Damian Wilson is one of the nicest guys around. He does also very small gigs and is always in the public afterwards chatting and making photos of him and fans. Very down to earth and really a loveable guy!
At the second Ayreon show, we were all standing in line waiting to get in, and Damien came down the line talking to people. Super nice guy. Maggy Luyten is also super cool, and interacts with fans a ton.
Ayreon takes on a journey, don't they? If you haven't already, you might want to react to Mike Mills (Toehider) from the same concert - he's got a wonderful voice and his vocal range spans 4 octaves from low C to soprano C
@@frankreijnen2424 pity that i couldn't attend that gig...i was at this one Universe was phenomenal. Damin was hanging with us before and after concert. Great guy. Very friendly
If you ever have the chance to go to one of his shows, I can guarantee you will get a hug if you ask for one. Especially on the smaller shows he does (solo or with Adam Wakeman). I mean, he will try to say hi to everyone in the crowd personally even at larger gigs, but when he's performing in bars and taverns, he can be very personal.
I know this is an old video, but I saw a guy say "he looks like he gives good hugs" in your twitch chat, and I can absolutely confirm that he does. Damian's love for music and for his fans is really contagious
One of my favorite songs from the show. Stadning right in front of Joost, I could really hear the roar of the hammond at the beginning of the song. On the DVD it's less dominant. Damian is a great singer and such a nice guy. Been at a show in a small venue in Beligium where he jumped off stage at the last song, ran to the entrance of the venue and personally thanked everyone for showing up up and shaking everyone's hand. THX for the reaction. And yes, Arjen wouldn't deny the Pink Floyd influences I guess. And yes, Salisbury Plane is an awesome place. One day I will return there... Once the Covid situation is over.
About that thumb-on-mic method. The way I've heard it explained, it serves two purposes: mic doesn't move around even if you are, providing a very consistent sound, and it also prevents you from hitting yourself in the mouth. Which is especially useful for folks with spatial awareness issues (or for example blind/visually impaired).
Just to clarify: the big Sarcen stones are not the ones from West Wales but its the older blue stones that have now been identified as coming from Wales where they found the quarry they came but also found the location where they had stood before, even accurately matching one of the Stonehenge blue stones to the original hole in Wales. It was a totally fascinating documentary in which all this was revealed last week.
Fun fact, the man playing Drums on this one is Rob Snijders and he is married to Anneke :) turns out she has more in common with Floor than talent they both like Drummers😜😊
Damian is magical and a great singer with a great voice. Hey why not, the druids turned to stone, good as any other explanation for that beautiful place, right? Ayreon never disappoints, it is always awesome music with awesome artists that Arjen has performing. Great reaction and thanks for the Ayreon.
I have been to Stonehenge my friend. I was awestruck at the spiritual atmosphere. When you stand near it overwhelms you with the size of the Megalithic stones and the age of the monument. Great analysis and commentary Charlie. I also hear Floyd in many of Arjen's compositions. Peace. ✌
And you have yet to listen to "Twisted Coil" by Ayreon's latest live (Into the Electric Castle Live), with also Damian Wilson at the vocals. Oh, you have another thing coming there as well hehehe :D It is also a song that not anyone else has reacted to, so you can *get there first* :)
Hey there, first video I've seen of you. I really like your straight-to-the-point and insightful analysis, and the fact that when you do pause, you keep it meaningfully short and sweet. Keep up the good work and I'll be looking forward to more from you.
Love your channel and reactions. I was born and raised just 30 miles from Stonehenge, totally magical place to visit, though last visit was 45 years ago.Live in Canada now. Keep up the good work.
To be fair Arjen is a real fan of deep purple . There is a song called Pink Beatles in a Purple Zeppeling. So you can see where he gets his insperation from. Pinkfloyed , Beatles, Deep purple and led zeppelin.
This is one of my personal Top 5 AYREON songs, such atmosphere, as - again - such perfect choice of voice! [Hmm, has anyone patented "Voice of Choice"? ;p] Anyway, the spontaneous ovation Damian Wilson receives at 7:49 is very much like something I would imagine in an opera after the favorite soloist hits those incredible notes everyone was waiting for! Well you can tell Damian IS a favorite soloist. Although you should check out his performances with the Prog veterans THRESHOLD ("The Hours" came to mind first...). Yes, check out THRESHOLD, maybe even a comparison of all their amazing front-men over the years would be an idea.
The thumb position may be his way of judging exactly where the mic part of the mic is as he seems very particular about where he is placing it. It could also just be a personal stylistic choice 😊
Thanks Moustacchio for this reaction! Damian Wilson is really a fantastic singer. I would like to hear some songs sung by you...... where to find them?
Always glad when i found ayeron reaction but i hope you can react to some of the less famous ones from the same concert like computer eyes and walking Dreams :)
Long ago I was given a crash course in using a mike once and I was taught the thumb thing too, though I don't quite remember the reasons. It was probably in part so you don't accidentally bump your mouth when you bring the mike back up after a break, partly for optimized sound capture (mike should not be closer than that, and though it can be further away let's keep it simple for the noob and stick to the thumb rule) and partly for hygiene, I guess. Not very nice for the next soloist if I ate the mike during mine.
Again good reaction to a killer song! Damian is such a bad ass. Like you said Its a mic technic, there are compressors in the mixer. Probebly plug-in or rack. In the studio you could be jusing very expensive ones, but you dont take these on the road. Luckely Mixers are in qualyty flight. His technic is from earlier and gives him the abelity to play with colour.
Could you react to Devin Townsend "deadhead live at royal albert hall"? It's basically the natural reaction after Kingdom but nobody really suggested it and it's probably his best song :(
Also keyboarder of the former band 'After Forever', where he was in together with Floor. And he still also works with Floor, for example very recently, when playing the piano in Floor's cover of Heart's song 'Alone'.
Oh, you know what it reminds me of? Not Pink Floyd but Paul McCartney, more particularly a song This Never Happened Beforè. That was from the soundtrack of The Lake House. Even a same chord progression in that song and even in the whole in soundtrack off and on. And Arjen likes his classics.

