Hope your surgery(s) go well. I also had a cyst removed at L4 but anyway, I thought you had said that you probably wouldn't get the Z9...? Would you still be allowed to land at that military base with current aggressive activity in the Ukraine?
Hello! Thanks a lot for your video, I got some inspiration. I have a question. Can my lenses (modern lenses canon ef 70-200 f4 and Sony 70-200 f4 e-mount) get fungus? I am really afraid for them
This video is from a year ago. It looks in your more recent posts like you have overcome the health challenges. Especially since you are getting ready for another Antarctica adventure. Hopefully this time everyone makes it. A trip I would one day love to make. The photos you shared are fantastic. Thank you!
Nigel, as an amateur photographer with a bit of heart trouble and a defibrillator, I often feel very physically limited compared to other photographers. I can’t tell you enough how inspiring it is to see all of the great work you do with a pacemaker.
HAHA! Stamped with covid! 😅 I am very happy you guys had a great expedition, but damn I am sad I missed out - especially on the whales and that storm! Gorgeous Photos!
I had almost the exact same injury about 5 years ago. Follow the rehab, don`t get ahead of yourself and your recovery should bring you back stronger. Great images!
What an amazing experience being able to see all that beauty in Antarctica! Thank you for sharing those spectacular pictures you took with the 100-400mm! It is an amazing lens in the hands of an amazing photographer! Keeping you in our thoughts for a speedy recovery! Things will get better than this!
What a gift you have with the camera, Nigel! Your photos are the best I have seen from this trip. I especially liked your 2 meter pano. My favorite lens is the 100-400mm and I am glad to hear it worked so well on your trip. You have such a good eye for composition and light. I learn so much from viewing your photos and watching your videos.Good luck with your MRI.
Glad to hear there are so many safeguards and restrictions regarding visiting Antarctica. It would be nice if this pristine landscape never becomes a tourist destination.
That will never happen, not only for environmental reasons, but also because there is a secret UFO base. Not kidding. The evidence is more than enough to convict someone of murder. As a famous UFO/UAP researcher said, the amount of evidence on the issue, "is an embarrassment of riches!" Okay enough crazy talk, great video, Z9 and 100-400mm both look amazing, although I'd much rather have the 70-200mm f/2.8 S with 1.4x TC and a second setup with a longer lens, I personally have and love the 500mm f/4E VR FL and since it works so well with the TC-14E III, I'd probably have a 1.4x TC on it as well for Antartica! You obviously can get away with a 400mm and Z9 due to the megapixel count. But I really think if at all possible you'd be better off with a 500pf or something like the new 800mm f/6.3 S! I just got back from Yosemite and I used my 70-200mm and 500mm FL lenses much more often than I thought I would. For the "Firefall" event a couple weeks ago, I almost exclusively used the 500mm FL and mostly with the TC-14E III.
@@aorr When considering the sheer size and scale of Antarctica, and comparing the numbers of tourists it sees compared to pretty much any other location on Earth, I think it can still safely be regarded as pristine...
Exceptional scenery. I never knew about the rules and restrictions when visiting Antarctica but I support it 100%. Anything to protect such a beautiful environment. Striking and beautiful images too.
Fascinating video with beautiful/stunning stills and video content. Thank you for sharing. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery from your knee injury!
What an amazing insight into what looks like a spectacular trip. Looking forward to seeing next weeks video & more shots! Good luck with the ongoing recovery.
I enjoyed yours and Adam's video of this trip. Don't believe I could make such a trip but it is great to see it through your eyes. I hope everything with the knee goes well.

@@NigelDanson yes totally, Not sure where you are based but Addenbrookes in Cambridge were offering private appointments at fairly short notice as most private hospitals don’t offer this service .
Nigel best wishes for a speedy recovery sir! I loved my trip in 2016 and we were able to go on land a fairly good bit... disinfectant yes, bag seed check no, but we were not allowed to physically disturb any wild life... so if a penguin came and sat on your shoe, you couldn't move until the penguin decided to move on... :) Yes! the wind at Deception Island was intense. The Blues in the Ice were just wow. Beautiful content Nigel, simply fantastic. WOW that Pano !!
