Best luxury compact SUV yet? 2023 BMW X1 review

  • The all-new BMW X1 luxury compact SUV could be the new benchmark for premium crossover buyers. But only if you choose the right spec.
    That's because the base model version sold in Australia may be cheaper, but it gets a powertrain that won't suit everyone's tastes. There is a more powerful petrol model, as well, and if you want a version that still runs on dinosaur juice, it's the one to pick.
    But then again, there's a pair of electric X1 models - the iX1, as it's known - which puts the new model on a battle path with the Volvo XC40, which also has petrol or EV versions.
    From the interior packaging and boot space, to the drive experience and warranty cover, this video will give you an idea as to whether the BMW X1 is the right car for you... or not.

    I recommend trying the X1 on a test drive. I did (after trying the Volvo, Audi, Land Rover, Merc alternatives) and it feels a cut above the others both inside and in the driving. I can’t talk about the base model, but the 23i (2 litre petrol mild hybrid) in X-Line spec is absolutely superb.

    Glad to see mention of the safety equipment like rear cross traffic alert and forward collision warning. However, these alerts are mainly in the form of a dulcet low-key “thunk, thunk, thunk” that is, IMO, too close to ignorable. On the Toyota Venza, by contrast, there is a very noticeable audio warning and an addition big alert on the info screen that gets your attention.

    Stop start with DSG works fine, takes a little bit of feel and understanding that you need to release the brake pedal, so the engine can start before the light changes to green. This is not rocket science and easy to live with. So anyone considering the S18...at a very competitive price, I would just buy it without hesitation. Also isn't the 5 year service plan about $1,600 up front? I don't know how that adds up to $430 for an average service? One thing for sure is last time i looked it was significantly cheaper than Volvo and Subaru for example.

    • @StephenFogarty2023
      @StephenFogarty2023 Год назад

      As per the video, the example of stop/start clearly showed a lot of lag.
      How are u meant to necessarily know when a traffic light will go green ?
      If u release your foot off the brake, in anticipation of a green light, the car will then start to move forward, when the traffic light is still red… 🤷🏻‍♂️
      Matt did not mention if the car has a Sport mode.
      Sport mode might lessen the stop/start lag factor.
      Seems as though the 3 cylinder motor doesn’t have a 48V mild hybrid system.
      If it did, the stop/start would be a lot more smoother, and not laggy…

    • @351tgv
      @351tgv Год назад +1

      @@StephenFogarty2023 - you could simply switch off auto start stop and brake hold, also the way that DCT work in general is once the brake is released (and that is via sensor) the engaging clutch reacts (as if would in a manual when you press on clutch) which then get the automated clutch to lock in 1st gear (as you would in a manual car by going into 1st), the only way round that lag reaction would be to put the transmission into neutral every time you have come to a complete stop.
      The other solution is to drive the vehicle in "manual mode" where either via gear shift selector or paddle shifters the driver controls the transmission other then 1st gear.

      * driver can put transmission into sports mode which locks out auto-start stop or driver can go into driver settings menu and switch off auto start stop via that method however it wont retain that selected option so you would have to do it every time so what's the point of that.

We ended up ordering the BMW iX1 (electric) which we got on EV discount which made it much cheaper than the X1 xDrive20i in overall cost over 5 years. The Ateca/Formentor/R had better performance but the iX1 is not far off at around 5 seconds 0-100. Enough acceleration for the city where everyone accelerates like snails anyway.
