At the top of a sandstone ridge, at the heart of a historic site of orchards and well houses, sits the building of the School for Nature, Environment and Society. "...this orchard, which was surrounded by a tall fence. Behind the fence were a large orchard and upright palm trees, their fronds like peacock tails. Form the orchard rose the rhythmic sounds of water pumps and, in the canals which ran through the trees, cool swift water flowed... the large red gate was always locked, closing off the green world from us. And so it was, in our eyes, like a chapter taken from one of the fairy tales. And like any fairy tale that alienates itself from the everyday life surrounding it, it too was gathered into itself". The environmental, cultural and natural wealth of the school site seems to preserve the spirit of the past in its separateness from the neighborhood. By dismantling the layers of time and sorting them into values of scenery and heritage, the project seeks to "open the gate" and create a vital and high-quality texture for a school which is not just for students, but for the general public. The texture of the historic village is preserved in the unique geometry in the boundaries of the agricultural plots which formed it. This picturesque division of 'architecture without architects' is an driving factor in a project which utilizes the past as a planning foundation seeking to identify the order, the pace and the methods of movement which left their mark on the ground.