Love the penguins at the end! They really are quite humourous. Thanks for sharing. I've been enjoying each of the videos that various ones of you have done from the Antartica trip.
Wow, I am blown away seeing that large pano you shared. That’s a great recap and recount of your trip to Antartica, I really like the images you brought back to shared. Thank. If you would share a bit more on the number of images captured and technical details to create this pano. Thanks so much for sharing this review of the Z100-400.
Was there in December 2019. Most beautiful place I have ever experienced. Thanks for bringing back the memories. Seems you missed the fun of the Drake Shake though!
Such an engaging video; I thoroughly enjoyed it. I LOVE (love!) your panoramic shot with its amazing colour variations, well done! What a fantastic memory. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome Nigel! A couple of weeks back you released a video where you fell over, I commented that I want to see the fall in a comedic way (not to see you hurt yourself). Glorious images. Or perhaps more appropriately, a glorious place. Thank you for sharing these. Stumbled upon this as i’m considering buying the 100-400. Cheers
What a great experience Nigel. A lot of hard work and endeavour for sure. Some wonderful shots. Particularly like the one just after 20:00 and of course the panorama. Really looking forward to seeing the next video that you have teased us with !
Nigel sorry to hear about your accident. Thank you for sharing your adventure, Enjoy hearing your experience and your tips. “God speed on your recovery!”.🙏🙏 Take care and be safe. “Go Giants!”
In the clouds at 19:20 it looks like there are white waterfalls or ice walls in the clouds in the orange sunlight part of the clouds in that iceberg shot, very spectacular indeed! I have a 100-400mm and150-600mm lens and they do help you to get close when you have no other options. Your large printed panorama is beautiful. Do you find glossy or matte better for your prints? At work I have a 44" wide plotter and I just heavyweight coated paper and most of my large format work is to hang on walls or for trade shows or community engagement and I use a satin finish laminate on my 44" thermal laminator. The satin finish is better when you can't control the lighting conditions so there are no reflections spoiling the view, especially when you have a crowd of people and not everyone can get a good viewing angle.
Wow!! Amazing footage. Thank you for sharing and I absolutely Love the Penguins. Your pano shot is stunning also. You never disappoint Nigel on your videos. 😊
I shared this video with my wife. We just loved it. It must take every bit of your experience, knowledge and photographic instincts to take such incredible landscape photographs that are beautifully composed and resist the temptation to just point the camera at all the amazing scenery in a place like this and just hit the shutter button. A true lesson in landscape photography. The old adage says you never get your best shots of a place on your first visit. So heal up that knee and get ready for a great 2024 trip Nigel! PS...really felt bad for Mads.
Great video. When I started in photography I did it for landscape photography, since everyone recommended the use of wide angle, I bought the camera with one. After a few months, in love with moon photography, I bought a 150-600. In the end, I ended up using more for landscape 150-600 than the wide angle...haha. The recommendations are fine, but there is nothing like testing yourself to realize what you like to do and what equipment is best suited.
Beautiful images Nigel. I now feel validated on my use of my 100-400 for landscapes. Ever since I purchased my Sony GM 100-400 a few years ago it has been my primary lens for shooting landscapes. I love this focal range. And your point about foreground objects is so true, it is very difficult to include much foreground when using such a lens. But that is its power, isn't it? You have to love the compression. Can't wait to see your wildlife shots.
Couldn't agree more on having a long zoom in the bag for landscapes. Interesting you said 70% of your shots were taken with the 100-400. That is the exact same percentage of mine on a recent trip to Sichuan Province (and another last week to Huangshan Mountain). However the 100-400 is a very heavy lens (mine is a Sony) if hiking/camping in mountains rather than on a ship ;) Hence I now take the very very sharp Tamron 70-180 (lightest in its class I believe) in place of the 100-400 since I found that 90% of my shots were taken between 100mm and 200mm. Loved the video and your work ! Poor Mads :(
What an amazing adventure and great photos. I didn’t know about the safe guards to protect the area. I am very glad about that. I saw an experiment once that showed if you used a lens hood on a warm lens in cold weather you can create a heat haze right in front of the lens that will soften all images. Once the lens temperature matches the ambient temperature the problem goes away.
