  • The best credit cards for travelling in 2018. These cards are the best either for their generous signup bonus, rewards for spending on the card, or the ongoing benefits just for having the card. Some have a high annual fee, and some have none. I’ve got some plain cash back cards, and even a debit card at the end. I’ll conclude with the list of the other cards that I carry in my wallet that didn’t make the top 10.
Signup bonus. But maybe after you get the signup bonus the card should just go on the shelf
Rewards for Spend: Cash Back, Airline Miles, Amex Membership Rewards Points, Chase Ultimate Rewards
Ongoing Benefits for just having the card: Free checked bags, lounge access, free hotel nights. The cards can be on the shelf too
1- Chase Sapphire Preferred Card: Best all-around card to get started with (good signup bonus, good earning on spend, Flexible Points)

No foreign transaction fees [This applies to almost all of these cards]
Points transfer to United, Hyatt, Southwest, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Singapore Airlines, Korean Air, Air France KLM, Marriott Rewards, IHG Rewards Club, and Ritz-Carlton
2 - Chase Sapphire Reserve has great earn, a great bonus, and decent benefits.
50,000 UR points after you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months.

    $450 annual fee

60,000 points MR points after $5000 spend within 3 months.
17 direct AMEX Membership Rewards airline transfer partners

Awesome job though I think for those who don't know you should definitely clarify that these cards are only available for US residents and citizens. Non-US folks like me can't get any of these cards and we're so jealous of the amazing offers that you guys get in the USA. Our card offering are all pitiful by comparison. Often bad earnings or no sign up bonus or bad transfer rates.
Just thought I'd give you a friendly heads up 👍 great video nonetheless ☺️

Thanks Matthew! Great point that I did forget to mention! I pinned this comment to the top so people can see it!

Yellow Productions thanks. Even though we do have ones like the AMEX platinum they're mostly all downgraded derivatives of the American version with fewer perks and reduced earnings rates.

      That's a bummer! Like a sign-up bonus of a free t-shirt or a stuffed animal? :)

Yellow Productions haha well the Platinum's got a 30K MR sign up bonus with no minimum spend (but that's only if you've never had an AMEX card before. Can't get it if you've got an another AMEX card) but there's no 5X airfare spending category and the French AMEX cards only transfer to airlines at a measly 5:4 ratio (none of them are 1 to 1). And to be honest here in Europe AMEX is the only real points earning card issuer in town. The European Union has severely limited the size of the merchant fees that CC issuers can charge and thus CCs here aren't as generous since they're offering rewards partially because of the extra revenue they earn through merchant fees and interest rates (which is also not as prevalent as it is in the USA)

Im very happy chris did a video on this, and also to see these comments because im 30 and never been able to afford a CC so all this helps. The fees is what i was most interested in hearing about

Oh, you do *not* get the 100k sign up bonus with the ink preferred by applying in branch, nor is the annual fee waived the first year when doing so. I know first hand as I applied in branch. *However*, the 100k bonus could be available, if you apply with a business relationship manager in branch, so not a normal banker.

    Hi.
You are doing amazing videos. Thank you so much. I got a question for you. So my score is 717_ 727 and I have my first cridet card called slate from chase. Now I am wondering what's the best one or two cridet cards to apply next and get all the advantages such as cash back and travel ?
Please give me the best recommendations

Hi Alaber -- I think the Chase Sapphire cards are another good one... and then perhaps something affiliated with whatever airline or hotel you like to fly or stay at.

I'm so confused...I sighn up for cards for the sighn up bouns..I just get the cash.. however I know now that u get more if u get the Miles...but I'm so lost on the Miles... For example let's see I get a credit card that has an annual fee so I do the sign up bonus to get the miles and after 6 months I want to cancel the card because I don't want to pay the annual fee do those bonus miles go to the airline or stay with the credit card?

I agree with most of your top 5. However, Citi Prestige isn’t that great unless a person makes routine long stays. Usually traveling business sales people or those in the entertainment industry.

+Agent_WestCoast A No argument there! The year I had the Citi Prestige in was staying in some high end hotels a couple times for at least 4 nights. This year I'm not so I cancelled the Prestige.

Revolut! not exactly a credit card, since it's prepaid, but offers the best exchange rate in many currencies

I second Revolut ! Really useful for avoiding foreign transaction fees and has interbank foreign exchange rates. You also have the ability to store your top-up funds in various currencies. So on my recent round the world trip I had my Revolut topped up with British pounds, Euros, Singapore dollars, Thai Baht, Japanese Yen, US dollars, Canadian dollars and Moroccan Dirhams ☺️
So effectively I had a local debit card in every one of the the aforementioned countries

Yellow Productions Chase trifecta: CSR, Ink Cash, and Freedom. In to take over the role of my Freedom Unlimited, I'm gonna get the Spirit Airlines MasterCard, which earns 2 miles per dollar spent on all purchases. I want to go to Peru, round trip on spirit is 25k points, on Chase UR I know you can transfer to United at 40k, valuing each Spirit point at 1.6 UR points per point in that scenario, so essentially 3.2 UR points per dollar spent towards a trip to Peru on all purchases. Backed up by other 5% rewards cards like nusenda Platinum Cash rewards, discover it, and vantage west connect rewards.

i had platinum amex but although the lounge access and so forth is good, the earn rate is garbage, as with most australian cards, so ive recently cancelled it. i wish we had the juicy bonuses and earn rates of usa cards .. sigh ... now i just use a 28 degrees mastercard when i travel, and take a bit of cash and a debit card as a backup. its not worth chasing points in australia. some cards have nice perks but for the most part are all a waste of time. chris i had a couple other queries which i thought you may, or perhaps some of the other folks here, may be able to assist with. when you travel, what do you do regarding your cell phone, do you buy a local sim at the airport or something else? i guess im quite lazy in this regard as i just take my phone wherever, usually get a $2k bill when i get home lol. not good, hence my query, and thought theres probably a more intelligent way to do it. lastly, i have recently bought a few high end watches, and was thinking is this a security issue when travelling. say if i wear one whilst travelling, not advertising it, just low key, wearing a watch like any other joe, wearing crappy clothes to blend in, would i be at risk of being 'relieved' of this? i usually travel with garbage watches, but i want to enjoy my collection when i travel without getting mugged. obviously i'd be avoiding dodgy areas and using common sense, but yeah just thought would it be a problem. any input is welcome. cheers.

+ozzycarnut Hi Ozzy... bummer that the credit cards on Australia aren't that great. I really do miss the Centurion lounges since cancelling my Platinum card.. I'm sure I'll get it again one day :).
Regarding cell phones.. I used to get Sim Cards, but now I have a T-Mobile plan for International data built in. Comes standard in the US now.
Regarding high end watches -- I think wearing anything flashy like that makes you a target, not just for the watch, but to be relieved of perhaps other stuff. So as much as it sucks, I think your thinking is correct.

    • @-Derp-
      @-Derp- 6 лет назад

thanks Chris, yeah our cell phone carriers are not really up with the times just yet. they are slowly catching on to the fact that people travel. usually they just sting you crazy fees when you do anything o/s, data especially, they love to gouge for that. its a shame regarding watches, but i guess thats a fact of life that there are not so nice people in the world more than happy to take that which is not theirs. still, wont stop me from travelling though.
