  • Ernst Franz Hermann Happel (29 November 1925 - 14 November 1992) was an Austrian football player and coach.
He is regarded as one of the most successful managers ever, winning both league and domestic cup titles in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Austria as well as winning the European Cup twice, the first in 1970 and the second in 1983, and a runners-up medal at the 1978 FIFA World Cup. He was the first of the five managers to have won the European Cup with 2 different clubs, Carlo Ancelotti, Ottmar Hitzfeld, José Mourinho and Jupp Heynckes being the other four. He is also one of four managers, along with Mourinho, Giovanni Trapattoni and Tomislav Ivić to have won domestic league championships in four different European countries.

A stunning coach, won the European cup with Feyenoord and Hamburg, lost 2 finals with Club Brugge to Liverpool and took the Netherlands to the 1978 World Cup Final. Won titles and cups in 5 different countries and hardly anyone has heard of him. His teams were functional rather than brilliant and he was reputedly a silent, enigmatic character but he should still be better known.

@@fernandogomes2472 You forgot Hennes Weisweiler and Rinus Michels. They made good football pay and did it without money, using their coaching skills on the training field. Ron Greenwood in his early days with West Ham also did the same - his teams didn't play British football.

I mentioned Michels. Weisweiler was a good one but without the european pedigree of the others

@@fernandogomes2472 Moenchengladbach did win the UEFA Cup under him in 1975 and he brought on Vogts, Wimmer, Netzer, Bonhof and Heynckes into the German national team. That's impressive for me and his teams played much better football than some of the above mentioned - but I'm an old fashioned purist.

True.He had great influence in german football. I just think that the Champions League and World Cup are the most important competitions and these men i mentioned above are the most successful on the big stage

He could read games and he could see inside a player...a great psychologist.