Wonderful photography, really beautiful Nigel. 📷 Your ideas and suggestions about using the 100-400mm lens is really very interesting and "eye opening". It does not sound, nor did I hear anything about you using any filters on any of your photography. The changes in the weather surely had a tremendous effect on the colors in many of your photos. That "pano" is magnificent, well done, BRAVO!! 😎 I really appreciate all the terrific details and information. You did a great job.👍 I sincerely hope your knee issues are not a serious issue. In any event, I wish you all the best, whatever your doctors recommend. 😄
Such a beautiful, pristine place, and I love your pano - it’s just how I remember it from about 15 years ago - breathtaking! I hope I can join you and revisit in 2024. 🤞
Love the light in that print of the jagged peaks. The weather changes were so amazing your video really brought me back, and another trip. Try, try again.😛
Great video. Definitely filed under "how stoked can Nigel get". Must have been amazing to have different weather systems rolling through. Just one comment about the end of the video; there's some lovely footage of Penguins doing their thing but then we have two links that pop up plus your logo (right in the middle of the screen). Not complaining, just a shame to not be able to fully appreciate what you wanted to share. Can't wait for next week! Cheers.
Nigel, epic photos beautifully composed and presented as always. I hope the Peak District isn't too boring for you when you are able to get out and about again. On that subject best wishes for a speedy but solid recovery. You will be pleased to know that you are in the category of people I know or know of over the age of forty who ski but now realise they don't bounce so well anymore.
Whoa... Epic on top of Epic. Great video, I can see the excitement pouring out of you. Very inspiring. Great to see you in the Southern Hemisphere - the best Hemisphere 😉
I have watched several of your Landscape videos and I continue to learn about your style. I hope I can join you in 2024 God willing that my good health remains the same.
Beautiful images! I’m planning a trip to Norway and Iceland, a cruise, in June, 2023 and would be most interested in a video about what gear you packed and how you packed for your flights and the trip in general. I anticipate shooting from the ship frequently with my 100-400. I’m a Sony shooter but have their 100-400mm lens I plan to take but I’m not sure if I’ll take a tripod. Thanks for all your videos!
Great film Nigel, many superb photos, loving the pano too. I really like the telephoto images and as much as I like wide angle shots they can make the points of interest appear very small within the frame, telephoto landscapes images allow us to see so much more detail and they do have real impact! cheers.
sorry for the knee pain. I use to be an avid runner until i tore my achilles and then years later tore my minescus. They cut it out. I still have issues but i backpack and try to run. I hope your going to be ok. Knee pain sucks bad.
If you only had a bigger printer Nigel. Still it’s a wicked print, so well done. And for obvious safety reasons you can’t just go wandering around in Antarctica. I am guessing that it’s nothing like you’ve experienced from your Iceland trips in terms of scale. Definitely looking forward to seeing more of your photos from this trip. Thanks for sharing again Nigel. Stay safe 🇦🇺
Hello from MONTANA! INCREDIBLE is an understatement. The colors are brilliant and like none I have ever seen. Penguins what can a person say about them other that they are adorable and such special animals. Thank you for the video and "tips". Speedy recovery for your ACL! Truly, CREIGHTON Photography Linda M Creighton
Hoping your knee gets sorted soon, but try to behave yourself until its strong again - I know its difficult! Beautiful shots - so calming wish Id been there! Thanks for bringing Antarctica to life in the UK
Thanks for sharing ! I bought the Sigma 100-400 f/6.3 for my Canon full-frame when our holiday in 2020 got cancelled due to Covid. Besides landscape photography I also like bird photography and a kingfisher in the local park gave me much joy of that lens. About a year ago, the Fagradalsfjall volcano was about to erupt and that meant that I wanted to go to Iceland ASAP. Due to the pandemic and vaccines not becoming available in my country soon, I had to wait until mid July to get there. By that time I could no longer get close to the eruption itself so I even bought an 1.4x extender. I enjoyed shooting with the lend with and without the extender.
