officially licensed. It's sort like how the last 17 SHOULD be called the last 15. But yeah, if we count Vlix (and most of the collector community does) then it should be 1978 - 1988. Regardless, cool video!
I had the blowup R2-D2 punching bag thingy. Far off memories - I was about 3-year old or something'ish. I think my baby sitters son had the Darth Vader tie fighter and can remember the red LED - highly desirable.
Who would ever want to punch a jawa? I call abuse! Prime-Time Charlie should call his congressman (congressjawa?) I also really wanted that remote controlled sandcrawler as well. That prototype troop transport actually looks cooler that what we actually got, in my opinion.
I still have my old remote control sandcrawler It looks slightly different than the picture you showed. the cockpit seems narrower on the one I have, And there are no lights inside.the remote also looks different.
Hey "That Junkman", If You Want To PRONOUNCE Chris' Last Name, It Is; GEOR (Like In "GEORGE") GOU (Like In "GOO" , Think "GOO" Be Gone) LIAS (Like In "LEE - US")
Hey Junkman, I've got a request. Maybe you'll think it's a good idea, maybe you won't? I know you've done separate video's on this stuff before, but I think a great video would be you breaking down the categories of which vintage brands are official (Kenner, Palitoy, Glasslite, etc), which vintage figures are bootlegs (Poland...was Lily Ledi bootleg??? I don't know???), and which stuff is considered repro (this would include the new Hasbro retro line and other's). And which one's are considered knock off's. Some things I'm just not sure about and I've looked into it before, but you always investigate much better than I can. I just think it would be an interesting and educational video. Break each category down. Maybe show a few examples of each. The community would probably enjoy it. It would let everyone know what is out there, and what they can be collecting depending on their own personal wants. I understand if you think it's a bad idea.
heres a very good question "when the ROTJ film came out 1982, I wonder why they dint re introduce the the DEATHSTAR playset because the falcon was re introduce in all 3 toy lines why not the DEATHSTAR
Could have actually showed an image of what we got to compare to the prototypes. Also, back in the day, they were either large or 11 inch action figures. If they were 12 inch, we probably would have said foot tall.
In my opinion the cantina was best play set. Not to big. Displays easily. A pivotal scene in the movie. And who doesn't like a bar. 😀🍻😉 Moe's Tavern. CHEERS.
I wonder how many of my old star wars toys from then might be in someone's collection today. I know i tradeed some mini die cast stuff for tattoos about 20 yrs ago. So they definitely are worth even more now...
The original 3.75" Boba Fett is way cooler than what we got but because a boy choked to death on a missile, they had to redesign the figure. Now that original design for the Imperial Troop Transport is so much cooler than the final product. They really messed up on that! I wonder if anybody has made a custom of that.
International Velvet was a 1970’s film about horses and horse-riding. It was a sequel to an Elizabeth Taylor film of the 1940’s! Totally not an adult film. In fact the original film featured Mickey Rooney and Angela Lansbury. 😁
I kind of wish they would revisit these playsets in a large scale for display use with black series figures. The playset they released for Solo was complete trash.
Could you imagine the price tag though? Heck, $399 for newer release Falcon!! Why? Cuz we"l PAY!! I got SCREW** with Mandos ship!! Plus, we need an 6" piloted X Wing first 😋
@@GS-ry6on Well, something like the sandcrawler set is really just a plastic base with cardboard. If you scaled it up the cost would scale similarly, but probably wouldn't be untenable. The Black series is nominally a collectors series, so a higher cost is expected on some level. If it went through Pulse & online retailers I think it might be successful. As long as they laminated the backdrop properly it could last for the life of the buyer at the very least. The ones that are backdrops are really all you can get away with reasonably. Something as involved as the Falcon would probably be a Haslab exclusive at that scale. The price would be astronomical...
I've been wondering about that! I've seen Snaggletooth packed with an Imperial rifle a few times and some of the photographs for catalogs and in posters. Is it random, or did he come with the rifle on certain cards? Anybody know? In any case, I think it looks way better with an Imperial rifle. Red Snaggletooth is one of my favorites and I love that he can hold either gun just fine. That's my boy! :) haha Thanks for the video :)

Sounded like would have been better then what we got! 6-7 different sounds. I always made my own "Pew-Pew" like we all did lol
Thanks, Junkman. I love how they put a Stormtrooper as the bartender in the Cantina playset shot. Keep up the awesome content. Love from Glasgow, Scotland.
The droids are close to the cantina... But not inside! Well done Kenner.
The fact you noticed. Well done Lunar!
Best Star Wars content. So much fun. Keep it up!

Brilliant stuff love these videos that delve into the Kenner archives 😀

R5-D4 was the first SW action figure I had. SO many great memories!
I think they refer to the trays in the vinyl collector's case as a "Death Star" display stage because they have a pattern on them that is similar to the walls of the Death Star.
Great job at finding this random SW history!
Junkbro is connected to get all these... He goes out at nite to meet strangers in dark alleys with his trench coat and fedora. He's getting the "goods" for us all.
Regarding the puzzles, the Stormtrooper in the Detention Block hallway and the one with the Sandtroopers were my favorites. Love the Stormtroopers.
Pretty cool segment. The troop transporters nose like something stolen from a Snowspeeder
I think that the prototype Prisoner Transport looks really cool. I'd be happy if they made this today.
Love these design video! I'm a geek! Thx! 🤓
I loved my escape pod!
Thank you Junkman..for informing us of this..
I loved Kenny Baker after seeing him in TIME BANDITS.
R2 D2 was always my favorite Driod!
C3Piss Off!
Absolutely loved that movie viewer. Eventually I bought one to use at home. LOL
"Evil Grey" is like regular grey, but a little more on the dark side.
23:10, the design style of that Troop Transporter looks reminiscent of the Cruisemissile Trooper that was produced in the 1990s.

If you paid a lot for the Fett and it turned out to be a copy or something else...there was little you could do. It was in the days of mail order

The final released version of the Millennium Falcon looked a lot better.
Good video
International velvet🤣👏sounds like sumthn w a 25cent admission fee in 70s!?
They are called GONK because it is a G.N.K. Droid ;)
If I am correct, the name gonk droid comes from the lego star wars games.
That and before that because of the sound the power droid made in the movie. GONK GONK. 😆
