  • In this video I guide you through the process of retrofitting a new electric cooling fan into your Jeep Grand Cherokee. This Jeep Grand Cherokee is a limited edition with the 5.9 but if you have the factory electric fan then this walk through should work for you. This Jeep had a blown out radiator and head gasket and after the repairs were completed I noticed that the cooling fan would not operate. I called the local parts stores and got no where so I searched the web for a solution and this is the best solution I found. It uses the PM9069 Cooling Fan Motor that fits some 1998-2000 Ford cars. The fan motor looks almost identical except for the connector and that is why you will need connector pigtail WPT168 as well. This quick and easy fix will save hundreds of dollars.
    Steps
    1. Remove the two mounting nuts on top of the radiator core support
    2. Unplug the cooling fan electrical connector
    3. Lift fan shroud and fan up until you are clear of the radiator
    4. Use a chisel(screwdriver) and a hammer to remove the clip from the fan blade.
    5. Remove the fan blade from the motor. Sometimes you have to tap on the motor shaft with a hammer.
    6. Flip over the fan shroud and remove the three bolts that hold the motor to the shroud.
    7. Unclip the harness from the shroud and remove motor.
    8. Cut off harness from old fan motor
    9. Crimp/solder and heatshrink the old harness to the new harness or motor. Connect the wires in same order as the original fan.
    10. Reinstall fan into shroud and bolt into place
    11. Ziptie wiring harness and connector to the shroud
    12. Install fan blade and clip
    13. Reinstall fan shroud and fan and plug in connector
    14. Replace fuse if necessary(Mine was a 60 amp Maxi fuse)
    15. Test fan by running the Air Conditioning, warming up engine, jumpering the thermal switches in the radiator hoses.
    16. Enjoy your new fan that was way cheaper than the dealership.

    Ha ha.. when you were tapping that clip back into place I reached up toward the screen to keep the fan unit from moving while you were tapping🤪

    Perfect. I’ve seen those same parts recommended and I like the way you did the connector. When you said the heat shrink will have sealant coming out of it - is that a special automotive tubing with sealant or something? I’ve never seen that.

      I have switched almost all of my heat shrink assortments to the adhesive lined type. Most automotive and marine heat shrink come this way but not all. They will normally say with sealant or adhesive lined on the package. Here is a cheap assortment on amazon that states adhesive lined. amzn.to/2TO4SZF

    Great video. What did you use to manually activate the fan to see it turned on? Thanks

      Either a paper clip or tweezers to jump the across the terminals at the temp switch.

    Thanks you for spending time doing a tip video for a such rare case. (Only 1998 5.9s are equipped with this fan)!

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 лет назад

      Threesixty31 No problem. The video probably wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t picked up this Jeep for my father in-law. Had a bad head gasket when I bought it (probably from the multiple overheating episode caused by the fan). I couldn’t believe the price of a factory fan and the lack of aftermarket options. I think the part stores should show the fan motor and pigtail as an option.

    • @Threesixty31
      @Threesixty31 5 лет назад +1

      Yeah Indeed this cooling configuration is exclusive to the 5.9.
      And I belive that the thermostatic switches that control the fan are an even bigger pain to source if not impossible!
      Fortunately some guys have posted videos about this topic to.

    Which ford fan motor part number?

  • @AMF96
    @AMF96 13 дней назад

    My 5.9 the fan will run at low speed but not on high speed so my engine will get a little warm at times and it’s slow to cool with the fan only working at low speed. Do you think I need to replace the fan motor? I have already checked fuses, relays, and the sensors on the lower and upper radiator hoses

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  13 дней назад +1

      @@AMF96 you should be able to check for power on the high speed wire at the fan connector. If you have power when high speed is supposed to be on the motor is likely bad. Or you can unplug the fan and apply power to test it.

    What was the tool you used to get the coat off the wire as easily as you did? Really need one of those myself. Also, what was the clip you were using to test the fan near the end of the video?
    Thanks

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 лет назад

      mooz the wire strippers I used in the video are a red version of these - amzn.to/2WchHhJ
      At the end when I tested the fans I was just using a paper clip to jumper the fan switches.

    Awesome video!! I am looking to install the 98 fan to replace my clutch driven system. Can you tell me if the wiring harness is just powered by the power distribution center (fuse box)?

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 лет назад

      I believe so. I will have to check the diagram again but the pcm didn’t have control of the fans in the early systems. It’s all controlled by the thermal switches mounted in the radiator hoses. The air conditioning is also connected to the system so when the ac is turned on the fan activated and cools the condenser.

      @@ThePracticalMechanic Thanks so much for the feedback, I will look to install mine asap. Let me know if you ever find that diagram, please.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  5 лет назад

      Sorry for the delay but I just looked it up and the fans are powered from the underhood fuseblock and the cooling fans are controlled by thermal switches and the ac high pressure switch. There are no computer controls going to it.

    I have a 97 5.2 ZJ. Do you know if this would work for mine? I'm not sure what to do in my situation. At idle it starts to heat up fairly quickly with the AC on, but once I drive then it slowly goes back down to normal temp. I want to figure out how to fix that issue so I don't have to worry about overheating while sitting at a long red light. Not sure whether to go electric or somehow fix the clutch fan that I currently have. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  4 года назад +1

      I like the mechanical fan clutch better. It's much quieter and more reliable. Make sure the fan clutch is working, fan shroud is intact and the front of the radiator isn't block with debris.

    • @REDGT500
      @REDGT500 4 года назад

      I'm not too worried about noise. The lack of exhaust on my jeep would over power the fan noise I'm sure. I just want to be able to cool the jeep down when at idle. That's my main concern because once it passes 220 degrees the AC blows hot and won't blow cold until I start drive but even then takes a minute to get cold.

      This won’t work for yours. You don’t have the wiring or sensors to control it. Electric fan is unique to the 1998 5.9 limited.

    Thank you for the super clear video showing part numbers etc. Really well done. I have 2 '98' 5.9's and I love them but they have their challenges. You are 100% right the part is obsolete, not available at the dealers, and the cross reference number is not showing up at any of the big auto part suppliers like Napa etc. There was not a good clean solution I could find til your video. Ordered my parts off Amazon just like you said and yep just under $100. Thanks a mil;lion for this super solution to a serious problem.