Having watched Adam, James and your vlog, what amazes me is how stable you all got your footage, like the cameras were on granite...outstanding work. The excitement in your voice throughout is brilliant, and hardly surprising considering what you brought back. The book is going to be incredible. And that pano, my house isn't big enough to display it 😂
thanks for letting us in your Antartica adventure! I really wondered how you dealt with the constant movement on the boat and zodiacs and not having the time to look for the best composition (or eat an apple ;-))... thanks for giving us all the details and tips! Your pictures are amazing as always! Antarctica is for sure on my bucket list!
Amazing...enjoyed this so much...thanks for sharing your incredible photos but also thanks for sharing something so beautiful and peaceful in these trying times that we live in at the moment....
Amazing photos Nigel. I’m going to be going to Antartica in 2023 and I would to hear your thoughts about what to bring with you on the trip? (Both for photography and otherwise!)
Nigel that was truly amazing! Stunningly breathtaking images. The scale and the drama of the environment: incredible. Excellent job done with your images. Re Windy, I have it on my phone for checking the tides at Seaton Carew - not quite Antarctica, but lovely in its own way. Absolutely fabulous video. Thank you so much. Hope the knee mends soon, it sounds like a really serious injury. Take care.
Antarctica is an amazing place. I'm so glad I got to go. If it wasn't so expensive, I'd be on the next boat! Your photos are (as always) amazing. Hope the news about your knee isn't dreadful. Which company did you travel with?
Looks like a fantastic trip! I remember experiencing glaciers calving in Glacier Bay NP in Alaska, such an incredible sight and sound to witness. Sorry about knee, that sounds incredibly painful.
Would be real interested in how you used the three lens controls, especially the L-Fn2 button. It was a leap of faith for me to replace my 80-400 with the 100-400 and I’m very glad I did. Eager to get the most out of it. Thanks for this.
A 100-400 mm is not only a good wildlife lens on APSC cameras but also a great landscapes lens for any camera to pick out details of the environment, it is also good for times when you can't get close to your subjects, i use it for landscapes ,seascapes, wildlife and lighthouses in the middle of the Hudson river, where I live in NEW YORK STATE.
What an incredible experience!! Those mountains were epic - I had no idea there were mountains that big so close to the sea 🤯 Good to know that there are significant protections in place that seemingly don't hamper the experience too much.
Hello Nigel, nice kit I just got my Z9 but not lens, I ordered the 100mm-400mm before the camera but it dose look good. Keep safe, stay as well as you can, hope the hospital goes well.
I'm thinking of getting the DJI Mini SE. what do you think of this drone, should I just save more and get the mini 2. Also what are your thoughts on the K and F Concept Aluminium Lightweight 67" tripod. Alos Great Video, I'm from QLD Australia
Can't tell you anything about the drone but the tripod is great! Only thing I don't like is the camera plate that comes with it. Just use an L-bracket and it's all good.
Sorry to hear about your injury … get well soon ! Can you please send link again for your next Antarctic trip ? Thanks! Planning a trip to Iceland how do feel bringing 24-70 and 70-200 vs 100-400 on z 9 with a wide angle on my z25 ??
A really informative video and some great images. I hope your operations go well, I had a discectomy a couple of years ago and it really helped. I concur with your recommendation for a long lens, although you didn't mention it, it needs to be a zoom as from a zodiac you don't have control over distance to subject. I wonder about the current restrictions to Antarctica and if they have changed in recent years. I have been twice, 2009 and 2012 and we spent quite a lot of time on land, much more than zodiac. A lot of my shots were with Nikon 200-400 F4 but my wife loved Canon's 100-400. We saw a lot of difference between our 2 trips as far as the condition of the landscape goes. I also note that Gentoo penguin numbers have increased as the general temperature is rising. We ticked a lot of our boxes with our trips, most southern post office, south of the Antarctic Circle and being on the continent, firstly at Brown Bluff. I feel it was a privilege to visit and it seems as though you share this sentiment.
Great shots Nigel, and that pano is stunning. How did you accommodate the movement of the water when stitching it together? It's something I've never gotten the hang of.

It was great wasn’t it. I just want to go again (as I am sure you do!)
Thanks for another great video. I never miss them. Good luck with the knee. In rehab for my knee now. It looks like a year of PT before I am 100%.
That abstract photo of the iceberg is one of my favourites ever! Really nice photos Nigel!