@@yippeethreeeight I have a oicture with him because he just walked down the line wishing us a good show, he is very kind.
One note on Damian - he's not only a rock/metal singer, he's also been a Broadway-style performer as Jean Valjean for a touring production.
Finally Damian getting the attention he deserves from one of these reaction segments - he is brilliant and I just love his voice
Aaaah, finally a vocal coach reacts to that song! Damian is a wonderful singer!

An even more impressive performance of Damion Wilson is the song Twisted Coil, from the live Ayreon concert 2 years later.
Uhhh that song is killing one...
@@palmanbracht9125 Yes, you can see some audience members almost die of agony during the performance.

That was my ultimate favourite song of the evening!
Yes, one of the best singing performances I've ever seen. Damian kills it every time.
I love his vibrato.
It's funny how he looks like he could be in Amon Amarth but has the voice of an angel
Damian looks and sounds so soft I can’t help but want to hug him
Also, +1 for Twisted Coil. I always cry at the end.
Exactly! Handsome, extremely talented, and genuinely nice person! I have a total crush!

Arjen by far is the best at telling stories. And the amount of musicians and singers for those stage shows is staggering.

They've just discovered evidence that the henge originally stood in Wales but was dismantled and dragged to Salisbury Plain to be re-erected.

I am sure Arjen will explain us about the inspiration of this song, when he pop up here.
I know this is ancient trivia, since you watched this over a year ago but the drummer in this song is Anneke Van Giersbergen's husband - Rob Snijders.
The keyboard player Is Joost van den Broek. If I am not mistaken he also played the piano on Floor Jansens cover of Alone.
I think he's using his thumb to accurately gauge distance from his mouth.
Long ago I was given a crash course in using a mike once and I was taught the thumb thing too, though I don't quite remember the reasons. I'm pretty sure you hear Floyd influences because Arjen loves Floyd too
Makes sense. He's incredibly well versed in musical texture and thematics

Stonehenge came from Wales. It was in the news.
Only the old blue stones. The large ones are native to the area.

Your Areyon "valley of the queens" has been blocked, more people had that problem. Try to contact Arjen Lucassen and he will most likely unblock it.
It'll be unblocked soon, I just forgot to dispute it. Thanks for the heads up!