I really like the telephoto images and as much as I like wide angle shots they can make the points of interest appear very small within the frame, telephoto landscapes images allow us to see so much more detail and they do have real impact! cheers.
Amazing photos, the drama! Someday I hope to go, for now I watch and dream. May it forever stay wild! Thanks for sharing, best for the knee situation
sorry for the knee pain.
Such a nice video Nigel!
Please share in another video more details and photos with this lens, thanks!
Thanks Nigel! Great photos and info. Definitely putting this on the bucket list.
What a great video with amazing pictures from Antarctica. Thanks so much for taking us with you.
Hello from MONTANA!
INCREDIBLE is an understatement. The colors are brilliant and like none I have ever seen. Penguins what can a person say about them other that they are adorable and such special animals. Thank you for the video and "tips".
Your trips and videos are educational in a positive and "real" delivery. That is the reason why I follow you above all the other Photographers.
Thank you and keep up the excellent work .... Speedy recovery for your ACL!
Truly,

Incredible images, especially that pano! Get well soon Nigel, there are lots of compositions yet to be hiked to👊
Wonderful video.. I also enjoyed very much your prints! It's really nice to show some pictures printed... Thank you
Hoping your knee gets sorted soon, but try to behave yourself until its strong again - I know its difficult!
Stunning images Nigel and a great video, loved the abstract iceberg shot ,simply stunning, would love to go on that trip.
Having watched Adam, James and your vlog, what amazes me is how stable you all got your footage, like the cameras were on granite...outstanding work. The excitement in your voice throughout is brilliant, and hardly surprising considering what you brought back. The book is going to be incredible. And that pano, my house isn't big enough to display it 😂
Glad you enjoyed it
thanks for letting us in your Antartica adventure! I really wondered how you dealt with the constant movement on the boat and zodiacs and not having the time to look for the best composition (or eat an apple ;-))... thanks for giving us all the details and tips! Your pictures are amazing as always! Antarctica is for sure on my bucket list!
it was difficult
Amazing...enjoyed this so much...thanks for sharing your incredible photos but also thanks for sharing something so beautiful and peaceful in these trying times that we live in at the moment....
Glad you enjoyed it
Amazing photos Nigel. I’m going to be going to Antartica in 2023 and I would to hear your thoughts about what to bring with you on the trip? (Both for photography and otherwise!)
well done Nigel, some really memorable moments and shots.
Looking forward to more photos / videos on Antarctica - Wonderful photos Nigel.
Fantastic pictures of a spectacular landscape ... Great job! Best of luck for your knee!
Great photos. Some crazy weather you faced in Antarctica, Nigel.
What an incredible experience!! Those mountains were epic - I had no idea there were mountains that big so close to the sea 🤯 Good to know that there are significant protections in place that seemingly don't hamper the experience too much.
They are!
Thank you so much for this amazing video and I’m interested in 2024 workshop.. let me know when you have more details
Thank you for the impressiv video. Very nice. I like the style of your photography. Best regards Kai.
Brilliant images, Nigel! Thanks for sharing this. 👍🦘🇦🇺
Now I am tempted to buy this lens. Awesome video
Sorry to hear about your injury … get well soon ! Can you please send link again for your next Antarctic trip ? Thanks! Planning a trip to Iceland how do feel bringing 24-70 and 70-200 vs 100-400 on z 9 with a wide angle on my z25 ??
Great vid already looking forward to next week, get well soon Nigel!
Your videography is exceptional. Makes me think capturing the best single image is harder! That whale tail shot though... magic.
Great shots Nigel, and that pano is stunning. How did you accommodate the movement of the water when stitching it together? It's something I've never gotten the hang of.
I was just careful when editing it afterwards using PS
Hello from Amnon in NYC.
This video is one of the best you made. Thank you again for your sharing with us. All best to your body. 🙏🏋️♀️
Yep... the unhappy triad (ACL MCL, medial meniscus). Been there...done that. Best wishes!
Loved the video Nigel, thanks for sharing. Is the 100-400 sharp at the 400 end, I have read that it maybe a little soft? Thank you.
Wonderful Photos... Thank you for transmitting your emotions to us! Salud!
Excellent video and wonderful images Nigel! Looking forward to the next instalment! Hope the knee gets well soon. All the best
Many thanks
